Muddy Eats: Taco Boys, Polzeath
One of my North Cornwall favourites - cult food truck Taco Boys. Go for the food, stay for the (beach) view.
Loved by the locals and visitors alike, find Taco Boys serving up delish tacos and tasty treats from their converted horse box literally on the beach at Baby Bay, New Polzeath.
Breakfast and lunch at the beach never tasted so good until the Taco Boys set up. In dry weather (closed Mondays) you’ll find them down on the sand at Baby Bay, New Polzeath.
At low tide, you can walk round the headland from the main beach at Polzeath or if you prefer a shorter walk you can head to New Polzeath and walk down the coast path to the beach which is a more friendly 5 min trot from the car park.
On a sunny lunch time Taco Boys is so popular you’ll often find the end of the queue before you reach the beach, so you know you’re in the right place!
This is street food meets beach food, so bring your own seating and be prepared to eat with your hands – no knives and forks here.
Like all good beach eateries, if it’s wet or there’s a super high tide, they revert to Plan Bee, the drive-thru delivery hatch behind the Bee Centre just up the road.
Run by Felix and his team, Taco Boys has a super casual vibe but don’t let that fool you. Felix is a serious chef and the food he delivers is well thought through, expertly cooked and beautiful to eat. The beach view just adds to the experience.
Some say that the prices are high but for decent hot food freshly made at the beach, I think it’s pretty decent value for money. If you’ve a whole tribe to feed though at £15 for 3 tacos, there’s no escaping that you’ll notice the dent in your wallet. Occasionally they run 2 for 1 deals which sell like hot
Dog lovers should note the beach has a dog ban from 10am-6pm, so if you want to combine your taco fix with a pootle with your pooch, do it early.
SCOFF AND QUAFF
Tacos, obvs. On the menu for breakfast is the bacon and egg taco (or the veggie equivalent) featuring local Lundy eggs with extremely yellow yolks. My lot just can’t get enough of them and we go at least once a week for breakfast!
At 12pm the menu changes and the queue builds for the lunch time offering – a choice of 4 tacos (usually a fish, meat, cheese and a vegan option) as well as the fab KFC (Kernow Fried Chicken with a dipping sauce) or a pot of vegan chilli.
Follow that with a sweet treat (both the brownies and cookies are ah-may-zing) or a cup of their own brewed ice-tea or kombucha. They also serve teas and coffees but if you’re into drinking either in a serious way, you’re probably best bringing your own.
The boys have been known to serve up dinner too, but that’s off the menu at the mo – at the beach anyway, as they are concentrating on breakfast and lunch. Never say never though, so keep an eye on their socials where they announce all the goings on.
During lockdown you could still get your dinner fix from the boys – just not at the beach, with a delivery service or by grabbing a burrito and a beer from the drive-thru hatch up at the Bee Centre. Now that everything is open again for business, that’s on hold for the time being.
THE MUDDY VERDICT
Good for: Taco lovers of all varieties. Post-surf sustenance, breakfasts with the fam or a beachside lunch before (or after) you walk round the Rumps.
Not for: Those that like to pre-book a table, or eat inside, or eat with cutlery – this is a queue up and eat with your hands while watching the waves place.
££: £15 for three tacos and reasonably priced sweet treats.
