<p>First a fishing harbour, and then the UK&#8217;s surf capital, Newquay is now a thriving coastal town with a diverse year-round community, having successfully shrugged off its previous &#8216;stag party central&#8217; reputation and moved past being only known for the nightlife. Families and creatives have flocked to the town, with the commensurate foodie and cultural opportunities springing up &#8211; from galleries to new cafés, there&#8217;s always something going on in Newquay. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eat-nbsp">EAT&nbsp;</h2>

<p>From the fancy restaurants in the 5* star hotels to casual dining round the harbour, there&#8217;s something for everyone in Newquay. We&#8217;re fans of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/boxandbarber/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Box and Barber</a>,&nbsp;Cove 24 and the harbour food truck complex at The Boathouse. The locals love burger joint, <a href="https://www.herdburger.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Herd</a>, and new sister site Rosa, where Gilmores used to be. We also rate the pizzas at <a href="https://www.jamjar.cafe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jam Jar</a> in Crantock just out of town,&nbsp;<a href="https://sushea.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sushea</a> just above the harbour,&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.greatwesternbeach.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Western Beach Café</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thefishhousefistral.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fish House</a>&nbsp;down at Fistral.&nbsp;<a href="https://newquayorchard.co.uk/canteen/">Heart and Soul at the Orchard</a> is also good for lunch, as is Pavilion (other branches are in London Fields).</p>



<p>For a drink you can&#8217;t beat a cocktail at Tom Thumb, a cheeky glass of vino at The Bottle, or Secret Garden, Lost Bar or a pint of Verdant at the collab with Sink Inn at Pentire House. If it’s pubs you’re after, you’ll have to travel a little further afield to find a gastropub, with <a href="https://lewinnicklodge.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lewinnick Lodge</a>&nbsp;(pictured), the&nbsp;<a href="https://theplumemitchell.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Plume of Feathers</a>&nbsp;at Mitchell and Adam Handling&#8217;s new opening, <a href="https://www.tartanfoxpub.co.uk/">The Tartan Fox</a> at Summercourt, all favourites.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop"><strong>SHOP</strong></h2>



<p>The high street is a curious mix of surf brands, a smattering of independents including <a href="https://mmwstore.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MMW Revolver</a> and the usual high street suspects, and don’t miss Muddy Award winning <a href="https://m.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100064049255005" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beautique</a>. On the outskirts of town is Nansledan, where you&#8217;ll find Muddy Award finalists <a href="https://www.facebook.com/HomeNansledan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Home Nansledan</a> and <a href="http://www.blissbridalgowns.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bliss Bridal Gowns</a> and <a href="https://andkin.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&amp;Kin</a> selling casual clothes, as well as hairdressers, a beauty salon and more B2B businesses. <a href="https://www.marcelrodrigues.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marcel Rodrigues Interiors</a> doesn’t just sell his handmade hats, they’re also an interiors shop too. Muddy Award-winner, <a href="https://loveoflemons.co.uk/">Love of Lemons</a>, is nearby, selling all sorts of vintage fashion, and Sabzi has a shop next door. Nearby Fraddon at the A30 has the nearest thing to a Cornish shopping centre (Boots, M&amp;S, TK Maxx, Next and Mountain Warehouse) and it’s only a short hop to Truro for Waitrose, The White Company and M&amp;S.</p>

<p>Newquay is most famous for it’s surfing beaches, of which Fistral is the star, hosting annual surfing competitions including the Boardmasters Festival. Newquay has seven beaches within walking distance of the town centre, including <a href="https://www.lustyglaze.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lusty Glaze</a>, home to events such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.silentdiscoyoga.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Silent Disco Beach Yoga</a>&nbsp;as well as being a Muddy Award-winning wedding venue. </p>



<p>Newquay Activity Centre&nbsp;was set up by pro bodyboarder, Rob Barber, and will teach you to surf, bodyboard, coasteer,&nbsp;stand-up paddle board, kayaking&nbsp;or try something totally extreme. Women and Waves surf collective offers women-only surfing lessons, as does Newquay Ladies Surf Club, and there&#8217;s at least two organised groups of wild swimming women who meet at the beaches in the town (Towan or the Harbour) daily for cold water swims.</p>

<p>Just down the road is Kestle Mill and one of Cornwall’s lesser known but still lovely National Trust properties&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/trerice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trerice</a>&nbsp;(above, an Elizabethan manor house with fine interiors and a beautiful walled garden) and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lappavalley.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lappa Valley</a>&nbsp;steam railway. Other activities for kids include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newquayzoo.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newquay Zoo</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/cornwall/newquay-leisure-world" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leisure Centre</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluereefaquarium.co.uk/newquay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blue Reef Aquarium</a>&nbsp;as well as the usual leisure facilities and mini golf. If gardens are your thing, there’s also the<a href="https://www.japanesegarden.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;Japanese Garden</a>&nbsp;at St Mawgan, and Spaceport Cornwall, where the first satellite launch from UK soil took place recently, is out by the airport. Further out of town you&#8217;ll find Lanteague which is home to all sorts of loveliness including a florist, art school, wine school and some great bread at the Gorse Bakery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Bringing together the best of creativity, community and connection through spoken word, open-mic, music, workshops, performance,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sproutspoken.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sprout Spoken</a>, and Spout &amp; About host regular events, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.clemobooks.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clemo Books</a><strong>&nbsp;</strong>is an independent bookshop with a difference. They exist online and pop up at events across Newquay – like the monthly farmers market, as well as hosting visiting authors for book tours and other literary events &#8211; and are Crowdfunding for a permanent shop presence in the town centre. Meanwhile, theatre buffs can check out the <a href="https://lanetheatre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lane Theatre</a>, run by Newquay Amateur Dramatic Society (whose Honorary Patrons include none other than&nbsp;Philip Schofield).</p>

<p>Properties in Newquay had an overall average price of £364,226 over the last year.</p>



<p>The majority of sales in Newquay during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £266,827. Terraced properties sold for an average of £321,234, with detached properties fetching £521,830.</p>

<p>Lots to choose from in Newquay by way of nurseries, including Little Fistral Nursery, Newquay Preschool, Small Wonders and First Steps. Purpose-built outdoorsy nursery,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.naturallylearning.co.uk/nansledan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Naturally Learning</a>, opened earlier in 2023 in Nansledan. Quintrell Downs Montessori School is also just down the road.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools-nbsp">SCHOOLS&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Newquay Junior Academy and&nbsp;<a href="https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/21/136869">St Columb Minor Academy</a>&nbsp;are rated ‘Good’ as is local state secondary Newquay Tretherras. Nansledan has a village primary&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nansledanschool.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Skol Nansledan</a>&nbsp;and local secondary Treviglas Academy both opened in 2019 and are so new that there are no Oftsed reports yet. If you’re after independents, you’re going to have to travel – the nearest are in&nbsp;<a href="https://dev.muddystilettos.co.uk/cornwall/best-places-to-live/cornwall/best-places-to-live-hayle/">Hayle</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://dev.muddystilettos.co.uk/cornwall/best-places-to-live/cornwall/truro/">Truro</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://dev.muddystilettos.co.uk/cornwall/best-places-to-live/best-places-to-live-launceston/">Launceston</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret-nbsp">BEST KEPT SECRET&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Cribbar is a reef based wave off the Towan Headland creating huge waves which attract big wave surfers from across the country and beyond when it fires during the winter. You can watch the best from the headland underneath The Headland Hotel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute"><strong>COMMUTE</strong></h2>



<p>Extremely handy for flying as the airport is a 10 min drive. Take the Atlantic Coast Line to Par to pick up the Cornish mainline through to London Paddington. The 90 min drive to Exeter is probably the quickest non-flying route to London, as you can pick up a fast train to London taking just over 2hrs (the train from Newquay to Par takes 45 mins, then the journey onto Paddington via more coastal route up to Plymouth takes a further 4hrs). By car, Truro is a 30 min and the A30 just 10 mins, making Newquay well connected for commuting elsewhere in Cornwall.</p>
