It&#8217;s a classic for a reason &#8211; this bitter cocktail is a popular one as it is so easy to make. History suggests that the first was made in Caffè Casoni in Florence when Count Camillo asked for his Americano (vermouth, campari and soda) to be made stronger, with gin replacing the water.



Just use equal parts gin, vermouth and a bitter red/orange liqueur (the most ubiquitous is Campari, but see below). Pop some ice in your cocktail shaker, add the spirits in turn, and mix for a moment.



Take a rocks glass, add a large ice cube and then pour over your mix. Garnish with an orange twist if you like.

Choose your Cornish gin &#8211; this <a href="https://www.foweyvalleycider.co.uk/product-page/foy-gin-500ml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Foy Gin</a> is award-winning (and we&#8217;ve got a <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/reader-treats/win-a-gin-hamper-fowey-valley-cidery-distillery-cornwall/">hamper to give away</a> too). Created by master distiller Barrie, Foy Gin is a small batch drink, distilled five times from their own alcohol. They say it has &#8220;lots of juniper, a mid-layer of four&nbsp;citruses&nbsp;and just a hint of fragrant spice underneath&#8221;.

<a href="https://shop.knightor.com/collections/vermouth?">Knightor Vermouth</a> &#8211; made with grapes grown on Cornwall&#8217;s south coast, we think the Rosso or the Rosé works best in this negroni. They say &#8220;A rich bittersweet English vermouth. Aromas leap out of the glass of bitter orange zest, aniseed, cinchona and gentian overlaid with gentle spice. The palate starts fruity, but finishes with a lingering bitter marmalade finish,&nbsp;with a hint of spiciness&#8220;.
