What’s On This Weekend: Fri 23 – Sun 25 June
FRI 23 - SUN 25 JUNE
The Third Policeman, venues across Cornwall, Thurs 15 – Fri 30 June
This big summer show from renowned Cornish company, Miracle Theatre will be popping up all over the Duchy in the second half of the month. The production, written by Flann O’Brien, ventures into a world somewhere between Alice and Wonderland and the Marx Brothers, where the earth is not round but sausage shaped and night is actually and accumulation of black air; where eccentric policemen fall in love with bicycles and you can visit eternity via a rickety life, hidden in the heart of rural Ireland. Sounds delightfully bonkers to me and even better to catch it at a unique and unexpected Cornish venue, like Mount Pleasant Eco Park (this Tuesday), Bedruthan Hotel’s cliff top theatre, The Woods Café at Cardinham Woods or The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Golowan Festival, Penzance, Fri 16 – Sun 25 June
For ten days the streets Penzance come alive with music, processions and street entertainment marking this traditional celebration of midsummer. The traditional festival was lost to Cornwall for many years but revived by Penzance Town Council, Alverton School, Kneehigh Theatre and Penwith Peninsula College in 1991. Traditional festivities include the Feast of St John, The Mock Mayor Election, The Quay Fair and Serpent Dances and many local businesses have cultural happenings to enjoy.
The Addams Family, Hall for Cornwall, Truro, Tues 20 – Sat 24 June
Everyone’s favourite kooky family are on stage in the UK premiere of this spectacular musical comedy, from the writers of hit musical Jersey Boys. Samantha Womack (Eastenders Ronnie Mitchell), Les Dennis (Michael Rodwell, in ITV’s Coronation Street) and Carrie Hope Fletcher (Les Misérables and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) will star as Morticia, Fester and Wednesday Addams, who is all grown up and has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows. She’s fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family. With his cherished Morticia in the dark, will Gomez manage to keep his daughter’s secret until the two families meet for a fateful dinner with hilarious consequences? Muddy Northhants loved it, check out her review to get the lowdown.
Tom Jones, Bands in the Sands, Perranporth Beach, Fri 23 June
In addition to popular festival Tunes in the Dunes later this month, The Wateringhole on Perranporth Beach will be host to a series of major concerts this summer, kicking off with the man himself – Mr Tom Jones. I’m amazed tickets are still available for this gig. I mean who wouldn’t want to watch the lovable Welshman belting it out on the white sands of Perran beach with a cold beer in hand? Other acts appearing later in the summer include Seasick Steve, The Stanglers, Feeder and Toots and the Maytals
