As chosen by Alicia Livingstone, curator/director of Perranporth's super-stylish new gallery Far & Wild
If you’ve visited Perranporth recently you’ve probably have noticed a beautiful new shop front on my hometown high street. Far & Wild
is a large gallery and lifestyle store that’s a trove of local treasures.
Founder-curator Alicia Livingstone’s dream was to create a space that promotes Cornish artists and makers alongside international brands and unique finds from around the world. The gallery has been curated to create and inspire an individual interiors style that feels crafty, eclectic and beautiful.
I asked Alicia for her top tips for buying local this festive season – and here is the crop of brilliant Cornish brands she recommends for Christmas.
Celtic & Co.
This Newquay-based, family run company is best known for its beautiful sheepskin boots, however I especially love its range of luxury knitwear (my favourite piece in store right now is the Geelong slouch neck in navy, which I think is the warmest, softest jumper around), and unusual homeware such as their curly white-faced Dartmoor sheepskin rugs, and beautiful Nordic reindeer-hide throws. (all available at Far & Wild)
St Eval Candle Company
The ultimate go-to for a beautiful, stylish Cornish present for friends and family. As well as its iconic Inspiritus scent, we’re also stocking the divine Orange and Cinnamon and Figgy Pudding candles. It’s a fabulous olfactory experience when you step inside Far & Wild this winter.
Really Big Bubbles
We and our children love these enormous bubble wands and mixture, which make bubbles so big you can almost step inside! Often seen drifting over Perranporth beach on balmy Saturday mornings. We share their ethos of thoughtful gifts to engage children and families in fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
Made for Life Organics
Every skincare product is made by hand in Cornwall using herbs, flowers and oils from as close as quality will allow. Made For Life was the first UK company to achieve 100% organic certification across the entire collection. I love their Daily Radiance Facial Cleansing Balm and Tone and Firm Body Oil.
These quirky calendars, diaries and stationery are made by a Perranporth based company, and have worldwide domination for the title of independent calendar of the year. We’re also the sole stockist of their beautiful soft and recycled leather diary covers in a rainbow of colours.
Inspired by the Cornish coastline, this range blends nautical, contemporary design and colour, with traditional weaving methods and natural fabrics. We love their waterproof-backed wool picnic blankets with leather carrying straps, and beautifully soft baby blankets with wave and tide prints.
Founded in 1920, the Leach Pottery, St Ives, is among the most respected and influential potteries in the world. Among our other studio ceramicists, we’ve proud to stock their beautiful standard wear, made with clay from Doble’s quarry in St Agnes, such as these mugs and jugs in Tenmoku and Dolomite.
Green & Blue
With the goal to change the world from their Perranporth-based workshop, Green & Blue produce Bee bricks to encourage the growth of solitary bees and natural pollination, as well as their award-winning Birdball bird house and feeders, which make stylish gifts for garden and wildlife lovers.
Jewellery Designer Emily Nixon
Inspired by living on the coast in Cornwall, with her distinctive eye, Emily Nixon has created a range of jewellery with a sea-worn character. We love her tumbled silver bracelets imprinted with rocks, cockles and urchin shells.
Hot Surf 69 & IGLU Wetsuits
Home-grown Perranporth surfboard company Hot Surf 69 design quality-made foam surfboards at affordable prices, with the ethos that enjoying the water shouldn’t cost the Earth. My children learnt to surf on them, and they’re performance-focused too, if ever I have a minute to grab a ride myself.
Sister company IGLU makes premium and affordable, super-warm wetsuits, allowing little ones hours of fun in the water throughout the seasons. Best of all, they’re easy to put on, and so robust they’re perfect to hand down and they also do a trade-in service.
This is Far & Wild’s beautiful festive shop front, adding a sprinkling of seasonal class to Perranporth high street.
