Muddy Escapes to Moroc
Did someone say cold snap? I’m off to warm up with a Moroccan spa experience at The Sands Resort, Newquay
I’ve driven past popular family resort The Sands in Porth, Newquay loads of times but never been in to explore. Just a short drive from the airport and with loads of child-friendly facilities, it’s no surprise summer can be chocka here. But mid-week in November draws a calmer crowd.
As locals, we are spoiled for Cornish spas and out of season is the best time to try them out. Hotel spas are quieter at this time of year and offer the perfect winter reboot. Needing no further encouragement to strip off, don a fluffy bathrobe and lounge around, I headed to The Sands Resort to try their new Moroccan-inspired spa experience.
‘Moroc’ is a new addition to The Sands’ Ocean Breeze Spa. The basic 90-minute package I tried includes an hour spent hopping between the bubbly cedar hot tub and barrel sauna. Then after a quick cool off in the shower, there is half an hour to chill out in the Moorish style lounge over mint tea and/or a glass of bubbly, served with homemade macaroons, mini cakes and dried fruits to nibble on. Lovely flavoured waters are also on tap throughout your visit.
It was a lovely little interlude in an otherwise miserable winter day and it would be a great way to catch up with a friend, as a relaxing alternative to meeting for lunch. You can also book out the whole space as a gang of ten, which would be perfect for a birthday or hen party, with some treatments thrown in.
The Moroc experience can be booked on its own or as part of a bigger package, with treatments and lunch. I have to say, I wasn’t really ready to leave my spa haven when the 90 minutes was up. As a day spa visitor next time, I would definitely book one of the Moroccan rituals or a treatment in the Ocean Breeze Spa to go along with the Moroc experience and make more of a day of it.
The Moroccan-inspired treatments on offer include an Argan Butter Foot and Leg Ritual, Liquid Gold Hand and Arm Ritual and an Argan Oil Face and Head Ritual that works on pressure points to relieve stress. There is also an extensive menu of treatments on offer in the Ocean Breeze Spa from nails and waxing to luxurious body treatments , using organic products from Cornish brand Spiezia. If you are going with friends, the vintage tea party looks particularly fun.
The Muddy Verdict
Good for: Anyone needing a relaxing time out. Go with your mum, sister or friends for a good catch up in a chilled palace of pampering.
Not for: This is not really a wet spa experience but there is a steam room and pool in the Ocean Breeze Spa, so you could combine treatments and packages to get the best of both.
££: One of the more affordable sps in the area. The 90-minute Moroc experience is £25, facials start from £40 and a 55-minute, full body massage is £56. A Moroccan Spa Day with the 90 minute experience, one of the ritual treatments and a two-course lunch is £69.
Cornish residents can also sign up (free of charge) for the spa’s Advantage Club to receive up to 15% off treatments at Ocean Breeze Spa (this excludes the Moroc experience and rituals).
