6 Tips for Managing the Stress of Everyday Life
Small lifestyle changes to try that can improve well-being
As we head into the festive period which we all know throws up myriad reasons to feel a little, shall we say, tested, Muddy went to try out one of Thera-Sea‘s free stress management workshops. Led by specialist mental health nurse and stress management consultant Katy Griffin, here’s a quick run-down of a few tips that might help manage the push and pull of the next few weeks (or, you know, just life in general). Herbal tea at the ready.
1/ GET OUTSIDE
Even if it is just with your morning cuppa for 10 minutes. The blast of cold air and daylight does wonders for helping melatonin production, which in turn helps you sleep better.
2/ GET PHYSICAL
Get the blood moving with some kind of physical activity. Even a brisk walk once a week is better than nothing. If you can walk by the sea, even better, as the negative hydrogen ions help neutralise damaging free radicals.
3/ LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
You don’t always have to do something which scares you – sometimes you just need to take it easy.
4/ WRITE DOWN YOUR WORRIES
Try keeping a notebook by the side of your bed. Before you sleep, write down your concerns or to-do-list. Then close the book and don’t think about it again until the morning.
5/ FIND SPACE TO WIND DOWN
Look at your bedtime routine and try and carve out some time for yourself to unpack the pressure of the day. Don’t look at any screens for an hour before sleep.
6/BEWARD SUGAR CRASHES!
We all grab things on the go when we’re busy but try and find time to eat actual food – stick to foods that are not processed. Your body will thank you for it in the long run.
