WHAT? WHERE?

An all-girls day and boarding school five minutes’ walk from the centre of Truro, Truro High School for Girls manages to feel both tucked away and impressively well connected. For families in Cornwall – and for those further afield considering boarding – accessibility is a genuine plus.

With around 371 pupils (including 46 boarders), this is reassuringly small. Class sizes average 14, which translates into noticeable individual attention without tipping into hothouse territory. It’s academically ambitious but not feverish; the emphasis here is on steady stretch rather than competitive heat. As Cornwall’s only all-girls school, and deservedly recognised as a World Class School for High Performance Learning in 2024, Truro High School for Girls is a shining example of the benefits of single-sex education.

Founded in 1880 by Edward Benson, then Bishop of Truro (later Archbishop of Canterbury), the school began with just seven girls – including his own daughters – at a time when serious academic education for girls was still radical. That founding spirit of quiet defiance still lingers. This is not a brash, chest-beating school, but one that clearly believes girls should leave equipped – intellectually and emotionally – to hold their own anywhere.

Cornwall may not be the most obviously international corner of the UK, but the presence of overseas boarders gives the school a broader cultural lens than you might expect. The result is a community that feels grounded, but not insular.

FACILITIES

You’d never guess from the road how much is tucked behind the original façade. Beyond the traditional main building sit 15 acres and a network of newer spaces housing art, music, IT and languages, including a new Prep School STEM lab with 3D printer. What lifts this beyond the expected is scale of ambition rather than square footage. A professional theatre space and commercial-standard art gallery are unusual in a school of this size – and particularly in Cornwall – and signal a genuine commitment to the creative arts rather than token provision.

The Sixth Form Centre has been recently refurbished, and feels grown-up without being grand: shared study space for all sixth formers (not just boarders), a kitchen/living area that encourages informal downtime, and quieter rooms for focused revision. It strikes the right balance between independence and oversight. Boarding houses, wellbeing room and nurse are sensibly interconnected, reinforcing the school’s integrated approach rather than siloed departments.

SPORT

Sport here is purposeful rather than dominant, led by Kat Redd, an acclaimed English hockey coach, recognised as the 2019 England Hockey Coach of the Year for her work in Cornwall. There are extensive playing fields, an astroturf, tennis courts, new strength and conditioning fitness suite for senior pupils and staff, and a heated indoor swimming pool – strong provision for a school this size – and participation is universal.

Pupils compete at county and regional level in hockey, netball and football, as well as equestrian and archery, with staff supported by visiting professional coaches including links with Plymouth Argyle. That said, this is not a sports factory; individual and team talent is nurtured (a current Team GB archer, girls involved in competitive car racing including a Formula E build project), but the emphasis remains on movement, teamwork and confidence rather than elite output.

For sporty girls, there is depth. For less sporty girls, there is space.

CREATIVE ARTS

Creative provision is a genuine strength. The professional-standard gallery space – used by visiting artists as well as pupils – gives art a seriousness that goes beyond classroom display boards. Facilities include the Piran Performing Arts Centre theatre, Kensey Dance Studio, art and pottery studios, and strong music provision.

The school leverages its central Truro location cleverly, staging annual shows at Hall for Cornwall and maintaining close links with Truro Cathedral for choral events. An impressive 76% of students learn a musical instrument, and even at senior level over 25% of the girls sing in the choir and a similar number of prep girls are in the junior choir and Rock Steady band.

This is not creativity squeezed into spare periods; it is visible, resourced and culturally embedded. Art is more than just a taught subject at Truro High. It’s rare to find a commercial-standard gallery space in a school this size, where visiting professional artists both use the space and run workshops with the students.

LITTLIES

Truro High prep starts with nursery at 3+, and gently leads into school life, with an average of 14 children per class, a broad curriculum and a long list of exciting activities to try. No 7+ hot-housing here – formal testing waits until 11, which will be music to many parents’ ears. The smallest students are so well looked after, with older ones lending a hand to help settle them in and find their way around.

The fact that the prep is on the same site as the senior school means that the transition from one to the other is fairly seamless for the kids and also, unusually, prep pupils are taught by specialist teachers, from Reception upwards, in music, sport, IT, languages (three of them), drama, art, swimming, English and maths.

SIXTH FORM

Most girls stay on for Sixth Form, which speaks volumes about continuity and satisfaction. Science and engineering are clear focus areas, yet art and textiles also attract pupils specifically to the school.

Students take up to four A-levels in Y12, dropping to three in Y13, plus their bespoke Endeavour and Future Ready programmes. Destinations include Bath, Exeter and Edinburgh, with the occasional Oxbridge success. It’s solid rather than headline-chasing – a sixth form that supports individual direction rather than pushing a single narrative.

ACADEMICS

This is not an exam factory, but it is academically serious – and individual success ranges from GB athletes to Oxbridge leavers. The school is explicit about valuing progress and value-added outcomes over league table positioning – a stance that will reassure families wary of high-pressure environments, though those who like national comparisons may need to dig deeper.

Many pupils exceed predicted grades at GCSE and A Level. Maths is streamed from Y7, science from Y10, and all pupils study three sciences to GCSE, and outdoor learning is timetabled for both Prep and Senior students. Coding is universal, languages are taken seriously (two from French, Spanish or Latin at GCSE), and the Y9 ‘Skills for Life’ carousel adds practical breadth.

The 2025 GCSE and A Level results speak for themselves. Across 22 subjects at GCSE level, over 40% of grades were achieved at levels 9-7, with some subjects achieving over 80% at top grade levels. 40% awarded at A*/A and over 60% of all grades at A*-B, including 100% A* in EPQ, 100% A*/A in English, Latin, Chinese and Spanish. In 2025, all Truro High girls secured places at their chosen universities, including Classics at Oxford, Law at Cardiff, Biochemistry at Bristol, Neuroscience at Exeter, Business and Marketing at York, and Fashion Marketing at Southampton.

Admissions are based on fit rather than pure academic filtering, which explains the balanced tone: ambitious, but not exclusionary. Most Prep girls continue into Senior school, with more girls joining in Y7, Y9 and there’s a further intake at Sixth Form. Most girls stay on after GCSEs, although some move to Truro College where the iBac is on offer.

PASTORAL CARE

Wellbeing here feels structured rather than slogan-led. The School Nurse is also the Mental Health Lead, alongside named staff across the breadth of the school, who offer tailored support to anyone who needs it. Homework journals include psychology-informed reflection prompts alongside practical planning tools, and there is a visible attempt to embed resilience rather than react to crisis.

The school’s message focus on what your body can do, not how it looks – is consistent and modern, particularly important in an all-girls setting. Pastoral oversight is layered and clearly organised. In a school of this size, girls are unlikely to slip through unnoticed. That visibility won’t suit those craving anonymity, but for most families it will be reassuring.

SEND

For an additional charge, pupils with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) are able to receive support from a dedicated team of fully qualified specialist teachers. Part of the initial assessment day are workshops to identify where girls might need extra support, but the school is not able to take students with significant learning needs. It’s inclusive within its academic framework, but it is not a specialist SEND setting.

BOARDING

Boarding numbers reflect national trends, with a strong proportion of overseas pupils. The atmosphere is intentionally homely rather than institutional. Younger boarders share rooms; sixth formers have single en-suites, marking a clear step towards independence.

Weekly boarding begins in Y9, with flexi options before that. Weekend programmes make intelligent use of Cornwall’s geography – coast, moorland, climbing, cinema and local attractions – turning location into advantage.

This is boarding designed to support, not dominate.

THE HEAD

Softly spoken but unmistakably steely, Sarah Matthews joined Truro High in 2018 from St Mary’s, Shaftesbury, and has since steered the school through a period few heads would envy – pandemic disruption, rapid digital transformation and mounting financial pressures in the independent sector.

She is visibly hands-on. During our visit she spoke about pupils across year groups with easy familiarity, and her commitment runs deep; living onsite despite her family being elsewhere and personally collecting boarders from the airport. Under her tenure, wellbeing has been given sharper focus, technological provision accelerated (the school moved to full online learning from day one of lockdown), and initiatives such as Future Ready, Aspiring Medics and High Performance Learning have helped embed a more outward-looking, future-facing mindset.

She leaves at the end of this academic year for a new role at Cranleigh International, departing a school that feels settled, purposeful and quietly confident rather than in transition. Her own daughter will remain as a boarder, a telling vote of confidence in the community she has helped shape.

QUIRKS

The UK’s only land-based solar observatory, the Roseland Observatory, sits on site – not something you see every day. The school’s Greenpower Club is also the only one nationally to operate as a Car Club with Motorsport UK, linking engineering projects with real-world accreditation.

Staff are demonstrably talented at their subjects including Rob Norman, long-standing director of music, who is also one part of the Oggy Men, and performed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury last year. GB athlete Zoe Levin teaches sports, and one of the history teachers took a Commonwealth Games medal and therefore hosts the fencing club.

WRAP AROUND CARE

There is no Saturday school beyond some sport. After-school provision is extensive until 6pm for all pupils, with around 80 clubs spanning animal care to surfing, fencing to crochet included in fees. Their programme was highly commended in the 2025 Muddy Best Schools Awards.

The philosophy is simple: every girl should do something she loves for at least an hour a day. Lunch breaks are structured to allow both eating and club participation – a small but telling detail.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

Personal devices cannot be used from when the pupils enter the school site and until they have left the school site at the end of the day. Sixth formers can use their personal devices in the Sixth Form Centre but cannot use them around the school or in front of younger pupils.

All pupils in the senior school have a school issued iPad for use in school, part of a mental-health-aware, well-filtered digital strategy.

TRANSPORT

Truro High operates school buses from all over Cornwall with convenient pick-ups covering five bus routes. Two shuttle buses to Truro Station run every morning and every evening.

FEES

Yearly day pre-prep fees inc VAT start at £11,430 rising to £18,561.60 for y5/6 and £19,530 in seniors. Compulsory lunch fees are £915 (juniors) and £1200 (seniors). All homework clubs and text books are included in these day fees.

For the Nursery funded hours are subject to entitlement and a child becomes eligible for this in the term after their 3rd birthday.

WORD ON THE GROUND

Locally, Truro High is known as the nurturing option that still delivers academically. Parents value the balance: ambition without anxiety, stretch without spectacle. Several families relocate to Cornwall for lifestyle reasons and cite the school as part of that equation. There is a noticeable loyalty – alumni parents, long-standing staff – which reinforces the sense of continuity. Girls appear comfortable being young here. That, more than any statistic, may be the defining feature.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Families seeking a smaller, academically credible girls’ school with strong creative provision and a grounded boarding option. Parents keen for their daughters to grow in confidence without the white heat of league-table culture.

Not for: Those wanting very large year groups, anonymity, or an overtly competitive academic environment.
