All the exciting new openings and goings-on. Your favourite blabbermouth reporting for duty – yes ma’am. Here’s the latest superflashy newsflash for Cornwall.

Yallah Cafe, St Ives

Yallah opened their new cafe space above their kiosk hatch (above) in St Ives in August and we can’t wait to visit – serving up more than just coffee and mmm, donuts, they’ve extended their range to simple seasonal tasty food, plus banging house sodas, and obvs, coffee. 9-3, daily.

Geo-thermal warmth, Jubilee Pool, Penzance

The first geothermal lido in the UK opens to the public on 1 September at the Jubilee Pool in Penzance, with the natural salt water heated to a balmy 35C. (Note, not the first geothermal bath in the UK – as that was done by the Romans 2000 years ago in Bath!) How’s it done? Well, warm water is extracted from a geothermal well (410m deep – the height of one and a half Eiffel Towers) and the heat distributed to the pool via a heat exchanger, before the cooler water is re-injected back into the ground. Fancy! And long awaited – this has been a ten year project and cost a cool (warm?) £1.8m. We’re off for a swim next week and will report back.

C Bay Salon, Carbis Bay

C Bay Salon is now home to a team of five, bringing a wealth of experience from many years in the hairdressing industry. Offering cutting, styling, perming, colouring, hair extensions, wedding and occasion hair and a barber’s chair, the Salon, with champagne bar, is open to visitors to the Estate and also has a thriving following from non-residents. C Bay Salon is now open for bookings – prices start at £26 for a cut and £23 for a blow-dry.

No.54 Pop Up, Vicarage Rd, St Agnes

Looking for vintage and contemporary objects for your home? Better hot-foot it over to St Agnes where this gorg yellow pop-up shop has set up home for the remainder of September. Open from 11am – 4pm, Wed – Sat.

The Bottle Shop, Newquay

New eatery, deli and wine bar in Newquay serving up local wines alongside small plates, cheese and charcuterie – on our list for September.

The Packet Inn, Prussia Cove

The team behind acclaimed seafood pub, The Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn, chef and restauranteur Ben Tunnicliffe, alongside his Head Chef Matt Smith, have taken over The Packet Inn – an old coaching inn near Prussia Cove. The Packet sits between coast and countryside and so here Ben and Matt will look to both for inspiration. Look out for our review soon.

Ben explains: “As ever we’ll be guided by seasonal cycles and our love for the finest local produce, but we’ll be working with local butchers and smallholders as well as growers and fishermen. So, as well as superb seafood, guests can expect grass-fed beef, free range poultry and outdoor-reared pork as well as colourful and creative vegetarian and vegan food.”

Potters, Bude

Up in Bude, Potters has opened – we hear they are open all day – a fresh, modern daytime cafe and then as an evening restaurant, serving fresh local Cornish produce.

The Punchbowl and Ladle, Feock

Now back open under new management, this gorgeous old Cornish pub near to Trelissik is open again. Previously the sister pub to The Ferryboat in Helford Passage, The Punchbowl is now operating as it’s own entity, under the watchful care of part of the previous team. Expect great food, stylish interiors, live music on Fridays and a warm welcome – dogs allowed in the bar and at outside tables. We’re heading down soon and will report back.

The Harbourside Refuge, Porthleven

Where one door closes (Rick Stein closed his restaurant here earlier in the year) another opens – with Michael Cains second Cornish restaurant opening in six months. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, bookings are open now.

Krowji is set for a mid autumn opening for Phase 2, which adds a further 21 studios for artists, makers and creative businesses to the creative hub in Redruth.

Rick Stein

Rick Stein is set to be out and about filming his new 15 part series on Cornwall for BBC 2 – more details when we know when it hits our screens.

Ramsays join Cornwall Air Ambulance

We hear that Gordon and Tana Ramsay have joined Cornwall Air Ambulance as new ambassadors, aiming to bring the excellent work to new audiences.

Falmouth Falcons set new world record

Falmouth’s ‘Young Generation’ – an award winning theatre company for young people in Cornwall – took part in setting a new world record for the most people to simultaneously board a broom, in honour of Falmouth’s status as a Quidditch town, which is named in Quidditch Through The Ages as the Falmouth Falcons.

Doc Martin

Martin Clunes’ stint as the grumpy doctor of Port Isaac, sorry, Port Wenn, will come to a conclusion after filming the 10th series, ITV have confirmed.


Netflix have released the trailer for the much anticipated Ben Wheatley update of the film version of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca – starring Cornwall’s own Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers (KST was born in Redruth), with Armie Hammer and Lily James in the lead roles. After a whirlwind romance in the French Riveria, newlyweds Mr and Mrs de Winter return to Cornwall, and to Manderley, which is where things go rather dark.

Sadly a lot of the filming was done in Devon, but if you can’t wait for the release on Netflix on 21 October, check out our walk from Fowey to Polridmouth – which includes the beaches that inspired du Maurier and catch sight of the shipwreck which may have had something to do with inspiring Rebecca’s demise.
