Wouldn’t you though?
Looky looky at what caught my eye this week: sexy statement urban lighting and furniture, made in a woodland workshop right here in Cornwall. If that’s not a juxtaposition I don’t know what is.
Much of the buzz around Tom Raffield Ltd has been generated by editorials in the broadsheet supplements: if you’ve had time to laze about in bed browsing the Sunday glossies (ha, as if) you’ll know what I mean. His most popular hand made designs are being stocked by high end highstreet stores, and if they’re good enough for Heals and JL they’re good enough for Muddy – DO believe the hype people.
Each thing of beauty is created by steam-bending wood by hand and individually finished with the care and attention of a fine piece of art. You’re looking at future classics here: heirloom worthy luxury, reminiscent of Eames plywood range, but sort of more organic.
Based on natural and organic forms each product works with the aesthetics of countless environments. Not only that, Tom’s designs have won countless awards, he’s scorching hot on sustainability and pretty much unique in his use of British solid woods and traditional steam bending. Hard to imagine that such low-fi methods made this stunning chair – which is one spiral of plywood:
Want something more bespoke? Much of the work Tom undertakes is customised commission work (usually altering existing products according to individual spec) – I’m loving this coat loop, which is made to your dimensions:
But you don’t need to venture up to Cribbs Causeway for your TR fix – Tom has both a website and a showroom (in the woodland I mentioned earlier). Go see him in action, and be marvelled!
