Where to eat, stay & spa in March
Looking to eat, drink or get pummelled this month in Cornwall? Here is my round up of the best events and deals in the duchy!
Anyone working on their bikini bod for spring – look away now. Personally, I plan to eat my way around the county this month and if you’re with me, here are some events and offers to whet your appetite. Plus a few cheeky spa deals to keep us all nice and calm.
FEASTS, SUPPERS & TASTINGS
Fish out your stretchy pants, you’re going to need them. From low-key supper nights to gourmet wine tasting dinners and Mother’s Day celebrations – there’s food-centred events galore in the duchy this month. Let’s eat!
Lee Skeet & Wild Supper Club, The Kitchen Table, St Ives, Thurs 1 Mar – £42
Start the month being wined and dined at the Kitchen Table, with a collaboration from chef Lee Skeet and local expert on wild Cornish ingredients, Josh Quick of Wild St Ives. Guest will be treated to a six-course menu full of locally sourced meats and seafood, and a selection of vegetables foraged by Josh.
Knightor Feast Nights, Knightor Winery, Trethurgy, Fri 2 (£20pp), Fri 16 (£25pp) and Fri 30 Mar (£30pp)
Knightor Winery brings you three fabulous cuisines from Dirty French on Fri 2 Mar, to Korean BBQ on 16 Mar and finally a Portuguese Feast on 30 Mar. Expect home-cooked style in a friendly environment, Knightor feasts are ones not to miss.
Reggae Roasts, Mount Pleasant Eco Park, Porthtowan, Sun 4 and Sun 18 Mar – adults £10/ kids £10
Choose from delicious main course choices including veggie and vegan options, served with seasonal veg, roasties, Yorkshire pud and Rich Veg or Jerk Gravy. After you’ve filled your bellies enjoy a drink or two in the covered atrium, take a stroll with the family around acres of natural beauty, overlooking the coast.
Off-Piste at The Beach Hut, Watergate Bay, Fri 9 Mar – £30pp
A beach bonfire, live music, banquette seating and a three-course menu straight from the French Alps. Wrap up warm, light the fondue and tuck in to sharing platters of breads, cheese, pickles and cured meats. Expect pulled pork poutine, tartiflette, salads, polenta gruyere and a sweet fondue for dessert with fruit, chocolate and marshmallows.
Heligan Feast Night, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pentewan, St Austell, 9 Mar – £25
Feast nights are back in the recently refurbished restaurant at The Lost Gardens of Heligan. March’s feast menu will be designed around Heligan’s vast array of heritage root vegetables – from bulls blood beetroot to chestnut mushrooms. £25pp.
Mothers Day Brunch, Canteen, St Agnes, Sun 11 Mar – £15
Canteen in St Agnes have started a new Sunday brunch tradition at their laidback HQ. This one’s especially for Mother’s Day and is likely to book up fast!
Mother’s Day at Woods Cafe, Cardinham Woods, Bodmin, Sun 11 Mar
Woods Cafe and Cardinham Woods make a great day out any old Sunday but on Mother’s Day the cafe team will have an even-more-impressive-than-usual spread of cakes on offer, plus live music, free crafts for the kids and extra, wet weather seating.
Uncorked: Mad March Madeira with Bovey Wines, Fifteen Cornwall, Fri 16 Mar – £45pp
Bovey Wines was formed in 1984 with the specific purpose of importing the Madeira Wines of Pereira D’Oliveira. This tasting is a once in a lifetime opportunity to taste Madeira’s dating back to the 1900’s. Fifteen will also be serving small plates of antipasti from the kitchen to accompany the wines.
Punk Thai at Harry’s Cali-Style, Hayle, Fri 16 Mar – £28pp
Punk Thai teaming with Californian-style restaurant, Harry’s Cali-Style in Hayle for a special evening (with two sittings). The classic Thai spread sounds amazing – from fragrant soups to curries, Pad Thais to sticky, coconutty puds. Takeaway will also be available.
Wine Tasting Dinner, Old Quay House Hotel, Fowey, Fri 16 Sun – £65
Fowey’s Old Quay House Hotel welcomes wine expert Charles Steevenson to host March’s wine tasting dinner. Begin with welcome drinks in the lounge, followed by a 4-course supper created by head chef Richard Massey, paired with a range of wines. £65pp, with special room rates if you fancy stopping the night.
Roo’s Beach Fashion Feast, Bedruthan Hotel, Newquay, Fri 16 Mar – £35
Bedruthan Hotel hosts its third Fashion Feast in partnership with Porth boutique, Roo’s Beach. Enjoy a three-course Malaysian sharing feast, cocktails, live music and a presentation of the Roo’s Beach Spring Summer 2018 collection. There will also be special guests from the worlds of fashion and beauty.
Beer & Mussel Festival, The Cornish Arms, St Merryn, Fri 16 – Sun 18 Mar
The Cornish Arms’ Beer & Mussel Festival, in St Merryn returns with 40 different beers and ciders and an even bigger line-up of live entertainment, including music and food demos. Plus they’ll be screening the finale of the Six Nations rugby, so you don’t have to miss the big game.
Game Over, Canteen, St Agnes, Fri 16 Mar – £40
Marc Dennis of Duchy Game joins the Canteen team to celebrate the end of game season. Dine on a four-course menu and enjoy themed talks and tastings. An evening to support this special Cornish business – all proceeds will go towards a new charcuterie HQ.
Greek Fire & Feast Night, Bedruthan Hotel & Spa, Mawgan Porth, Fri 23 Mar – £35
Gather round sociable long tables for a themed feast overlooking the Cornish coast. This month and next it’s all about Greek cuisine, with a menu including lamb souvlaki, beef stifado and sardines wrapped in bacon with fennel. After dinner, guests wrap up and head out to the fire pit for hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.
Wasted Wine Supper, The Gurnard’s Head, Fri Mar 23 – £60
A wine supper with an environmental theme. Rich Hamblin of More Wine will be hosting, whose mission it is to source and supply low intervention, high quality wine with a focus on sustainability and eco-friendly packaging and. There’ll be a seasonal, nothing-gone-to-waste menu from the kitchen and Rich’s excellent wines poured from pouches, bags, boxes and even a can.
Wild Wine Club, Kudhva nr Tintagel, Sat 24 Mar – £65
Explore the influence of architectural design on wine making at Kudhva (Cornish for hideout). Tasting five wines, selected by Sommelier Debbie Warner accompanied by a five-course feast. Wander the beach in great company and then enjoy a feast by an open fire.
Spring Feast, Camel Studio, Washaway, Sat 24 Mar
The first foodie fiesta of the year in the beautiful barn at Camel Studio. A spring-themed menu, created by chef Liam Smith-Laing (who has trained alongside top chefs including Marcus Wareing and Gordon Ramsay) will be served at long tables, decked with spring blooms. Four course feast -£30pp.
I love a set menu and this time of year there are lots of special offers in Cornwall’s restaurants for us locals too. Your chance to enjoy some of the best food the county has to offer, before the crowds swoop in like a flock of half-starved seagulls.
Winter Plates & Wine, Locals Lunch Offer, Fifteen Cornwall, Watergate Bay, until Mar 23 – £19
Head Chef Adam Banks has done away with antipasti, starters and mains in favour of a delicious list of dishes including vegetables, cheese, meat, fish and sweets to enjoy however you like. Choose three small dishes or one small and one large, plus a glass of recommended wine (or a soft drink) for £19 (available Monday to Saturday).
Charity Lunches, Rick Stein Porthleven and Falmouth, Mon 5 – Fri 23 Mar – £17.50 (£2.50 to charity)
This month the renowned Rick Stein eateries at Porthleven and Falmouth will be supporting some treasured local charities. At Porthleven, enjoy a special 3-course menu, of Rick’s classic dishes, for £15, plus a £2.50 cover charge that goes to The Fishermen’s Mission and at Rick Stein’s Fish in Falmouth, the set menu will set you back £14, plus a cover charge of £2.50 in support of Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Dirty Mondays, Star & Garter, Falmouth, every Monday – £24 for 2, cocktails 2 for £10
Not new but so worth a Monday night out this month. Grab some friends and head to this cosy Falmouth pub for smoked brisket and chips to share, sandwiches by cocktails, tasty snacks (pickles, spicy guac and Kimchi) and brownies. (Brisket & chips £24 for two)
Sunday Brunch at Appleton’s, nr Padstow
Appleton’s launches their Sunday brunches in Jan and they look epic. Grab one of ten tables from 11am until 3pm and take your time (tables don’t turn). From £11 for classic fry up to £18 for steak and eggs or £21 for Squid ink linguine, Padstow crab, zucchini and ‘Nduja pangrattato.
Sunday Set Lunch, Coombeshead Farm, Lewannick – £28
The evening set menu is fairly pricey but to try out the food at this buzzed-about rural dining spot for less, book for Sunday lunch. A food writer’s fave!
Set Lunch, Paul Ainsworth at no.6, 2 courses – £25/ 3 courses £29
Once again, dinner is more of a major investment at this Michelin Star Padstow restaurant but the set lunch gives guests a taste of Paul’s incredible food without the need for a special occasion.
HOTEL & FOODIE BREAKS
If you have a special celebration this month or just need a break (don’t we all!) why not combine dinner with a night or two away. Here are some of the offers and packages that caught my eye this month.
