Perfect Penzance Breakfast

Quirky/cool café, The Front Room on Market Jew Street has a loyal following and the best eggs in town.

Have you ever sat drinking coffee after a rough week and thought ‘perhaps I’ll give it all up and run a café by the sea’? Well Katie and Tristan of The Front Room in Penzance, are just like you — but with a little more follow through.

The couple took the reins at this super-popular, quirky/cool café less than a year ago but are already very much part of the furniture. A troupe of regulars and loyal staff give the café a friendly, community feel and the eclectic décor is as Instagram-friendly as the coffee.

I joined Katie for a mid-week breakfast and had The Front Room’s specialty, Eggs Benedict (‘Benes’), with spinach and bacon, which is just one of many possible combinations. And they really are amazing – some of the best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had. There are lots of other tempting breakfast options too, from sourdough bread with crushed avocado and poached eggs to American-style pancakes, with bacon, berries and maple syrup.

Lunch looks equally good, with something to please everyone. Healthy super salads, soup and the ‘Lean & Green’ (poached eggs, avocado and spinach) are ideal when you’re feeling saintly or a sarnie, with a side of chips will work when the carb cravings get too much.

And the beautiful coffee deserves a blog post all its own. Cornish roasters, Origin provide the beans and The Front Room’s talented staff bring the creativity. Mine’s just a standard latte, albeit picture perfect, but when time allows barista Lee Williams gets arty with the lattes (it seems everyone’s multitalented in Penzance). Check out the incredible Indian elephant above – you couldn’t possibly drink it! You’ll find more of Lee’s beautiful mug shots on the cafe’s Instagram page: @thefrontroompz.

The building itself is something of a rabbit warren, offering lots of different spaces to suit different diners and moods. As you enter, there are two main dining areas, going through to a garden room, where customers are welcome to bring their dogs and a cosy living room upstairs, with games and space for kids to play. There’s also a pretty courtyard garden, with sheepskin-covered chairs and a beautiful white camellia tree (my best guess), decadently flanked by bunting and a few disco balls.

Good for:

I honestly can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t love the tasty food and friendly atmosphere here. Great if you’re alone, with a friend or with kids and the dog.

Not for:

I’m going to say minimalists but only because I have to say something.

£: Very reasonably priced food and coffee (£7 for the Eggs Benedict). The only trouble is, you may want to try everything, like one guy who’d ordered two brekkies while I was there and that could get expensive.

The Front Room, 83 Market Jew Street, Penzance, Cornwall, TR18 2LG.

The Front Room is brilliant! As you say, welcoming, comfortable, great food, keeping it real while offering really tasty and well-priced meals. I worry writing this that it’ll end up leaving PZ for somewhere ritzier, please don’t! We love you!!

I LOVE this cafe! I often visit on a Friday morning, tucking myself away upstairs to enjoy the best hot chocolate in town whilst I indulge in an hour to myself to read my book.

We loved this place, the food, the cosy atmosphere, the hosts who made us exceptionally welcome. Unfortunately it may be a while between visits as we live in Brisbane Australia, we will definitely be back and give it our highest recommendation.

All the best with your very promising venture. Cameron and Georgia from the land down under.

Ah! Cameron and Georgia – you will be most welcome in Cornwall on your return. Though you’re probably enjoying slightly nicer weather than us at the mo! Thanks for leaving a comment x

Do you do gluten free bread?

    • sophiebaker January 23, 2017

Hi Mary, I just asked Tristan at The Front Room, who told me yes, they do have gluten free bread, which can be swapped in for eggs benedict or anything else on the menu. x
