The Herringbone, Mousehole

Mousehole was famously named ‘the prettiest village in England’ by Dylan Thomas and it’s a firm Muddy favourite. This stylishly rustic harbourside cottage – a former net loft – is the perfect romantic bolthole from which to explore it. Cladded walls, white washed floorboards and serene neutral interiors are a refined take on coastal style. Stroll around the village, stop into the many galleries and definitely book a table for dinner at The Old Coastguard.

The light-filled open plan living space is really stylish and sociable, which makes it great for groups or families. Trethvor, Fistral Beach, Newquay (Sleeps 7)

Perched above one of Cornwall’s most popular surf beaches and a walk (at low tide) from Crantock, another corker, Trethvor is perfectly placed for beach adventures. It’s a light and airy, villa-style property arranged over three floors, with a wrap-around terrace and spectacular sea views. The modern coastal interiors create a laidback feel and in addition to all the mod cons, there’s a telescope, so guests can even enjoy the view by night. Popular gastropub The Lewinnick Lodge is a walk away as is Rick Stein’s Restaurant, for some seriously good fish and chips.

Sally Port Cottage at St Anthony’s Lighthouse (Sleeps 4)

For a proper edge-of-the-world escape, you can’t beat a lighthouse and this one is situated at the most southerly point of the Roseland Peninsula. The accommodation couldn’t be more private, reached via a steep path leading down to the rocks from the headland and car park (worth considering when you’re packing). There is an observation room with large windows that are perfect for watching the waves and two cosy bedrooms, complete with ear plugs for occasions when the fog warning sounds. And if you fancy rejoining society at any point, the gorgeous villages of St Mawes and Portscatho are a short drive away.
