Plenty to keep you entertained this week, including three special Cornish festivals – Newquay Fish Fest, Redruth International Mining & Pasty Festival and the kick off of the annual St Ives September Festival. Who’s ready for some fun!
Kneehigh Presents FUP, The Asylum, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pentewan, until Sat 22 Sept
FUP is a big-hearted, uproarious modern fable about family, love and nature set in a weird and wild Cornwall not so different from this one. Featuring live, foot-stomping music, quacking puppetry and Kneehigh’s infamous eccentricity and charm.
Taste of Scilly, Isles of Scilly, Sat 1 – Sun 30 Sept
A month-long celebration of the very best in local food, drink and produce from across the five inhabited islands. This year’s event will, in particular, showcase the tiny islands’ outstanding seafood, alongside other island-grown produce.
Scilly, Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just, from Sat 1 Sept
Kurt Jackson’s upcoming exhibition explores the aquamarine coastline, flower-filled fields and tottering dry-stone walls of the Scilly Isles, showcasing the quiet wildness of these little islands at the end of the world.
The History Boys, Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross, Mon 3, Tues 4, Fri 7 and Fri 14 Sept
Alan Bennett’s The History Boys follows a class of gifted sixth-formers, in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at Oxbridge, generally in that order. It premiered on Broadway in April 2006 taking the Tony Award as Best Play of the Season.
Willy Mason & Emma Gatrill, Thurs 6 Sept
One of the world’s greatest singer/songwriters who last toured the South West with Ben Howard is playing an intimate gig at Truro’s Old Bakery Studios.
Electric Swing Circus, The Wateringhole, Perranporth, Fri 7 Sept
With their own unique style of swing, The Electric Swing Circus always brings the party! A full time, touring band on the international circuit, the ESC’s live set includes electric double bass, vintage samples, gypsy-jazz guitar, keys, drums, synths and electro beats.
Newquay Fish Fest, Fri 7 – Sun 9 Sept
Every year Newquay Harbour hosts a fantastic fish festival, with stalls, cooking demonstrations and music, celebrating Cornwall’s huge fishing heritage and culture. BBC One’s Britain’s Best Cook will be looking for new applicants at this year’s fish festival and there’ll be proms on the harbour with the Mount Charles Band.
Redruth Mining & Pasty Festival, Redruth, Fri 7 – Sun 9 Sept
This three day family event pays homage to the Cornish pasty and to Cornwall’s mining heritage, including a memorial to miners who lost their lives in the county. The festival is held within the Cornish Mining World Heritage site, which encompasses Redruth and its outlying venues and museums.
St Ives September Festival, St Ives, Sat 8 – Sat 22 Sept
With the summer rush of holidaymakers over, St Ives draws down art and music lovers from all over the country for a whole host of exhibitions and events, from outdoor poetry and song in Norway Square to Celtic music in the Guildhall and earthy Blues in the Western Hotel.
