Muddy Lunch: Little Bakehouse, Launceston
Popped in to Launceston for a new gum guard, as you do (no not for me!) and happened upon this cute little family-owned indie café/bakery you’ll want to stop by…
Intimate is an understatement – but true to its name, Little Bakehouse @ Launceston is the tiniest bakery ever (possibly), serving hot soup, the best coffee in Launceston (probably) and absolutely delish home baked sour dough bread (definitely).
Despite it size, the space feels light and airy, quite arty (it was previously an art gallery), but also very relaxed and tourist/drop-in/family friendly. You can sit at either the sharing table, or the table for two. There’s often a queue outside the door – or inside on a day like today (brrrrr).
I had a ‘picky lunch’ – home made tomato and basil focaccia, with olives, home made humous and their home made basil balsamic vinegar. Did I mention everything is home made?
This is their delightful grade II listed kitchen I invited myself to nose around.
Despite gorging myself, I didn’t feel stuffed or bloated – Phil says this is down to the sour dough which is much kinder to the delicate Muddy constitution (bread without the bloat? I’m converted!). The focaccia was divine – soft, moist with a crispy crust, perfect for dipping.
If you want just bread (or toast) with your coffee, you can help yourself to great dollops of butter and their fabulous home made jams. Boiled egg and sour dough for breakfast? Ok then. Their other regular lovelies include fresh brioche, croissants and pain au chocolat.
Did I mention cake? Cake is (home) made by Suze and expert cake baker Jane.
Phil and Suze are originally from Dorset, but moved here to be closer to family. They must be doing something right – from a single ‘OMG I’ve booked a table at a farmers market’ moment to a veritable bread empire within 14 short months. This little shop now supplies a good many of the top restaurants in Launceston, as well as farm shops, garden centres and new launch Olive & Co in Liskeard. Since opening in January 2015 this bakery-cum-coffee shop has won three World Bread Awards – 2 X Bronze & 1 X Silver award and were finalists in the 2015 Cornwall Life Best Independent Food Retailer awards.
They are très knowledgeable about both sour dough and coffee and run regular sell out workshops/ taster sessions.
Muddy verdict – You’ll wish you worked in Launceston!
