<p>Right on the harbour front at Fowey stands <a href="https://www.thekingfowey.co.uk/">The King of Prussia</a>; an iconic pink pub that&#8217;s been serving up drinks for centuries. The pub gets its name from the nickname of a notorious smuggler who ruled Prussia Cove, just a little further along the south coast, and who lived in the building in the 1780s. Various extensions have been added over time, including the front steps which were added in 1905 by Walter Hicks. He was the founder of Hicks &amp; Company which later became the St. Austell Brewery, who still own the building today. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>



<p>The current landlords are Richard and Harriet who took on the lease at the end of 2023. Experienced hoteliers who moved to Cornwall with their young family, they have revamped the main building, the six rooms upstairs, and the under stilts area, now The Oyster Shuck. The pink exterior remains, although the branding and general aesthetic have been cleaned up, with the building&#8217;s beautiful Georgian lines now allowed a bit of room to shine.</p>

<p>Although you can of course still head over just for a drink, and they&#8217;ve got a great cocktail list as well as all the usual St Austell beers, The King of Prussia&#8217;s main focus is now a more foodie menu, leaning towards fine dining at lunch and really going for it the evenings under the eye of ex-Wig and Pen head chef, Scott Williams. </p>

<p>Locals and visitors alike will be missing nearby neighbours at Fitzroy, who have not re-opened after their usual hibernation, so a new buzzy foodie location on the same street has been very welcome.</p>



<p>In the main dining room, book table two in the window for the best views; when we came in for lunch it was quite peaceful enjoying our food by the big window, idly watching the comings and goings on the quay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>Three options &#8211; the tables in the Oyster Shuck at ground level are first come, first served, and there&#8217;s a great casual menu: oysters, obvs, as well as lobster rolls, moules, fish finger sandwiches and caesar salads &#8211; plus wine (other drinks available) all of which give an excellent holiday vibe and it&#8217;s a real sun-trap too. </p>

<p>Head upstairs and inside at lunch time and the menu is more formal than lobster rolls, but still on the casual side and are ordered à la carte (you don&#8217;t have to get pudding, basically, but you would be missing out) and you can get chips with everything, if you like (and why not). The salads, oysters, and moules are available upstairs too, plus more pub-esque lunch dishes and sharing boards.</p>



<p>I enjoyed an excellent terrine with pickled veg; my guest thought the spaghetti vongole very good, and we both enjoyed the rosé recommended by Richard. Our puddings were more of a nod to the kind of fine dining food that Scott is serving in the evening: think gels, interesting textures and flavours of ice-cream and biscuits, with pickled fruit and micro-herbs. </p>

<p>Book a table in the evening and food has an extra theatrical element; Scott served us some canapés to showcase some of his creations and we enjoyed the pops of flavour and texture and unexpected sensations, all beautifully presented. Think beef, or plaice, or pigeon and mushroom wellington, and you&#8217;re on the right lines. One foot in an elevated pub menu, one firmly on fine dining.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk">PILLOW TALK</h2>

<p>Six en-suite bedrooms are available upstairs, decorated by Harriet, using a number of items she also sells in her shop, Salt Society, a Muddy finalist in this year&#8217;s awards. Design is nautical but not blue and white; stylish and appropriate to the location without feeling too theme-like, with land+water toiletries in every bathroom. I wasn&#8217;t staying, but after such a great lunch, I could have easily taken a nap on the very comfortable looking beds. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY</h2>



<p>We returned the next week with our kids and ate in The Oyster Shuck, so yes definitely. They are also welcome at lunchtime upstairs, and dinner too, although the food is more grown-up than ordinary pub food. Both Harriet &amp; Richard, and Scott, have young children, so they know their way around child-friendly food, but bear in mind it is a two or three course menu in the evening.</p>

Right on the quay itself outside the pub is the bijou acquarium, always worth a look if you&#8217;re with young kids, and there is a little museum round the corner. Don&#8217;t miss the <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/thomas-thrussell/">Thrussell&#8217;s statue</a> Rook with a Book statue, and you can get a little boat ride from here as well &#8211; either a guided river tour, which we&#8217;ve done before and much enjoyed &#8211; or rent your own. The Polruan ferry leaves from here at higher tides and out of season, but it&#8217;s not far to walk to Whitehouse Quay where it leaves from the rest of the time (where you&#8217;ll also find a revamped tidal paddling pool, and a rather nice little beach when the tide is out). You&#8217;re also nice and central for the shops &#8211; including Harriet&#8217;s lovely Salt Society on North Street. </p>

<p>Yes, both in the main dining room and the Oyster Shuck downstairs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>The Oyster Shuck is at ground level; the restaurant and rooms accessible only by the front steps.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Foodies will love the new menus, and the rooms are currently an excellent price for a waterfront stay. Book in while you can still get a table / room reservation.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> If you were a fan of the old bar, you may not think you&#8217;ll love the new fine-dining element, but you can still get the same St Austell beers inside! It is undeniably a more luxe experience, while it does retain some of the authentic old pub feel of the previous iteration; it&#8217;s a definite zhushing, which won&#8217;t appeal to everyone.</p>
