THE LOWDOWN

A grade II listed, 18th century Victorian-Gothic hotel, The Alverton has ivy-covered walls, arched windows and its own bell tower, set in impressively leafy grounds on the edge of Truro, Cornwall’s capital city. Inside, behind the old oak doors, the elegant original features combine with modern luxury and contemporary styling to create Truro’s only four star hotel.

With 53 bedrooms, restaurant and bar, the sweeping drive up from the road into the city centre is extremely inviting. The building itself has an interesting history – including serving as a convent for nuns – and was only converted into a hotel in the mid 1980s. Fun fact, the Great Hall function room – once the nuns’ chapel – shares an architect with the city’s Cathedral.

The Alverton’s most recent renovation took place in 2016 with the creation of 15 rooms in the luxurious courtyard development. The rooms in the main building retain a more traditional feel. Here expect more urban chic, like a freestanding copper bathtub under the high A-shaped roof and stained glass window with copper lights.

THE VIBE

A hidden gem, really; inside The Alverton it feels grown up and comfortable, with discreet service should you wish. It is not quite Downton, so no butlers appearing at every elbow, but it is still extremely pleasant. The grounds give it a countryside vibe, yet you’re just a few moments walk from Truro’s town centre. Shops, theatre, the cinema and more are all very easily accessible.

SCOFF AND QUAFF

Head chef Ollie Wyatt heads up the restaurant which is relatively formal but not stuffy. Our fellow diners included couples on a mini-break, older guests enjoying the delights of Cornwall, as well as those quite clearly on a date. It is also a popular location for a working stay, with several solo diners too.

The award-winning menu changes seasonally to showcase the best of the south west, and also to reflect dining trends. We enjoyed local mackerel sashimi, venison carpaccio and an autumnal squash salad. Also on offer were elaborate seasonal mains through to bar classics. There is plenty of choice and all dietary and allergy requests are well catered for. The wine list is bijou; my glass of Sea Change Sauvignon Blanc went well.

Afterwards we headed to the bar under the care of Bar Manager Simon Willis. Although it was October, it was mild, so didn’t yet have the roaring log fire lit. It was however decorated with plenty of seasonal gourdes, and just the right place for an after dinner espresso and a cocktail from the autumn cocktail list.

PILLOW TALK

The 53 rooms at The Alverton are all individually designed. To impress your guest, book The Bishop Suite, in the main house. More traditional in design and styling, it is a luxurious indulgence. Check out the side by side freestanding bathtubs in the adjoining huge bathroom (definitely pack your fanciest bath salts).

This time round, we were in an Executive Suite just down the hall which while less ‘wow’ factor was also extremely comfortable and practical. The bath was a more ordinary tub with shower over, but it also had a separate little room with sofa, TV and desk, so it was perfect for combining a luxe stay with a little work.

The Alverton collabs with local organic toiletries Bloom Remedies, plus there were two sinks, and the usual white towelling robes and slippers. The bed was huge and comfortable and there was loads of natural light from the leaded windows. Basic tea and coffee facilities are available in the room, plus a Nespresso machine, and fresh milk is delivered to the room on request. Splash out, if you like, on a £30 arrival club where you will get a cream tea and welcome drink delivered to your room on arrival.

OUT AND ABOUT

Truro Cathedral and rooftops — Truro Cathedral

Truro is Cornwall’s capital city and one of our picks for the best places to live, so there’s plenty to recommend, and The Alverton makes a great base for exploring. The cathedral, in gothic revival style, was completed in 1910 and is visible from most of the town. Don’t miss the current Luke Jerram Mars: War and Peace installation.

Hall for Cornwall offers all sorts of musicals and shows, including visiting West End performances, theatre and comedy, plus a Christmas panto. Truro has plenty of excellent restaurants and galleries to while away time. Try Muddy Award winning Petty Fours or Muddy Award winning deli, Sabzi. Truro Food Festival and find weekend markets at Lemon Street and Lemon Quay (above).

On River Street the Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery (formerly Royal Cornwall Museum) reopened earlier in 2025 after a £2 million revamp. It is now home to new galleries and a much more exciting interactive offering for younger visitors. There is also an art deco cinema and music venue down by the old quay on the river.

Outside the city you’ll want to head over to the Roseland peninsular, with beaches and walking and other gems, like Simon Stallard’s Hidden Hut. The National Trust gardens and house at Trelissick (below) is worth a visit. Hop on the King Harry Ferry and onto St Mawes where you’ll find more beautiful beaches.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Grown up and tasteful, The Alverton makes a great city break. Think of Cornwall, and you often think of the coast, but inland is underrated, particularly in autumn and winter. Truro has some excellent cultural goings on, as well as the best of the shopping.

Good for: Grown up city breaks in a well placed central location for the town, or exploring Cornwall further.

Not for: With an intriguing history and monastery feel, this is a real grown ups hotel, so if you’ve a young family you might prefer something else. Although do note children are welcome and can be accommodated by way of extra beds in several of the rooms. Modernists might find the bedrooms a little traditional.
