The Urban Guide to the Countryside

From driftwood lamps to stripy fabrics, nautical-inspired homeware is everywhere you look in Cornwall but St Ives-based Katie Simpson gives seaside style a fresh spin. In bright oceanic hues inspired by the Cornish sea, her prints, lamps and cushions literally bring an invigorating splash of colour to any room — especially cheering on mizzly winter days.

Katie creates her designs in watercolours and inks, capturing the flow, movement and blended, aquatic shades of the sea. She says of her fluid style, “I keep the way I work as similar to the nature of water as possible, working on glass as well as fabrics, intentionally not letting the inks and colours dry, but photographing them as they’re moving, flowing and blending, to create little snapshots of the sea.”

Her beautiful designs are hand-painted or printed on quality British textiles, with cushions from £35 and lampshades starting at £28. Or, if you’re lucky, you can get one of Katie’s gorgeous Cornish coastline cushions absolutely free. Gwenver Beach, West Cornwall

Katie’s favourite spots to get inspired by the sea:

Carbis Bay — “There’s a point on the headland between Carbis Bay and Porthkidney, where I love to sit. The contrast between the turquoise sea and the greenery of the cliffs offers such a beautiful colour palette to inspire me.”

Zennor — “The view here is incredibly rugged and wild, and the sea is completely different to what you see in and around St Ives. It’s deeper blue, with more mystery and danger and it feels like you can see for miles.”

Gwenver – “It’s so bright out in the far west of Cornwall, the sea brings its own unique colour. It is more illuminated than I am used to seeing and it always takes my breath away when it comes into view. Bright blue and aqua stripes and great to surf too!”
