Muddy Tries: Lycon Hair Removal
For me, waxing is up there with teeth removal – or eye surgery. Like many of us, I have more than a few horror stories behind me. I’d avoided waxing my er intimate areas (apologies to all who know me) since a moment of madness at a local college beauty salon had me needing skin grafts. Ok not quite, but I did lose several layers of skin to a trainee named Alysha, but not much hair, and my skin took weeks to recover. When Stefan at The Salon at Penleaze causally mentioned their ‘pain free’ waxing system, I literally beaded up with anxiety, backing out the door getting ready to fight, or more likely fly away from this dangerous topic.
So hurrah for Lycon – The Salon’s premium waxing system from Australia that is designed to make your waxing treatments easier (always easier when you’re not trying to escape) and virtually pain free. This isn’t the first time such claims have been made, but I’ve done my homework, it’s used in lots of salons in the city and there loads of celebrity endorsements online.
Anyway, here’s what does appeal to me: there’s no tortuous strip waxing involved: Lycon hot wax is more akin to sugaring I recon, it’s good for sensitive skins (like mine), and older fragile skins (yes alright, like mine), and because of the oil barrier (I’ll get to that in a minute), skin is spared – meaning no redness and soreness.
I decided I’d take one for the team and give it a go – offering up my underarms to the awesome Alice, professional waxing afficionado. There was no way I was going to report on more intimate areas (nooooobody wants to read about that), but Alice filled me in on why its excellent for bikini – Hollywood (more on that below).
Here’s how it works: Alice explained that the low temperature formula shrink-wraps and remove hair as short as 1mm. First she cleaned the area to remove deodourant etc then she applied some lovely smelling aromatherapy oil – this was to protect my skin and minimize damage. Finally the wax was smoothed on with a spatula. The Salon have a no double dip policy so its super hygienic too. Each scoop of wax is applied with a new spatula.
Once the wax had hardened to a sort of stiff chewing gum consistency, Alice gently pulled in the direction of the shaft. Rather like a nurse who entertains children about to have a surgical procedure, Alice distracted me with hilarious tales of training as a beautician and I was soon in stitches – almost forgetting to brace myself for the inevitable pain. Quick to apply pressure after, I can honestly say it was virtually pain free – certainly more like having an eyebrow tidy.
There’s no before photos – I’m guessing you don’t need to see that, but here is an after, 3 days post removal. I look just like a Dove anti-antiperspirant ad don’t I?
Alice tells me about ‘down there’ – if you can pop out a baby then this is a walk in the park. There’s no degrading up on all fours with your bum in the air – and you don’t have to be a contortionist just to get at some of the more awkward bits either. This is totally dignified hair removal. You stay in the one position and before you know it, you’re done! For intimate areas, Alice only recommends Lycon – she’d never use strip wax.
The Salon is a stunning addition to the self catering holiday accommodation also on site – The Lodge and the Farmhouse at Penleaze at the Marhamchurch based site, but is open to all. Stefan has a loyal fan base, with clients coming for miles around for their treatments. The Salon also offer HD brows, treatments by Dermatologica, cosmetic procedures (botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels) courtesy of visiting cosmetic surgeon James McDiarmid MBChB FRCS(Plast) and permanent make-up.
Muddy verdict: while I can’t say I enjoyed it – hey that WOULD be weird right? – I’m definitely cured of my wax phobia. And I’ll be back, in about 4 weeks to have it done again. There’s no better an endorsement than that right?
Good for: those with sensitive skin, wimps (yea that’s me), older skin, faces, keeping intimate areas trim.
Not good for: Those on a budget.
£££: It’s on the pricer side (full leg and Hollywood(!) £57), its definitely reasonable for intimate areas – my underarms were only £15, a regular bikini is the same which is well worth it.
