Holiday bliss over the bridge
Perched on its own private island above Newquay's Towan Beach, this luxurious family rental is one of a kind. And the views take some beating.
Eat your heart out Richard Branson, I’ve found an island home to call my own and I don’t even need to hop on the private jet! The Island in Newquay is an iconic sight in this north Cornwall beach town – a spectacular holiday home, set among lush greenery on its own tiny island, on dog-friendly Towan Beach.
Dramatically, it is accessed via suspension bridge and is entirely surrounded by water at high tide and white sand when the tide’s out. The beach in the heart of Newquay is popular with families, so can be busy in summer and the harbour is a short walk away.
From the garden, which wraps around the house, you can take in sweeping views of the Atlantic and watch surfers and seals from the rocking chairs under the swaying palms. Various sheltered areas have been created in the garden, including a lovely al fresco dining spot with a pergola, fairy lights and a barbecue.
The house sleeps six comfortably, with a beautiful master bedroom on the first floor, complete with a contemporary four-poster, en suite, dressing area and snug and two doubles at either end of the ground floor. One of these can be made up as a twin if you’re staying with kids. Each has its own bathroom with hotel-fluffy towels and luxury toiletries.
There’s a large and well-equipped kitchen and a choice of dining tables inside and out, while the elegant, New England-style living area has two cosy wood burners and plenty of soft seating. For party nights, there’s bar room with a large TV and billiards table.
There’s loads of choice nearby for evenings out too – we love the cocktails at Tom Thumb, seafood menu at Fish House on Fistral Beach and Mexican fare at Gilmores. For breakfast, Box & Barber is a firm favourite and coffee and cake at Jam Jar Café is a must too. We’re more beach crawl than bar crawl types and there are so many to choose from here, from the northern beaches, such as Bedruthan Steps and Watergate Bay all the way to Crantock, Porth Joke and Holywell Bay on the south side of town.
THE MUDDY VERDICT
Good for: Special family escapes or romantic breaks (there’s a special ‘just for two’ rate). It would make an ideal UK honeymoon spot or special place for a small celebration.
Not for: Those with a fear of heights.
The damage: From £1,707 for a long weekend or mid-week break
