<p>Themes are a lovely idea, and where a lot of new parents start. However, if you&#8217;re after a room that will grow with your child, when you start gathering toys that are bright &#8211; and let&#8217;s be honest, garish &#8211; your cohesive look will quickly disappear and your work will go to waste. </p>



<p>My advice would be to keep your design fluid. Try and use a colour palette with a mixture of textures and patterns to create an inspiring space yet one that is flexible. </p>



<p>I always take the following into consideration:</p>



<p>&#8211; <strong>What do things feel like? </strong>For little children, sensory is key so opting for tufty cushions, fluffy rugs and cuddly toys is a must. </p>



<p>&#8211; <strong>What is the ambience?</strong> I favour a sense of calm and sanctuary in a child&#8217;s room, and using fairy lights offers ambient light in a fun way. Opt for mains to save on batteries! A fun lampshade is easily updated too.</p>



<p>&#8211; <strong>Plenty to look at</strong>. Artwork doesn’t need to be childish and using a broad and vibrant palette, much more grown-up prints can work, with the added bonus you won&#8217;t have to replace them too quickly.</p>



<p>&#8211; <strong>Patterns? </strong>Curtains and blinds should go with your colour scheme but choose stripes, or checks, which will stay relevant even as your child grows, and add thermal black out linings for warmth and dark.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-to-spend-your-budget-beds">Where to spend your budget: Beds!</h2>



<p>We spend a third of our life in bed, so it is worth making sure it is a good one. I invested in a pocket sprung mattress on an upholstered ottoman divan base, which has the dual purpose of giving an amazing night sleep for my daughter and the ottoman storage is SO handy. </p>



<p>Choose soft bed linen to finish it off for a perfect night sleep &#8211; being the right temperature, warm in the bed in a cool room with black out blinds will give your kids the best chance of sleeping through, although they won&#8217;t always!</p>



<p>I rate Snuzcot &#8211; the side can come off when you want to transition them and they are a really solid and neat design. You don’t have loads of holes with bolts on display! </p>
