Shepherd’s Delight: Luxe Couples Glamping
Decadently decked out, this shepherd's hut near Bude is the perfect rural Cornish retreat and a star gazer's paradise
As a Muddy Editor and nature lover, I’ve checked out and checked in to a lot of rural glamping retreats in Cornwall but Hutterly Beautiful is a place that took my breath away. ‘Hut couture’ – yes! But it’s not just the luxury little pad but the serene setting too that makes this place so special.
To get to Hutterly Beautiful, in the countryside near Bude, you have to negotiate a few of the narrow, high hedged roads typical of the area. So it’s even more surprising when you go through the gate and an uninterrupted view, that must stretch for miles towards Bodmin Moor and the Atlantic Ocean, opens up in front of you. It’s mesmerising.
The hut itself sits alongside the owners’ 16th century farm house and holiday cottage but it’s contained in its own area, with a lawn (covered with wild flowers in spring), a barbecue, outdoor table and chairs, lounging chairs with sheepskins to make them even cosier and a Swedish woodfired hot tub that you can soak in until you’re more prune than person, should you wish to.
Being in such a quiet rural spot the night skies are especially clear and a midnight dip in the hot tub to admire the constellations is highly recommended. There’s even a little astronomers guide in the hut, if you’re as clueless as I am.
Owners Fiona and Rob have exceptional taste and have finished the hut’s interior to boutique hotel standards, with lots of stylish yet practical touches. The irresistibly comfortable bed is made up with soft French linen. with robes and slipper socks for late night stumbles to the hot tub. Chilled Prosecco and a cream tea greets guests on arrival and all the ingredients for a luxurious hot chocolate are provided.
A locally sourced breakfast box can also be arranged. Stylish copper fixtures, delicious bath products from St Kitts Herbery and a woodfired stove complete the cosy luxury. Seriosuly, I could get on board with this small space living!
Hutterly Beautiful is designed to be a destination in itself rather than a base from which to explore Cornwall but should you wish to get a little closer to the sea or grab a beer in a local pub, Bude is just three miles away and nearby Widemouth Bay is perfect for bracing beach walks.
The Muddy Verdict
Good for: A rural retreat for couples far from the madding crowd. If you like peace, quiet and the simple pleasures of life in the slow lane, you will love it here.
Not for: Anyone who prefers the bustle of a town or community feel of a glamping/ camping site.
The damage: £125 – £135 a night, including Prosecco and cream tea and unlimited wood for the wood burner and the hot tub, fire lighters, matches, BBQ coals and candles for the lanterns!
