The Muddy Manipura Massage Experience

Tresco – what’s not to love? Glorious sunshine, miles of white sand, gorgeous new England style cottages –  its every inch the glam holiday retreat for beautiful people. But on the hottest day of summer, I was certainly not looking beautiful. Mr MC had dragged me on an ‘offroad’ bike ride in blistering heat -sweating like a tomato in a greenhouse and to say I was ‘bedraggled’ is being kind. So while he went fishing, I booked myself into the gorgeous super exclusive Flying Boat Club spa in New Grimsby. If you’re staying in one of the Flying Boat Club holiday cottages (trying not to be too envious here) then entry to the spa is included, but since I was just visiting, I had to be buzzed in which felt like being let into the private suite at Liberty.
The Flying Boat Club spa use ilã products for most of their treatments: ethically sourced from around the world and free of synthetic nasties, all the ingredients come from plants or minerals. Loved (and endorsed) by right on celebs like Gwynthew Paltrow, the only other spas in Cornwall using  ilã are Muddy favourite sister hotels The Scarlet and The Bedruthan in Mawgan Porth, so it was a real treat to find them here.

I was greeted at reception and taken to change into something more comfortable (the fluffiest robe – I looked like a marshmallow) before I made my way to the communal relaxation area. The spa is bijou, but not compact – standard spa type facilities with a pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and fully equipped gym and treatment rooms, oh there’s also a very impressive boutique, no doubt for women like me forget their entire gym kit. For the yogis among you there are classes each week – you don’t even need to bring your mat.

Loads of treatments aimed at fatigue, energy depletion and emotional re-balancing (can you hear me scream WELCOME TO MY WORLD?) – these guys really know their audience. I really like the idea of the ‘exhaustion’ wrap for relief from adrenal exhaustion, hormone imbalances, menopause and anxiety – that’s pretty much a textbook description of moi!

Before I get to my treatment, here’s pics of the communal areas so you get a feel for the spa. The shared lounge was decorated in sherbet lavender shades, in keeping with this private island’s ‘branding’, stylish and grounded by some beautiful local art (there’s even art around the pool!) Plenty of slouchy recliners, cool drinks and beautiful products for you to lust over.

img_4266Then it was down to the business of pampering. … a wonderfully stimulating signature ilã Manipura Full Body Massage. This warming treatment began with a shockingly satisfying body scrub, quick shower, followed by the soothing massage to help balance and energise the Manipura – the solar plexus (naval) chakra – which if you didn’t know (I didn’t) is the centre of fire and sun energy that ignites our health and vitality (ooh err!). The Manipura massage uses marma massage, lymphatic drainage and herb poultices to relieve digestive blockages, increase blood and lymph flow, and stimulate inner vibrancy.

ila-spaAll thoughts of my wobbles (they seem to be breeding) and whether I had shaved my legs that morning went out the window as Alice gently got to work. Just the right amount of pressure, and with the wonderfully warm kidney packs, I gently snored through the massage – don’t judge – I like to think of it as a kind of subliminal thank you, and Alice didn’t seem phased.

I’m a total convert to ilã products (take note, Mr MC), I wish this blog post was scratch and sniff, because I can’t describe how absolutely heavenly the oils smell. Uberluxe on your skin and they conform to the highest standards of natural and ethical integrity – but – the price certainly reflects that (ouchy!). Despite the hefty price tag, these have become my new heavy weight pamper pals.

I think what really set this spa apart was two things – the products, which are outstanding and that I felt really cared for – the customer service is excellent, with the front desk friendly (and they could have been snooty couldn’t they?), the therapists thoughtful. I wasn’t hauled out after my treatment either, encouraged to relax and use the communal lounge for as long as I wanted.

a parting gift

So was my inner vibrancy stimulated? You betcha. After a drink of healthy water, I went on another bike ride with Mr MC, followed by a dip in the sea, and the best night sleep I’ve had in ages.

This month (September) they’ve at least two offers on. Perhaps I should organise a little special pamper day trip for Muddy readers. Any takers…?!
