The <a href="https://stivestowncouncil-cornwall.gov.uk/civic_events/st-ives-feast-day-celebrations/">St Ives Feast and Hurling</a> (5 Feb) is an ancient tradition celebrating the anniversary of the consecration of the Parish Church of St Eia in 1434 AD and is celebrated by St Ives with several traditions, including the&nbsp;St Ives Well procession and one of three remaining games of hurling (a sort of ancient game of rugby) a silver ball.&nbsp;The winner is the person that returns the ball to the mayor on the steps of St Ives Guildhall on the stroke of midday and receives a silver coin for their efforts. Find a spot in the town to watch the&nbsp;festivities which can include people diving into the water to retain the silver ball as well as traditional Cornish guisers dancing from pub to pub.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wellbeing-and-outside">WELLBEING AND OUTSIDE</h2>

It’s snowdrops in abundance over at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pencarrow.co.uk/news-and-events/">Pencarrow House</a>, Wadebridge with the white bloomer springing up across the site’s fifty acres. This Georgian pile is the family home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns and ahead of the season opening properly in April, don&#8217;t miss their annual charity Snowdrop Weekend&nbsp;(10 – 11 Feb).



If the parkruns at various locations across Cornwall on Saturday mornings isn&#8217;t enough, for a longer challenge try the <a href="https://runabc.co.uk/newquay-10k">Newquay 10km</a> (4 Feb) &#8211; the second grand-prix event of 2024 is a 10K road race – undulating with one proper Cornish hill to climb, but generally quite a fast course.



Back for 2024, the <a href="https://www.timeoutdoors.com/events/cardinham-half-marathon">Cardinham Half Marathon</a> (24 Feb) is a challenging, timed, out &amp; back loop through the woodland near Bodmin that has no cut off time so perfect for first timers. Medal for all finishers. Awards for top finishers. Canicross entries welcome. And then the <a href="https://cornwallairambulancetrust.org/challenges/running/looe-10-miler/">Looe 10-miler</a> (25 Feb) is a Cornwall Air Ambulance fundraiser taking in an undulating course through West Looe includinging the coastal road to Talland and incorporates three climbs and a steep de



Sleep underneath the stars of Bodmin Moor at a <a href="https://www.cabillacornwall.com/dirty-weekend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dirty Weekend Retreat</a> at Cabilla in a Koyt cabin and spend your days getting down and dirty, Cabilla style. That means getting in touch with your natural selves: roll up your sleeves and plant trees as part of a temperate rainforest expansion project, experience guided rainforest walks to learn about soil health and species reintroduction, plus you’ll meet the beavers, Sigourney and Jean-Claude. And when you’re finished getting dirty, discover the calming bliss of a sound bath, yoga classes and the Woodland Sauna to help you relax. You’ll also receive three nourishing meals a day, cooked by private chefs, and spend evenings around the fire drinking hot chocolate and wine, while listening to live music. (16 &#8211; 18 Feb / 23 -25 Feb).



Each year join the gardeners to <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/cornwall-spring-story-magnolia-great-gardens/">monitor the magnolias bursting into bloom heralding the oncoming of spring</a>. In 2022 and 2023, this happened in the last couple of weeks of Feb; who knows what all this wet and stormy weather will mean for 2024.

It’s not too late to view <a href="https://www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com/fowey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kurt Jackson – The Fowey</a> at the Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just, showing until 24 Feb 2024 (above). Focusing on another of Cornwall’s iconic watercourses, this time the river Fowey, this exhibition by legendary landscape artist, Kurt Jackson, at the Muddy Award winning gallery, traces the water from roots on Bodmin Moor down to the deep sea harbour at the town itself. Free.



The UK’s first large-scale exhibition of work by Finland born artist Outi Pieski opens at the Tate St Ives (10 Feb – 6 May) and will include figurative landscapes, photographs and prints alongside sculptural works and a new installation created especially during a residency at Porthmeor Studios in January 2024. Pieski is a Sámi visual artist whose practice is deeply connected to land. Working primarily with painting and installation, Pieski has gained recognition for her work which explores the spiritual relationship between humans and their environment and raises vital questions around traditional knowledge and Indigenous people’s rights. The exhibition at Tate St Ives will present Pieski’s figurative landscapes, photographs and prints alongside sculptural works.

In Penzance, check out&nbsp;<a href="https://newlynartgallery.co.uk/activities/storm-warning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Storm Warning</a>, a collaboration between Newlyn Art Gallery &amp; The Exchange, and Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea, which seeks to raise awareness of the impact of the climate crisis on coastal communities in Mount’s Bay, and South Essex (until&nbsp;April 2024).



Falmouth Art Gallery is showing <a href="https://www.falmouthartgallery.com/Exhibitions/2024/1898~Chosen_Terrain">Chosen Terrain</a>, featuring new abstract paintings by Cornwall-based artists Neil Canning and Mark Surridge, who have been taking walks together for over 20 years, giving them both a unique platform for sharing their views on art and the changing landscape. Airing their concerns about the environment and climate change, filmmaker Rachael Jones joined their walks and the dialogue and presents her own perspective in a new film commissioned for the exhibition.  Rachael has also worked alongside, Splanna, the gallery’s Earth Justice Art Youth Group, on their first film which was created during a recent residency at Loveland (ends 13 April).   



Catch The Cornish Paintings of Martina Thomas at Penlee House in Penzance. In celebration of the centenary year of the artist’s birth and to mark her dedication to painting the landscapes, harbours and fishermen of Cornwall, Martina Thomas’s family have <a href="https://penleehouse.org.uk/exhibition/the-cornish-paintings-of-martina-thomas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chosen a selection of her Cornish artworks and rarely-exhibited examples of her later work</a> (ends 20 April).

Over at Hall for Cornwall, there’s a fine line-up of men including Adam Kay: <a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/whats-on/adam-kay-undoctored/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Undoctored</a>, 3 Feb, and Ross Noble – <a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/whats-on/ross-noble-jibber-jabber-jamboree/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jibber Jabber Jamboree</a>, 17 Feb.



Also at Hall for Cornwall, there&#8217;s <a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/whats-on/swan-lake/">Swan Lake</a>, 13 &amp; 14 Feb, and <a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/whats-on/rsc-first-encounters-romeo-juliet//">RSC First Encounters &#8211; Romeo &amp; Juliet</a>, 23 &amp; 24 Feb, which your teen will love.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foodie">FOODIE</h2>



It&#8217;s the last of the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gralefritrestaurant/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gralefrit</a> pop-up suppers&#8230; Fitzroy will be returning for the summer season but head chef Ethan is moving on to new things. Still tables for 16 Feb. Over at Una St Ives, there&#8217;s an interesting sounding <a href="https://unastives.co.uk/una_events/fermentation-workshop/">Fermentation Workshop</a> in collab with Newyln Fermentary on 10 Feb where you can learn to make your own lacto-fermented foods, then enjoy a bespoke fermentation inspired menu (and then head to the spa!). Kota Kai also re-launches in mid-Feb.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-family">FAMILY</h2>



Half-term is this month so you&#8217;ll be wanting our dedicated guide (12 &#8211; 19 Feb) but outside of those dates there&#8217;s still family fun to be had.

Cornwall’s biggest outdoor ice-rink in the grounds of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.edenproject.com/visit/whats-here/ice-skating" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eden Project</a>, comes to an end this month &#8211; pre-booking online is essential, and you’ll need a locals pass or to pay to access Eden itself too (dates until 18 Feb online, then more may be released).

Find out all about Cornwall’s tin mining past in the new Tolgus Mill interactive exhibition at <a href="https://www.cornwall-gold.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornwall Gold</a>, Redruth, and then try panning for gold yourself. Little ones will enjoy the dress-up section to become a Tin Miller or a Bal Maiden, and be fascinated as the Tolgus Tin Streaming Mill smashes rock into tiny pieces, removing the tin ore from the stone, and then employs a host of inventions to separate the valuable tin.
