<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-where">WHAT? WHERE?</h2>



<p><a href="https://theplumemitchell.co.uk/muddy-stillettos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Plume of Feathers</a> is a friendly, welcoming, family-owned 16th century coaching pub, handily located in the centre of Cornwall. Close to both Newquay and Truro, and just off the A30, it is an excellent base from which to explore all that Cornwall has to offer. </p>

<p>Alongside the more traditional bar area (dogs are allowed, and sport is on the TV), the dining room serves classic British pub food with a modern touch, showcasing seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. Eat in the more modern light filled conservatory, or, for cosier pub charm, you’ll find exposed beams, a roaring fire, and a bar serving Cornish ales and beers. Across the courtyard, you’ll find 20 designer bedrooms and a destination charge point for Tesla and other electric cars making The Plume a perfect stop-off point to access the rest of the Duchy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>



<p>Part snug old pub with exposed beams and low ceilings, part Farrow &amp; Ball hued modern conservatory and renovated barns, the Plume is a local&#8217;s favourite and hidden gem of a village pub. It is warm and welcoming, with fires burning inside; the traditional beams and old inn vibe are balanced by a palette of blonde wood and plenty of indoor plants including giant olive trees in huge pots, making it contemporary but also retaining a cosy cocooning feel.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>Food is under the care of head chef Andrew Dudley and his team, bringing together the land and sea in a traditional pub classics menu. This is the nicest kind of pub food, decent but not overwhelming portions that are well cooked, and nicely presented with no chopped parsley in sight. My pie with mash and gravy was lovely, with beautiful steamed veg, three kinds of mustard on offer, and inspired by being in a proper pub, I teamed it with a pint of expertly poured Guinness, although perfectly lovely red wine was also on the menu. Maybe I was inspired by the upcoming Six Nations that will be screened in the pub, although not in the restaurant.</p>

<p>Take your date, take your mates, or your fam for a proper Sunday roast. Starters (from £6) included vegan and veg options as well as a great venison scotch egg with a properly runny yolk. Mains (from £18) were a good choice of the classics &#8211; burgers, steaks, lasagne, and pie. Ice-cream, bread and butter pudding and Cornish cheeses were on the pudding list (from £9)&nbsp;but I was very happy with our Baked Alaska. Drinks wise, there was an extensive choice of the local Tarquin&#8217;s Gin, plus wine list courtesy of family-owned Berkmanns. We enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail which was nicely made. </p>

<p>Breakfast is served for a generous four hours each morning and features the same enjoyable options as sister hotel, <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/travel/uk/hotels-inns/review-lewinnick-lodge-newquay/">The Lewinnick Lodge</a> over in nearby Newquay, meaning it is perfect if you&#8217;re staying for work, or with early rising kids, but also good for a post-lie-in fry up. The full Cornish is excellent and I enjoyed my pancakes and coffee. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk">PILLOW TALK</h2>



<p>For a pub, the rooms are generously sized and extremely quiet. Think coaching inn and you&#8217;ll be thinking by definition near a main road (which it is) but this is Cornwall and also very quiet in the evening &#8211; no dull M6 roar here &#8211; and the rooms are all tucked in away from the even the village road, let alone the A30. </p>

<p>Almost all the 20 rooms have Nespresso machines, walk-in monsoon showers and many have free-standing baths too, complete with Bramley bubble bath. With huge beds &#8211; the mattresses are by Royal Warrant holders Hypnos &#8211; no singles zipped together here! &#8211; and comfy elegant furniture, there’s plenty to recommend for a cheeky night away here, and should work bring you to the area, there&#8217;s enough space (and free wifi) for calls and emails.</p>

<p>The larger rooms emperor-sized beds, and all rooms have Egyptian cotton sheets and little luxuries including Bramley toiletries, white gowns and face cloths &#8211; plus huge 42 inch TVs for some serious bedtime watching. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY</h2>



<p>Family rooms include an emperor-size bed for the adults and a separate single bed (plus another if needed) and there&#8217;s a children&#8217;s menu on offer so it&#8217;s definitely kid-friendly, although there&#8217;s no specific children&#8217;s activities (e.g. no playground) and for those without kids there&#8217;s a pleasing lack of piles of highchairs on display (although they are available on request). </p>

<p>The local village might be small but it is well-positioned. As well as being extremely convenient for the A30, Mitchell is also a good central place with access to Newquay, Truro and more, and some say a great place to begin and end cycle rides. In the 1960s Cornwall was described ‘as the centre of beatnik life’ with the famed Folk Cottage in Mitchell opening in 1965, although sadly now long closed.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Selected rooms at levels are dog friendly, and dogs are allowed in the bar area, where you can also eat. Two different dog-friendly walks can be accessed from the village; nearby the beaches of Fistral, Crantock, Perranporth (below) and Holywell are dog-friendly all year. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>Well thought through &#8211; there are no steps into the main entrance from the large car park, and the venue has a wide entrance door. Tables with extra space can be requested. Rooms are accessed via ramps or on the ground floor, with wide doorways and walk-in showers, with space at the bedside. All dietary requirements are catered for, just make the team aware. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for</strong>: As well as a great place to stop off on your journey, or, as a handy central meeting point for meals out, Sunday lunch at <a href="https://theplumemitchell.co.uk/muddy-stillettos/">The Plume of Feathers</a> is lovely and there&#8217;s a regular pub quiz. A great choice if you&#8217;re after a comfortable and stylish place to stay but don’t need the full facilities of a big hotel or need to be near the A30 for access.</p>



<p><strong>Not for</strong>: At the end of the day, it&#8217;s still a pub, so it&#8217;s more proper portions and a pint than fine dining and a tasting menu.
