Review: Dip & Dine at Una St Ives
A serene eco resort on the edge of St Ives, with a beautiful spa and relaxed contemporary restaurant. And you don’t need to stay there to enjoy it.
In need of an afternoon’s peace? Er, ALWAYS. My new favourite secret place for a soak, steam and a lush lunch is this stunning eco resort and spa, just outside St Ives.
I first spotted Una when I was walking St Michael’s Way, a beautiful hike from Lelant, on Cornwall’s north coast to Marazion on the South. We got lost shortly after we passed by and looking back, we probably should have cut our losses and opted for a spa day instead but I made a mental note to return.
In the end, I came back with my husband and kids for a Sunday ‘Dip and Dine’, when you can use the spa facilities, if you book lunch at Una Kitchen. It’s a great way to stretch out Sunday lunch and make more of an occasion of it. Add a beach walk at Porth Kidney Sands and Carbis Bay and you’ve got a day of loveliness right there.
We started with a swim, taking turns to overheat in the steam room and sauna, while the other parent watched the kids in the large infinity pool. The pool and spa area at Una is immaculately kept, spacious and full of light, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. Loungers and bean bags all round the pool invite you to snooze or flick through the Sunday papers while you cool off.
On the day we went, ours were the only kids there but they were made so welcome by the staff. They loved the pool and smaller (warmer) baby pool, the lawn, playground and cricket set outside the restaurant and the specially prepared mini pizzas and massive ice cream/waffle extravaganza they had for lunch.
The roast at Una Kitchen comes highly recommended but we couldn’t resist the crab & prawn macaroni cheese, served with woodfired garlic bread and a falafel burger that I’ve been daydreaming about ever since. I eat meat but order veggie food more often and this was the most delicious meat-free burger I’ve ever had, with an amazing spiced umami dressing and homemade turmeric poppy seed bun.
As much as Una’s a gorgeous spot to while away a couple of weekend hours, it’s also a great option for coffee and cake if you’re walking in the area or maybe an anniversary weekend away in one of the stylish eco lodges.
