Ro Hair: A Hidden Gem in Newquay
Purveyor of beautiful beachy tousles, super-star hair stylist Ro was voted Cornwall’s best hairdresser in last year’s Muddy awards. Wanna see how she charmed my tresses?
I’ve always struggled with my hair. Curly, thick and with a tendency to increase in volume throughout the day.
Needless to say, I was naturally unfashionable throughout the nineties and noughties and spent the past three decades torturing it into submission with hair irons. I should have shares in Frizz Ease.
Lately though (and it may be something to do with living in the UK’s most chilled out county) I’ve been embracing my unruly mop. Cue a lot of Curly Girl YouTube tutorials and Instagram trawling.
But the time came when I needed a pro, so who better than Muddy award-winning hairdresser Ro Abell? A master of beautiful beachy tousles, Ro spent 5 years honing her trade at London’s top salons, including Hari’s (Chelsea) and Sassoon (Mayfair). She returned to Cornwall in 2017 to set up her hair studio, slightly off-the-beaten track, at shared creative space The HO House in Hope Yard, Newquay.
A favourite of those who know where to find her, clients are treated to a their own private salon. Ro’s worked here alone up to now but has just welcomed brilliant colourist, Socorra to join her, opening up new appointments but still keeping it small and personal.
Talking of personal, Ro is a truly a nice person. She gives you the smiliest welcome and I loved chatting to her. Ro wrote her dissertation about the way your hair makes you feel and is part hair psychologist part hair stylist, so we discussed my two hair alter egos at length. Curly and carefree Vs straight and polished – deciding in the end that curls were the way forward. She gave me a great cut, chopping in just the right kind of layers to avoid a curly hair triangle or a Golden Girls-style circular bouff. And she also offered up lots of helpful tips on reducing the frizz.
A destination in itself, people travel some way to see Ro, including day visitors from Rock who come for a day out from their family beach holidays – stopping in on Ro, shopping at Roo’s Beach and grabbing hazelnut lattes and dairy-free doughnuts at Jam Jar. A girlie day out that dreams are made of!
Good to know:
Ro also does weddings! Partnering with lots of Cornwall’s top venues, Ro offers beautiful boho wedding hair. See her Instagram feed to get her flavour of her work.
