Best restaurant at home experiences for V-Day
Nothing says 'I love you' like a slap-up meal neither of you have had to prepare. Here are 7 of the best in Cornwall for your lockdown love-in.
Forget waiting until Sunday. Cornwall is home to some stonkingly talented chefs delivering amazing food, but the best can usually be found on a Friday or Saturday night. What better excuse to bring forward your celebration – minimal input required for the cooking, maximum joy from the eating, and no need for a designated driver either. Quick, before they sell out.
Grale Frit, Fowey
Ethan Friskney-Bryer, Hazel Friskney-Bryer and Joel Friskney-Adams together are Grale Frit in Fowey – you may recognise Ethan as he’s also the head chef at Fitzroy and North Street Kitchen. Each Saturday they are running a takeaway / collection from Fitzroy, including bread, baked goods and suppers. They’ve a special Valentines Menu for collection on Sat 13 Feb. A four-course meal, with a focus on minimum kitchen time/washing up and maximum time with your valentine – includes ox cheek ragu & fresh pappardelle, followed by chocolate mousse with candied hazelnuts. What’s not to love?
Adam Banks, Newquay
Previously head chef at Fifteen Cornwall, Adam is now a freelance chef, specialising in Italian food. Hand rolling his Pasta + Menu Boxes, he delivers fresh to Cornish doorsteps around the North Coast – expect delicious, delicate pasta and tasty puddings. Delivery in Newquay, Mawgan Porth + Crantock on Friday and Saturdays, with instructions for you to finish cooking at home.
Andy Appleton is another graduate from Jamie’s Fifteen Cornwall and Fowey is the new home for his and partner Lyndsey’s solo restaurant (they used to be at Trevibban Mill near Padstow). For Valentine’s Day they’ve created a 6 course feast prepared and ready for you to finish off cooking at home (easy and will have directions). Drinks can be added as an optional extra and they’ll even recommend a playlist if you desire…
Steins at Home, Padstow
Stein’s at Home sends boxes nationwide, so sadly Rick’s lobster, steak or hake options are already sold out for V-day weekend but a good meal doesn’t have to be one that you cook. This Cornish charcuterie box sounds awesome – just add wine, lay out your picnic and scoff in front of Netflix. Delivers on Thursdays only so you might want to use the bread when it arrives and pick up another loaf for Sunday. Don’t fancy a picnic? They do a mean looking luxe breakfast box too, which also sounds like a pretty nice V-day treat.
Lola’s Cornwall, North Cornwall
No V-day details as yet from Lola’s, who deliver their weekly changing menu featuring the best seasonal produce on Friday and Saturday nights in North Cornwall, but whatever it is, I can guarantee it will be delicious. Chef Tim Spedding (ex-Ledbury, Clove Club and Coombeshead Farm) and his partner Louise don’t just create the most beautiful food, it’s aesthetically pleasing too, right down to the menu and the (recycled) packaging.
Prawn on the Lawn, Padstow
Rick and Katie Toogood opened the first Prawn on the Lawn in Islington, with the second in Padstow – where it sells fresh fish and has 8 seats for small plates and drinks. For Valentine’s Day they are offering the POTL holy trinity – Lobster Thermidor, POTL crushed pots + baby gem salad with truffle oil. £50, oven-ready to finish at home. Available both Sat 13th and Sunday 14th Feb, collection only from Padstow. Pre-order by Thursday 11th Feb.
Source Kitchen, St Ives
New to St Ives in 2020, Source Kitchen opened in The Digey just off the harbour front, serving up fresh local and seasonal food – and while they’d usually be open for breakfast lunch and dinner, for lockdown 3.0, chef Stephen Holloway is offering ‘Source Kitchen at Home’ boxes on Saturday nights – order by Weds, collect on Saturday afternoon. For V-Day they are offering a three course menu, choose one of two mains (the beef wellie sounds good) with starters and puds too, with the option to add on wines – everything you could need & bonus, you can both eat something different.
