What’s on guide Thurs 3 – Wed 9 Mar
Its a proper bonkers jam packed week with Bowie, Burlesque, Boden and Books to bamboozle you:
World Book Day, Thurs 3 Mar
Perfect curling up with a book weather this week if the bods at the Met get it right. Treat your self to a lovely new paperback and support your local indie bookshops by spending your vouchers at participating stores – its a win-win. See my curated list of the coolest here.
An Inspector calls, Hall for Cornwall, Truro Thurs 3 – Sat 5 Mar
In Truro this week? We have an Oscar nominated Director in the house! Stephen Daldry brings J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls to Hall for Cornwall. When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman.
And while you’re at it, pop in for a pre theatre nosh up at Truro’s newest and coooolest space for wine, food and art The Art of Wine. It has only been open a week and looks utterly fabulous (we gatecrashed day 2 – see my review).
2:30pm, 7:30pm from £11 Hall for Cornwall, Back Quay, Truro TR1 2LL
The Art of Wine, 7 Nalder’s Court, Truro, TR1 2XH
St Joseph’s School open day, Launceston Fri 5 Mar
I was lucky enough to visit St Joe’s last week and was so impressed I wrote a review for the blog. St Joseph’s is a fantastic – a town school with a country feel. GCSE results were the best in Cornwall with a stonking 96% passing 5A*- C. Doubly impressive since they’re non-selective with no entrance exam. Don’t take my word for it – just take yourself and your little darling(s) along to the open day this Friday. No need to book. Let me know what you think.
10am St Joseph’s School, St Stephen’s Hill, Launceston, PL15 8HN Tel: 01566 772580
Labyrinth, White River Cinema, St Austell Sat 5 and Sun 6 Mar
Ah Labyrinth – if you were there in the 80’s you’ll remember this beautiful film with a wonderful cast of creatures and humans (my first ever crush was on a goblin king – its amazing I turned out so normal). A selfish 16 year old (she’s 45 now bloody hell!) is begrudgingly babysitting her little brother. But the baby wont be settled and Sarah, while telling him a story to make him sleep, inadvertently conjures from a fantasy world the Goblin King (I hate it when that happens. Except when its the amazing David Bowie) who steals the child and brings him to his castle in the middle of a labyrinth. Sarah has to rescue him before midnight, or the baby will became a goblin. As someone with a little brother, I remember thinking at the time, let him have him – you can always visit. Seemed like a win-win.
All tickets at child seat prices – just a fiver. Yes, I know you can catch in on Amazon video etc, but I’m taking my muddies along this Sunday so I can pretend I’m 10 again watching it with my dad.
13:30 £5 White River Cinema, River Walk, Saint Austell PL25 5AZ
Cornish Wild Food Pop-up , Dynamite Valley Brewery, Ponsanooth Sat 5 MarCelebrate St Piran’s day on Saturyday with Cornish Wild Food and Dynamite Valley! My moles in the know tell me that brew-pub Dynamite Valley was launched via a super successful crowd-funder campaign – pledges were received from far flung places like Australia and Canada. They must be good!
Ever had pulled venison? Nope me neither, but its on the menu, along with wild board sausages and wild rice bean burgers. Foraged ingredients in all the offerings and Cornish beer to wash it all down.
From high noon(!) Dynamite Valley Brewing Co, Viaduct Works, Ponsanooth, TR3 7JW, UK
Mothering Sunday, Sun 6 Mar
Stuck for ideas for how to thank your mum for putting up with you? Your bacon is saved – check out my suggestions here.
Madam Moxie’s Masquerade, Mangos Bar and Club, Falmouth Sun 6 Mar
Maybe not one to take your mum to, Madame Moxie’s Masquerade will be bringing a line-up of burlesque, musicians, singers, dancers, drag artists, and comedy to Mango’s Bar and Club in Falmouth on Sunday. There will be Mead, meat and music. I have fond memories of the lovely Miss Trott who travelled about a million miles to teach a group of us hens a knock out burlesque routine to wow the bride on her big day. She was definitely wowed. Dress up and leave your inhibitions at the door, but don’t forget your pasties….

The Big Run, in aid of The National Lobster Hatchery, Padstow Sun 6 Mar
If saucy dancing’s not your thing, you can burn some cals AND raise money for a great cause at the same time. If your fit, fast or furious or all three you can take part in the Big Run, in aid of the National Lobster Hatchery on sunday. These beautiful scenic runs will take you down the famous and beautiful ‘Camel Trail’ all the way from Wenford Bridge to Padstow, where you will end up in Padstow harbour. Depending on your commitment level, there are three different starting points.
See The Big Run for details.

One for the little ones, drop in for a lively half hour of stories and songs in one of the galleries at National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
