Make merry this festive season with Muddy's guide to the best English wines. Plus, get your mitts on an exclusive case from The English Wine Collection for free!

Need a steer on what to crack open this Christmas? Or just fancy swapping your usual festive tipple for something closer to home? Over to Guy Heywood, owner of The English Wine Collection, the UK’s largest curated collection of English wines for some of his favourite recommendations, ideal for the holiday season.

Plus, read on for the chance to get your chops around a specially curated Muddy Stilettos English Wine Case, worth £119 for FREE.

What: London Cru Baker Street Bacchus 2019, £20

Why: A smooth and creamy German grape (the tradition of decking the boughs originates in Germany, so it would be rude not to) from London’s first winery and a personal favourite of Guy’s.

Also good for: pairing with platters of soft and semi-ripe cheese, crackers and smoked salmon.

What: Lyme Bay Chardonnay, £17

Why: No worry about writer’s block with this easy-drinking white – light, refreshing and fruity. You’ll tick off your Crimbo card list in super-quick time.

Also good for: bringing out the flavour of nibbles, including olives and smoked cheeses; vegetarians and vegans.

What: Three Choirs Rosé 2019, £10.50

Why: It’s traditional to serve fish on Christmas Eve and this rose makes the perfect partner, as well as being incredible value for the quality. Save space in the fridge and chill for just 15 minutes before serving – any colder and you won’t get those delicate summer berry flavours.

Also good for: pairing with honey roast gammon; vegetarians and vegans.

What: Wellhayes Vineyard Sparkling White 2016, £22.50

Why: Keep it south-west with this deliciously crisp and punchy sparkler from Wellhayes Vineyard perched on the edge of Exmoor – a fine match for turkey or nut roast.

Also good for: cutting through rich, fatty meats like goose and pate.

What: Renegade Courtney Red, £24

Why: Breathe a sigh of relief and sink on the sofa with this soft and silky red (think Pinot Noir with hints of cardamon and cherry). It comes with a quirky anecdote on the side as Renegade decorate their bottles with pics of their customers. This is Courtney, a south London freelance chef who had a particularly tough 2020 after a roller blading accident. (Don’t worry, he made it in for the photoshoot so he’s fine now).

Also good for: warming up after a Boxing Day dip; hoovering up with the leftovers; vegans.

What: Bolney Eighteen Acre Sparkling Rose 2011, £25

Why: Can’t face another Prosecco? Ring in the New Year and get in the pink with a sparkling rose, redolent of summer nights and those foreign holidays you’ll hopefully be booking. Remove from the chiller 15 minutes before cork-popping at midnight for the full strawberries and cream flavour.

Also good for: pairing with the Christmas pudding, a slice of Panettone or a mince pie (or three).

Fancy tasting the lot? Head over to Muddy Reader Treats for your chance to WIN all six bottles in an Exclusive Muddy Stilettos English Wine Case, containing all these delicious wines, worth £119.

A french friend, a sommelier, was recently in contact to offer thanks for a gift of English wine and most complimentary on the quality!

The information regarding the English wine was interesting as I was looking to purchase some recently and prefer to use local.
