Muddy shines a light in Fowey

We love a bit of vintage here at Muddy Cornwall HQ – and the quirkier the better (Mr MC currently his eye on an old prison door from Dartmouth jail – but that’s another story). But it’s not easy to find cool lights in the countryside, so you can image my delight at stumbling across Any Old Lights in Fowey.

Living an a crumbly old cottage, we’ve just had a much needed rewire and now the boring safe bit has been done, I’m itching to overhaul the lighting throughout the house, so hellooo Any Old Lights! Born as a pop-up in the Webb St premises of Lazy Jack’s Kitchen (while Jack was in winter hibernation), it became such a hit that when premises in South Street became available, Pat Fitzpatrick and business partner Nick Griffiths snapped them up quick and Any Old Lights had a permanent home.

The shop hosts eclectic mix of old and new: reclaimed lighting fixtures, architectural oddities, fixtures and fittings and marine architectural salvage from decommissioned ships – they have scoured the universe (nearly) for their quirky finds.  Everything from ceiling, stand and passageway – if it lights up, they stock it  – perfect for a quick update to the Muddy Cornwall interiors.

Pieces are sourced from all over the world – many found in breakers yards in India, salvage yards and collectors, you’ll find bits from from Russian subs, ships anchors, antique divers helmets, and even a telegraph. Foghorn anyone? How many do you want? Guaranteed to get oldest muddyteen out of bed.

They have an interesting range of ship’s clocks – the triangle Seiko reminds me of childhood cruise ship holidays – ah nostalgia!

I’m a total marine geek – if it came from a ship and its old, I want it! I’m refitting my bathroom soon, so have made a note of these rather smashing porthole mirrors:

And if you’re looking for something really unique, its not just found items they guys can help with. Bespoke? Nick and his team can make just about anything in metal, wood or glass – chairs, tables, signage, lighting what ever you like and customise existing lighting you might have. If you’ve had a sherry in Pintxo or a steak in Fat Cap and Brisket in Fowey you can get a feel of their recent projects – Nick and Pat have been involved in a number of local commercial refits.

Prices range from a darned reasonable £60, to a buttock clenching £1600 for an original can’t live without Korean diver’s helmet so there will be something within your budget. They ship world wide too, so if you did want that ships telegraph and you’re down here on hols, you won’t need to sacrifice suitcase space.

If you can’t make it to the shop – poor you -you’re really missing out. There’s nothing like seeing the lights on – but console yourself with a browse of their rather natty online shop. Take a gander and don’t forget to illuminate me (ha) on your purchases.
