Afternoon Tea with Bells On

Let's kick off the season of indulgence properly, with a fabulously festive afternoon tea at The Headland Hotel. Shall I be Mum?

In an era of coffee chains on every corner, a luxuriously long afternoon tea is a total delight and The Headland Hotel serves one of the best in Cornwall.

Guests at this elegant and historic Newquay hotel, can take afternoon tea snuggled by a log fire, in the chic lounge bar or at the family-friendly Terrace restaurant (the relaxed sister restaurant of Muddy award-winning Samphire).

The Terrace is a contemporary, light-filled space, surrounded by windows that look out to sea. And it’s some sea view! The perfect spot to watch the winter waves rolling in at this time of year.

Afternoon tea at The Headland is an indulgent and traditional affair, with three tiers of finger sandwiches, fluffy scones and a collection of fanciful sweet treats, served with loose leaf tea and optional Champagne.

At Christmas there is a festive twist. A turkey and cranberry sauce sandwich joins the ever-so-English cucumber and egg and the mini cakes and puds, include bite-sized mince pies, little stollen squares and Christmas cake.

Thankfully the all-important middle layer has not been messed with. Two decent sized scones (one plain, one fruit) per person, with plenty of jam and clotted cream.

Whatever order you pile them on, this is always the highlight of afternoon tea for me, alongside a traditionally brewed pot of loose leaf tea. And the complimentary glass of mulled wine was a lovely way to string out the afternoon even further.

At £18.50 per person, it’s actually a really affordable way to gather friends for a Xmas celebration and is ideal for all ages – from our two-year old (who tried to steal all the best bits) to the smartly dressed elderly ladies on the next table.

A handy note for parents: if you are going with younger children, I wouldn’t bother ordering any extras for them, as there was masses of food. The only challenge is stopping them scoffing all the the pretty little cakes, while you’re still working on the cucumber sandwiches.

Festive Afternoon Tea is available from 1 Dec – 2 Jan.
