On Cornwall’s wild north Atlantic coast ancient mythical magical villages hug the shore. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Bossiney is quiet and unspoilt, a tiny hamlet between Tintagel and Boscastle. With easy access to the rest of North Cornwall including the South West Coast Path, quiet coves and breath-taking views, as well as the dramatic Rocky Valley and stunning waterfall at St Nectan’s Glen, it is a quiet and peaceful location, home to Ocean Cove, a development of privately-owned holiday homes in Tintagel.

On offer for holiday rentals and sleeping six, Bossiney Cabin is a self-catering property at Ocean Cove, set slightly away from the holiday homes at the entrance to the park. With a raised outdoor terrace with beautiful sea views, and a Yurt outside with sitting area and play space, Bossiney Cabin makes the most of this stunning location with outstanding and dramatic coastal views.

THE VIBE

Calm and cosy, with a lovely muted palette of blues and full of Cornish touches – from the iconic blue striped Cornishware to the artwork that fills the walls, Bossiney Cabin is perfect for unwinding. The single level cabin is laid-back and welcoming, and while you’ll need to arrange a food delivery, or eat out locally, everything else you could need from towels to boardgames is ready and waiting for you. There’s even a french market basket for your groceries (pro tip, head to Boscastle Farm Shop).

The cabin is well thought out, with a main bathroom plus an en-suite to the master bedroom, and has a massive porch with plenty of hooks for your outdoor gear, plus an outside shower to wash off sand and mud. The kitchen leads out onto the sea-view deck, and the garden is all fenced in, so kids and dogs can play safely.

SCOFF & QUAFF

Proper self-catering here, there’s not even a restaurant on site, so the vibe is quiet. The table seats six, and the kitchen has everything you’ll need for cooking – an oven inside, and a BBQ out on the deck – plus coffee machine, dishwasher (and laundry, should you need it). It wasn’t quite warm enough in March when we stayed to eat outside, but when the weather is good, the deck looks super appealing and the door is right off the kitchen for easy access.

Should you not fancy cooking, there’s a number of options locally, from Tintagel Brewery Bar & Bistro (shortlisted for a Trencherman’s Award too) who do a fab Sunday carvery, The Rocket Store, Boscastle for elevated small plates and locally caught seafood if you’re feeling flush, and Boscastle Farm Shop if you’re feeling more like a large portion to yourself. The Port William at nearby Trebarwith Strand has excellent views for a sundowner, and there’s all manner of little cafés, bakeries and more pubs in Tintagel.

Three decent bedrooms to choose from, all with plump white pillows and duvets, one of which has an en-suite, and one that has bunkbeds. Plenty of cupboard space should you be the kind of guest who likes that sort of thing; you’ll find it a bit compact if you want to live out of your suitcase.

Not a spa as such, but all visitors have access to the recently refurbished indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym, and lounge, which are otherwise owners-only (not open to the public). On the weekend of our visit we had the pool almost entirely to ourselves, much to the delight of the children. We brought our own floats and sinkies – note there is no lifeguard.

KID-FRIENDLY

In a word, yes! My kids loved their stay – from the boardgames and books left in their room to the yurt in the garden which they spent many hours playing in, they were delighted. They were also pleased there was a pool on site – the nearest beach at Bossiney is a little bit of a climb back up and down – and Trebarwith just down the coast is beautiful but only accessible a couple of hours either side of low tide, so a pool open the entire day meant they could be sure of a swim.

Lots to do nearby – Bossiney is on the South West Coast Path. Head north towards Boscastle, or south towards Tintagel and you’ll get a great walk either way (Tintagel is closer, if that helps!). Keep an eye on the Facebook page for Jolly Good Singing, who organise regular community folk singing events on the beach at Bossiney in the cave.

In land is the awesome waterfall at St Nectan’s Glen and there’s the world famous Tintagel Castle where you can immerse yourself in history, myths and stunning scenery. Inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur, for centuries this dramatic castle and coastline has fired the imaginations of writers, artists and even the brother of a king. (Pro-tip, join Cornwall Heritage Trust and in addition to their own sites you also get free entry to all Cornwall’s sites run by English Heritage which includes Tintagel Castle). You can also spot Gallos, the 8-foot-tall ghostly male figured bronze sculpture that is on the cliff at the castle.

Want more King Arthur? Head to Slaughter Bridge where you’ll find The Vale of Avalon, part of King Arthur’s Cornwall Discovery Trail (which includes Tintagel (Castel Dyntagell), Dozmary Pool – on Bodmin Moor -, King Arthur’s Great Halls – in Tintagel – and St Nectan’s Glen.

National Trust member? Don’t miss The Old Post Office in Tintagel, a medieval cottage with a lovely peaceful garden.

DOG FRIENDLY?

Yes, and not just tolerated. A dog bed and bowls are provided, and the garden is enclosed.

ACCESSIBILITY

All on one level and within easy walk of the parking.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: A fabulously low-key option for those who want to get away from it all – Bossiney is super quiet and the adjoining Ocean Cove has no bar or entertainment to disturb. Families and those with dogs who are looking for a self-contained garden, with space to just ‘be’ will love it.

Not for: The sea view is rugged and inspires walking, which you’ll need to do to reach the local beach, so if your idea of a sea view is white sand you can roll out of bed onto, with a bar nearby, this might be a bit rural for you, and you’ll need to either organise a food delivery, or drive to reach a restaurant or pub.

The damage: Seven nights from £1400 in low season.
