What’s On This Week: Mon 6 – Sun 12 Aug

MON 6 - SUN 12 AUG

Newquay’s coolest festival Boardmasters is on this weekend and Falmouth’s Greenbank Hotel will hosting the town’s very first gin festival. There’s masses of fun stuff on this week. Where shall we go first?

For loads more ideas see my Big Summer What’s On Guide and Our Favourite Family Outings in Cornwall.

Gigs at The Wateringhole, Perranporth, throughout summer

You can catch some great live music throughout August at The Waternghole, right on the beach in Perranporth. Some of the season’s biggest gigs have past but this week you can see Australian bands Drop Legs (Mon 6) and Caravana Sun (Tues 7) and local girl Daisy Clarke (Thur 9).

Miracle Theatre touring with Chekov’s Cherry Orchard, Penlee Park Theatre, 7 Aug, Tregrehan Gardens, 8-9 Aug, Trebah Garden, 10-11 Aug

Miracle Theatre The Cherry Orchard, Summer 2018, Outdoor theatre Cornwall

This summer Cornwall’s award-winning Miracle Theatre will set Chekhov’s classic comedy ablaze, skilfully treading the tightrope between tears and laughter with the story of a family facing ruin, as society teeters on the brink of cataclysmic change. Miracle’s outdoor productions have become a ‘must do’ activity and pop up in unexpected and extraordinary, places including gardens beaches, castles and clifftops. See my review

Velvet & Stone Sundowner Session, Lusty Glaze, Wed 8 Aug

Velvet & Stone are an indie-folk band from Devon; they combine soulful, blues vocals with guitar, violin and roots song-writing. Velvet & Stone provide an original take on a traditional genre blending personal tales, local stories, and landscapes to create a serene, acoustic and original sound.

The History Boys, Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross, Wed 8 – Thur 9 Aug

“History is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men.” Alan Bennett’s The History Boys follows a class of gifted sixth-formers, in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at Oxbridge, generally in that order.  It premiered on Broadway in April 2006 taking the Tony Award as Best Play of the Season.

Kneehigh Asylum, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, 2 Aug – 22 Sept
The Asylum is back in a new site at The Lost Gardens of Heligan with three shows set to delight you! This year it’s all about breaking the rules in Kneehigh style, for a season of world-class theatre and epic live music. Would you cheer as daft dictators are overthrown and you hear a vast karaoke choir (you!) sing together in perfect protest? Then don’t miss UBU Karaoke! Have you ever wanted to witness lovesick amphibians hop to the beat? Look no further than our adaptation of Quentin Blake’s The Dancing Frog. Maybe you fancy going quackers for the return of Cornwall’s favourite, oversized duck and the most functional, dysfunctional family in all of the wild southwest? Then Fup is for you – Kneehigh’s glorious adaption of the Jim Dodge novel.
The Greatest Showman, Dairyland Drive In, Wed 8 Aug
Paddington 2, Porthmeor Cinema on the Beach, St Ives, Wed 8 Aug
The Greatest Showman, Caerhays Drive In, Thur 9 Aug

Boardmasters, Newquay, Wed 8 – Sun 12 Aug

Live music and pro surfing on the stunning Cornish coast. Boardmasters Festival is hosted across two beautiful locations. The festival site sits on the cliff top at Watergate Bay, home to arguably the world’s best festival view. Expect twelve stages, with a collection of acts ranging from local acoustic talent, to mind-bending visual performers, to international headliners. This year, catch Chemical Brothers, Craig David and Fat Freddy’s Drop to name a few. Oh and over at Fistral there’ll be pro surf comps, skating, BMX, live music, the Surf Village and much more.

James Turrell Sky Space at Dusk, Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, Gulval, Weds 8 Aug

There are two opportunities this August to see Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens outside of normal opening hours and to experience the James Turrell Skyspace at dusk. Background illumination under lights the ceiling of the Skyspace and provides a subtle contrast with the sky. The shifting balance between the interior and exterior light will provide a contemplative and hypnotic transition. Led by Neil Armstrong, Tremenheere Director.

Plus The Red Arrows, a pink wig parade and fireworks? I’m there!
