Grab your coat, you’ve pulled (probably)

The wait is over fans of food! The dullness that is Cornwall winter closing (ie ‘you’ve reached *insert top chef name here* I can’t get to the phone right now, I’m on my own private island in the Maldives’ etc) is over. Tying in seamlessly thank-you very much with Valentine’s Day: a day guaranteed to crush your mojo if you’re not in a relationship, and pressure you into making the exceptional happen if you are.

Want an excuse to both offload the mudlets and eat some class grub? I’m game. Grab a friend/ your dog/ your significant other (just not your kids) and looky looky at these fabulous eateries…

The Idle Rocks (St Mawes)

It’s dîner pour deux in this romantic dining experience with a glass of sparkling wine and canapés on arrival at The Idle Rocks. Head Chef Guy Owen is offering a five course secret tasting menu and matching wine flight.  The exact menu is a secret *raises eyebrows* – however you can expect the best seasonal ingredients including crab, lamb and chocolate. Plus, they *ehem* have rooms so err, ooh la la, no need to book a taxi.

Amelie’s (Porthleven)

amelies wedding

A favourite with my girlfriends – Amelie’s boast great food with a stunning location so if you get tired of gazing into your beloved’s eyes on Valentines night, you can enjoy the views of Porthleven harbour instead! Try l’amour at Amelie’s plank sharing menu from for an intimate food experience. If you’re feeling so inclined, you can even go one better and tie the knot (just not with your dog tho ya?) – they do weddings too!

The Falmouth Bay Seafood café (Truro)

falmouth-bayLike oysters three ways? Well here ya go – they’re on the menu at multi-award winning The Falmouth Bay Seafood Café this valentines weekend, along with all sorts of mouthwatering delights to please any palate. Don’t be fooled by the laid back vibe though (the kitchen is open and you can see the chef Dan at work) – this is a first class fish restaurant – and don’t blame me if you don’t want to leave!

The Springer Spaniel (Launceston)

anton p springer
Amuse your bouche at The Springer Spaniel at Treburley, Launceston with a scrumptious set eight (!) course taster menu with delights such as smoked bacon and Guinness mussels.

The Springer Spaniel is set in the pretty hamlet of Treburley. If you looking for an unhurried affair with an expertly put together menu, this is the place for you. The award-winning pub has had mixed reviews recently, but chef patron is Masterchef 2012 winner Anton Piotrowski who is keen to develop the restaurant– you can’t get better credentials than that.

The Old Coastguard (Mousehole)

The old coast guard

The Old Coast Guard is actually a hotel (romantic sea view room, anyone?) and are offering what they call EATDRINKSLEEP+ ‘sleepovers’ with a difference until 24 March.

The Old Coast Guard keeps things simple, Valentine’s day offering is quality Cornish beef and poultry, game from local estates and cheeses from some of Britain’s best dairies.

Ben Tunnicliffe at the Tolcarne Inn (Newlyn)

Ben’s menu is predominantly seafood – no set menu for Valentine’s day – because the menu changes daily and depends on what has been landed at Newlyn Fish market. Ben is well known in the area (he won a Michelin star at the Abbey Restaurant and then ran the kitchens at the Scarlet Hotel) and people come because its good. Very good. Relaxed and informal, with a roaring log fire. A good choice if you don’t want V-day smoochiness in your face.
