Five Bubbles & A Whizzy New Facial
Shed your winter skin with a Biotec Facial and much-needed pamper at the gorgeous Headland Spa
Every time I visit the Headland Hotel I feel increasingly that I’d just like to move in. There’s the charming man who welcomes you at the door, the panoramic surf-side view, the cosy corners and crackling fire places. And now I’ve discovered the gorgeous spa, they really won’t see the back of me.
The Headland Spa, which opened in 2013, is one of three Five Bubble spas in Cornwall and I can’t for the life of me work out why I haven’t been before. Despite being part of one of Cornwall’s most iconic hotels, it remains fairly undiscovered.
Located just downstairs from the hotel’s main entrance hall, the spa’s elegant, light-filled reception and lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to sea, buckets of Champagne at every turn and calming natural interiors.
There are six relaxing, low-lit treatment rooms – two doubles, for friends or couples – each with its own shower and sound system. If spa music rubs you up the wrong way, you are welcome to bring your own. There’s also a cosy relaxation room, where you can curl up with a cup of herbal tea or have a doze post treatment, a luxe mani/pedi suite and private Rhassoul steam room. Slather cleansing Rhassoul muds and clays on to your face and body and steam away!
In the ‘leisure area’ you’ll find an atmospheric hydropool with bubble seats, Cornish salt steam room, Swedish sauna, hot tub and four aromatherapy showers.
The spa lounge has its own special menu of light and healthy options, such as sharing boards, salads and sandwiches. But they’ll bring you the full Headland high tea if you ask nicely too. You know which way I’m leaning…
The Biotec ‘Skin Resurfacer’ Facial
(Targets – blemish marks, uneven skin tone & fine lines)
The Headland Spa uses Elemis products – in fact Spa Manager Amy, who did my treatment, used to work for the brand and is an Elemis pro, with encyclopaedic knowledge of the science behind their products and treatments. The Biotec facial is brand new to The Headland Spa but was launched by Elemis about a year ago and they’ve seen amazing results. As an introductory offer, you can upgrade to a Biotech facial at the spa, for £10 throughout March.
The treatment began with a consultation to find out which of the five Biotec technologies would most benefit my skin. With my congested pores and patchy redness, Amy recommended the ‘skin resurfacer’, which included ‘ultrasonic peeling’, to remove dead skin cells and ‘light therapy’ to reduce redness.
The treatment combined the traditional, hands-on steps – cleansers, hot flannels, masks and a gentle head massage – with the two whizzy Biotec therapies. They sound harsh, especially the ‘peeling’ bit but they’re actually very gentle. Biotech only targets the first three layers of skin, so although they are very effective, they won’t leave your skin red and raw for the rest of the day.
It was a slightly different experience to a classic facial, because there was a subtle whir of machinery during the Biotec steps but this facial is all about results and I definitely saw them.
Straight after my facial my skin felt really calm, fresh and tingly (in a good way) but the next day, I really noticed the difference. The bumpy spots on my forehead had almost completely disappeared and my skin tone was less red and much more even. Long may the healthy glow last!
Headland Spa Days
Few things are as uplifting as some time carved out for yourself at the spa and at The Headland, it doesn’t have to break the bank. If you just want to use the facilities (a treat in itself), it’s £15 during the week and £20 at weekends. Come in the evening, and for £20 they’ll throw in a glass of fizz. Packages with treatments start from £79 and if you spend over £60 on treatments, you get free use of the spa facilities for up to two hours. Hotel guests also have free use of all the spa facilities.
Coming in 2019
The Headland has recently revealed plans for a brand new indoor and outdoor leisure pool complex, which look like being an amazing facility for guests and locals. Take a virtual tour here.
