Rum Bar, Surfside, Polzeath
This secret beachside rum bar pays homage to Cornwall's pirate past, serving up awesome tiki inspired cocktails alongside live music.
Rum Bar is every north Cornish dweller’s favourite secret tiki-bar, although it is now more of an open secret as last summer you could literally follow the queue across the beach – you’ll find it hidden at the back of the beach in an old quarry behind the also awesome Surfside restaurant from the same team.
Cocktails are accompanied by a hedonistic beach party vibe, with live music, epic sunsets, barefoot revellers fresh from the surf outside the front door, and occasional visits from celebrities – often those with houses nearby – including actors galore, fashionistas and um, the (now ex) prime minister (he’s well known for his Polzeath hols, so I guess it’s inevitable). Don’t let that put you off though, such is the vibe at Rum Bar that either you’ll be too busy to notice anyone else, or firm friends by the end of the night.
Co-owner Tristan Stephenson is a bit of a rum expert (he’s even written a book about it) so the quality of the drinks is second-to-none. Rum Bar was set up to celebrate that “most diverse, rambunctious and irreverent of spirits – rum” and in all the times we’ve been, we’ve never had a drink anything less than excellent, with a constantly expanding rum collection, plus draught and bottled beers, wine and soft drinks.
In non-Covid times there is a pretty non-stop party atmosphere, in these more sedate times when they open up in May it is table service only, bringing more of a chilled, laid-back vibe under strings of lights using make-shift and reclaimed furniture.
