what’s on guide Thurs 14 – Wed 20 Apr
Penryn Picture house, Temperance Hall, Penryn, Thurs 14 Apr
Pop-up cinema fun with Penryn Picture House on Thursday: A hot hot hot three-part evening of live Venezuelan music from Juan Graterol y su Conjunto Gozón, organic freshly-made veg kebabs from Shellfish Pig and a screening of the brilliant and award-winning Wim Wenders documentary of the re-forming of the Buena Vista Social Club by Ry Cooder. The film documents how Ry Cooder, long-time friend of Wenders, brought together the ensemble of legendary Cuban musicians to record an album (also called Buena Vista Social Club) and to perform only twice, with a full line-up. The band will be playing before and after the screening and playing the evening out at local bar Number 20 in Penryn.
Best book Friday off to recover.

Move into the Garden Room for cocktails and canapés, with a make-up demonstration by professional make-up artists Jo, from Paul & Joe Beauty. The Bedruthan Spa team will be doing hair feathers, for anyone who would like one. This will be followed by a stunning two-course Mediterranean Buffet feast, followed by live music.
Ticket price includes champagne on arrival, fashion show, a two course buffet plus a goodie bag – you’ll find product treats, exclusive savings from the spa and a Roos Beach voucher. Barbara Hepworth 40th anniversary, St Ives Mon 18 Apr
Babs Hepworth is a family favourite with us at Muddy Cornwall – the kids love her sculptures. She first came to live here with her husband Ben Nicholson and their young family at the outbreak of war in 1939. She lived and worked in Trewyn studios – now the Barbara Hepworth Museum – from 1949 until her death in 1975. The Tate St Ives are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden with a special series of events and activities. If you’re in St Ives, take in a visit to her home and studio.

Looe Island guided walk, Looe, Wed
Ooh I could have done with this last week when the muddies and I walked to the island at low tide – to avoid being washed away we had to turn straight back as soon as we hit the island beach. Anyway, a guided tour by one of the Island’s wardens sounds a great idea. A short boat ride, then a few hours being introduced to the nature and history of the island – its a real haven with an established grey seal colony on the north side as well as seabirds and insects. Unfortunately, this event is not wheelchair friendly. Access to the Island may involve a climb over the side of a boat. From the boat there is a narrow ramp which, depending on sea conditions, may move and be awash with seawater.
£25 2:30pm – 6:30pm Looe Island Nature Reserve, Buller’s Quay, East Looe, PL13 1AT
