Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway

Muddy says: Wooo! Wooo! All aboard the beautiful steam trains at Bodmin & Wenford Railway, for a good old-fashioned day out the kids will love

Take an authentic journey back in time at Cornwall’s only full-sized steam railway still regularly operated by steam engines.

A selection of stunning old steam trains run from Bodmin General Station, on selected dates through the year, taking passengers on a 13-mile trip through of beautiful Cornish countryside, with stops at Boscarne Junction or Bodmin Parkway (where you can connect with the mainline).

Boscarne Station is right on the Camel Trail, an 18-mile bike and walking route that follows the old railway line from Wenford to Padstow. When you get off the train here, you can turn right for a pub lunch or left for a cream tea or you can take your bikes and a picnic to cover a little more distance. The brilliant Snail’s Pace Café can be found at the Wenford end of the Camel Trail, about a 40-minute bike ride from Boscarne Station.

As well as regular steam train rides, the railway hosts all sorts of special events, including the popular Santa by Steam at Christmas, Cream Tea Trains, Murder Mysteries, Victorian Weekends and Luxury Dining Trains.

Plus, this Summer, the railway is hosting unique, immersive theatre event ‘The Trench’, from Mon 18 Jun – Sun 15 Jul. The Trench tells the true and personal stories of local Cornishmen who fought in the First World War. Audience members will follow in their footsteps, enlisting at Bodmin Keep and taking on a real soldier’s identity. You then board a steam train and head off to a replica WW1 trench to experience the chaos of battle. Find out more at www.thetrenchbodmin.co.uk.

On a practical note, there is free parking at Bodmin General and the timetable changes day to day, so make sure you check online before you go. Family tickets from £23.50.
