Cotehele is my go to National Trust estate, because its right on my door step and there’s something for everyone, from the historic quay and river, miles of doggy walks, the water mill, vast well-kept grounds and the treasures of the house itself.
For those of you who haven’t been to Cotehele before or haven’t visited for a while, there’s a lovely barn restaurant for lunch at the top of the grounds (best for adults or well-behaved kids), a relaxed tea room on the quay and a shop and gallery.
We’re on the holiday home run folks! Nevermind the Olympics – its a personal best for me managing it this far without mainlining a good gin.
So what’s on? Sailing, eating, den-making, rockpooling, loads of theatre too, plus our regular calendar of daily events (full calendar for the weeks ahead HERE) – search by category or by town.
Multiple day events are listed below (since they make my fabulous calendar messy), but I think you’ll want to know about them.
Pysk woodfired session, Philleigh Way Cookery School, Truro Thurs 14 July
Pysk evenings celebrate fresh Cornish fish cooked on the wood grill or in the wood oven over oak sourced from Philleighs own sustainable woodland. Within the ticket price guests can expect seasonal canapes to enjoy around the fire pit, diners will then be seated and served sharing boards of fish cakes with sorrel, hot smoked trout with asparagus and soft hen eggs, soused sardines with fennel, carrot and granita, potted smoked mackerel, red onion jam and salted sourdough toast.
Royal Cornwall Show, Wadebridge, Thurs 9 – Sat 11 June
Judging caps on folks its time for the Royal Cornwall show. An opportunity to learn more about farming, food and the Countryside. Loads of info and exhibits aimed at educating y’all about various aspects of the rural way of life. You can get up close to thousands of farm animals. Great facilities for younger kids (including a families area). I got stuck in the show traffic around Wadebridge today and the show doesn’t even open until tomorrow, so add in extra time.
Polzeath Marine Discovery Day, Polzeath beach Thurs 2 Jun
Cornwall Wildlife Trust, National Trust, the National Lobster Hatchery and the Polzeath Marine Conservation Group are joining forces to bring you a marvelous marine day. Polzeath has a fabulous beach. Celebrate our seas, learn fun and fascinating facts about our amazing marine life; create beach sculptures, take part in an arts/crafts animation, learn to save dolphins with marine life rescue experts and loads more.
Pass me the tramadol! We’ve got the family coming to stay over half term. Thank all that is good and holy then for the Muddy Cornwall half-term survival guide: your one-stop shop for activities, culture, and everything in between. For those who don’t have children (don’t gloat), or whose kids are old enough to amuse themselves, there’s stuff here for you too – at the bottom of the post, but be warned, they are a bit rum soaked!
Half Day Guided Coast Walk, Bedruthan Hotel, Mawgan Porth Thurs 19 May

Sir Peter Blake needs no introduction – a contemporary of David Hockney and an Royal Academian since the 60’s, he’s probably our best known home grown pop artist, using images from ads, collaged items, music hall entertainment and even wrestlers. I know him from his iconic sleeve design for the Beatles St Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band – This was pre-photoshop remember, so Pop artist Blake and his wife Jann Haworth constructed all the life-sized cut-outs of historical figures from cardboard.
Cornish Food Box juicing workshop, Truro Thurs 5 May
I heard about these chaps at the Cornwall Home Show at the weekend – they weren’t there, but there were plenty of supporters blowing their trumpet. Anyway, not only do The Cornish Food Box Co ONLY sell food that has been grown, reared, caught or made here in Cornwall, they are holding a jubbly juicing night on Thursday, in collaboration with Kick Start Fatloss Cornwall.
