Think of North Cornwall and chances are it’s the wild landscapes and quaint fishing villages that spring to mind? Padstow, probably. North Cornwall is so much more than that. Pretty much everywhere in Cornwall has its own beauty but there’s no denying that the most popular destinations can also offer crowds and uninspiring restaurants and accommodation. The key isn’t so much location as knowing how to find the gems – as even the most touristy places have them, so here’s the Muddy insider foodie guide to North Cornwall from someone who actually lives – and eats – here.

*NB. North Cornwall stretches from Bude down the coast to Newquay and as far inland as roughly the A30 – we’ll pick up the next stretch of coastline in our next guide. These are our stand-out highlights, not to miss names, and hidden gems, rather than an exhaustive list.

HEADLINERS, STARS & BIG NAMES

Once upon a time, two-Michelin starred Restaurant Nathan Outlaw and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall were the go-to places for high end tasting menus but once those both closed there was a bit of a gap.

Michelin Star Restaurants in Cornwall

Pleasingly for those with a wallet to match their waist-band, there are now a handful of excellent fine dining restaurants in North Cornwall worth checking out, including of course, Nathan Outlaw’s ventures – Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen, at the harbour in Port Isaac, with one star, for a five or seven course set menu where fish is front and centre. Outlaw’s Bistro is over the road from the now closed New Road, where the same quality of cooking is served more casually à la carte for lunch and dinner.

Also with one star is Paul Ainsworth at No6 in Padstow, offering both two tasting menu options as well as a two or three course à la carte choice, bringing Cornish ingredients and surprising treats. In Newquay at the Headland Hotel, Adam Handling’s Ugly Butterfly 2.0 in it’s new home overlooking the Cribbar and Fistral from the north headland. Two tasting menus are on offer here – a four course, or truly decadent eleven course feast.

Fine dining in North Cornwall

It was Rick Stein of course who put Padstow on the foodie map all those years ago, 50 to be precise, opening the iconic Seafood Restaurant back in 1975, and it is still going strong – think white tablecloths and Dover sole meunière, and turbot with hollandaise paired with Rick’s own label white burgundy under huge original art works. Or, choose his newer, French-style St Petroc’s Bistro and for an even more laid-back, travel inspired menu, Rick Stein’s Café.

In land towards Bodmin, at Nanstallon, Fern by Paul Welburn opened in October 2025, bringing Paul’s Michelin star experience from Oxford to Cornwall, featuring flavour driven small and large plates of refined dishes but in a relaxed style.

INSIDER PICKS & TIPS – WHERE TO EAT IN NORTH CORNWALL

And now for the real gems! This whistle stop tour around north Cornwall takes in the restaurants, bakeries, wine shops, pasty places, pubs and burger bars in north Cornwall that the locals love.

BUDE

The queue for Scandi-inspired Electric Bakery, for pastries, donuts, bread and other baked goods from Wednesday to Sunday is legendary. Another favourite is Temple. If you can’t get a seat in the restaurant downstairs, try the wine bar and small plates, Temple Up Top, which, you’ve guessed it, is upstairs. Pubs wise, Muddy Award winning The Barrel is a tiny pub with a big personality, and recently under new ownership. Head to North Coast Wine Bar for a cocktail.

BOSCASTLE & TINTAGEL

Bringing French-style long lunch and good time vibes to the harbour is The Rocket Store, a tiny seafood restaurant where the fish comes straight off the day boat, the meat from their farm just above the village, and the legendary chickpea dish might be my favourite ever. The wine list is distinctive and perfect for the setting. Just up the road is Muddy Award winning Boscastle Farmshop, and the locals love a drink at The Cobweb, a roast at The Wellington, and a pint with a view at The Port William at Trebarwith Strand.

LAUNCESTON & SURROUNDS

On a unremarkable industrial estate just off the A30 at Launceston is Philip Warren butchers where those in the know stop for a bacon and sausage bap to fuel their up country drives. The family-owned butchers supply their grass-fed meat to many London and local restaurants – which includes a branch of Native Burger (see below). At nearby Altartun, The Rising Sun is a locals favourite.

For a full-on farm to table foodie experience, head straight to Coombeshead Farm at Lewannick. It was Cornwall’s OG farmhouse table dining experience, although things have evolved somewhat since Tom and Lottie first opened their doors over a decade ago. During the summer, lunch and dinner is served in the restaurant, where everyone eats the same menu – meat raised on the farm (Mangalitza pork a speciality, now also ducks) with vegetable and salads from the gardens and grown on the 66 acres of mixed perennial pastures, meadow and woodland. Rooms are available in the main farmhouse and the newer Granary, and Coombeshead sourdough under the care of baker Ben, made with their own flour, is legendary across the Duchy and beyond. The farm shop is also open at weekends.

PORT ISAAC & PORT GAVERNE

Port Isaac is more than Outlaw and people in search of a Doc Martin sighting. Fresh from the Sea has great seafood to go, or in their café, but those in the know head for George Cleave‘s industrial fish unit, open to trade and retail, and where he’ll be serving up hot seafood this summer from his new van. Down in the harbour, and definitely a relation, is Cleave’s Café, and nearby at St Endellion, Trevathan Farmshop has the best strawberries. The roasts at Port Gaverne Hotel are excellent, and Pilchard’s is a fun seasonal addition. Locals love The Golden Lion.

ST KEW & ST TUDY

The St Kew Inn comes into its own in summer with beautiful riverside garden but it is also super cosy in winter, serving elevated pub dining and epic roasts. Over towards the A39 at St Kew Highway is St Kew Farmshop, serving Yallah coffee, all sorts of sweet treats, plus an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, and occasional evening pop-ups. Heading further inland, the St Tudy Inn made its gastropub name when chef Emily Scott was in charge, and it is now owned by Project Cornwall.

BODMIN

Bodmin is famous for many things – the beast, the moor, the jail – but it wasn’t really on the foodie map until Native Burger landed. Tucked away just across the road from the Hole in the Wall pub, this little gem is a delight, and not just because it won best casual dining at both the Cornwall and national Muddy Awards last year. The meat is from the aforementioned Philip Warren and ice-cream by fellow Bodmin locals, Kelly’s.

WADEBRIDGE

Although some might say that Wadebridge sits in the foodie shadow of nearby Padstow, or Rock, there are plenty of lovely options in the town. The Tiny Thai serves authentic modern Thai street food, and the Salt Box street food complex is fun. For cocktails, basque cheesecake, or their new bottomless brunch, head to Muddy Award winning Plonk’d.

Cheese at Wadebridge, from the award-winning makers of Padstow Ele, is a great new addition, as is Duchy Larder. The best food in Wadebridge though is not found in any restaurant, but a private kitchen on an industrial estate, where Josh & Georgie host regular supper clubs and chefs tables at Kaloura’s Kitchen. Conveniently as they are BYO, there is an excellent wine bar / shop right next door.

POLZEATH

The reinvented version of Surfside is a bit more tame than the vaunted OG, but with chef Andi Tuck back behind the coals, the restaurant and rum bar on the sand at Polzeath is a fun night out, and the sunsets legendary. Over at Baby Bay, Taco Boys proved the concept (how we miss them) and now Baby Bay Beach Club host next level feasts. At Tubestation, private chef Prim’s pop-up lunches during half-terms and holidays are beautiful, but get there early as they sell out.

The Mowhay at Trebetherick and the new café at Highcliffe are insider picks, and everyone needs Vanilla ice cream. Sundowners at The Atlantic, TJ’s, The Oystercatcher, or the Waterfront all give good views, but bringing your own onto the beach can’t be beaten (just take it away with you again after, or you can answer to the beach ranger).

ROCK

There’s plenty of love for Paul Ainsworth’s The Mariners pub but my first choice is always Four Boys. Just above the lifeboat station, with gorgeous estuary views, the food is excellent, as is the wine, but it is the generous but gentle feeling of being welcome that keeps me coming back. Many course tasting menu, often in partnership with someone interesting? Yes, they’ve plenty. Want a simple glass of Chablis and some fries and salad in the sunshine after an afternoon on the water. Yes, you can have that too in the new bar and terrace.

Also worth checking out in Rock is Fat Pepper Co at Bluntrock Brewery. Josh Oram serves fab burgers in the taproom garden where Hugo and George create their beers. Other local favourites includes The Dining Room, Fee’s deli & café, where they run regular supper clubs as well as lush lunches, the sailing club bar, and once team Ainsworth have finished renovating it, the St Enodoc Hotel.

PADSTOW & SURROUNDS

Plenty going on in Padstow but my first stop is always the bothy at Prideaux Walled Garden for cake and a cup of tea brewed from the flowers grown on site. Head back down the steps from the garden to Duke Street, where you’ll find Prawn on the Lawn, Sabzi Deli, and lots of places selling gin. Over by the harbour newcomer PL28 is top of my new places to visit, and if you can secure a ticket to one of Ross Geach‘s feasts at Padstow Kitchen Garden you are winning. For drinks, head to Ruby’s or CiCi’s cocktail bar.

Just outside of Padstow is Cornish winery Trevibban Mill, with Barnaby’s restaurant doing a great job of giving south of France vibes. Trevear Farm host excellent events, and have a regular Native Burger pop-up.

HARLYN

Tucked above one of North Cornwall’s prettiest bays, is THE PIG at Harlyn Bay. The laid-back luxe bolthole has well and truly shaken off its “new kid on the block” status and settled in. The kitchen garden dictates the menu, and The Scullery serves up hearty, unfussy dishes with serious provenance. Expect wood panelling, roaring fires in cooler months and tables cleverly spaced so you feel like you’re dining at a very well-heeled friend’s country pile. For sunnier days, The Lobster Shed – set in wildflower meadows with knockout views across Harlyn Bay – is peak Cornish summer: chilled rosé, local fizz, just-landed lobster and sunsets that do all the talking.

Down nearer the beach, Bar Harlyn makes a fun evening out, with regular bands and new drinks.

MAWGAN PORTH, WATERGATE BAY & PORTH

Heading down the coast towards Newquay are several places worth a stop. First, Mawgan Porth, where the twin hotels of Scarlet and Bedruthan have glorious views, and fab spas. How to choose? Whether you’ve kids with you, as Scarlet is adults only. At Watergate Bay you’ll find Zacry‘s beachside restaurant, open for dinner only – again with amazing sweeping beach views, and a great place to watch the surfers. At Porth, R.Place is mainly a clothes shop, but hosts some fun foodie pop-ups and is worth watching out for on social.

NEWQUAY & SURROUNDS

Newquay is a big place and fast becoming a foodie destination of it’s own, so really deserves a stand-alone write-up, so these really are the headlines and barely scratch the surface. The best places are fun and don’t take themselves too seriously – like Rem’s Café, and Naughty Nonnas pop-up suppers. We also eagerly await Adam Banks’ announcement as to his next venture – his winter pop-ups in Padstow have left us wanting more.

Restaurants in Newquay

Counter Culture, helmed by Ben Harrison was awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2026. Choose between an intimate small plates dining room, an informal counter serving daily-changing pintxos inspired by Spanish counter culture, or a relaxed walk-in terrace for drinks and light bites. Little Ears pasta, Herd burger, and Ralph’s diner are all on Fore Street, and Rosa’s, next to the little crazy golf course, is another fun choice. In the town itself is The Clover Club, and Pachanga, and newbies Robo are by the station. Pavilion has the best baguettes in town, and their peanut butter is also excellent. Over at South Fistral, the Dune Restaurant has 2 AA Rosettes. Gordon Ramsey has regularly eaten in and highly lauded the Fish House restaurant just above Fistral Beach, where you’ll also find Rick Stein’s Newquay restaurant, and the newly renamed Boardmasters bar.

Bar wise, of course there is plenty going on. Ginger & Joe, Project 83, Tom Thumb and Wasted Grapes all make for a good night out, and nearby Nansledan also has Jackson’s Wine Bar, along with another branch of Sabzi, and Ladyvale Bakery for lush cakes.

Just in land from Newquay, pubs The Pheasant at St Newlyn East, and The Tartan Fox at Summercourt are both worth travelling for, both delivering some of the best food. Locals also love dining with the view from the Lewinnick Lodge, and the roasts at The Plume of Feathers at Mitchell. And Gorse Bakery at Lanteague makes excellent bread, my favourite is the sesame loaf, as well as interesting pastries. Just get there early, and check socials that it is a bread making day as some aren’t.

MUDDY PICK – BEST OF THE CORNISH BEST, NORTH CORNWALL

CORNISH PASTY

Once I would have said Aunt Avice’s at St Kew Highway, but she has folded up her aprons for retirement, so for locally-made it has to be everyone’s favourite red checkered takeaway – Barnecutts. Find their flagship shop and café at Wadebridge, and their newest branch at Padstow. Even better, although they arrive from the south coast, are Ann’s Pasties bought at Trevathan Farm Shop, St Endellion.

CORNISH CREAM TEA

Carnewas Tea Room, Bedruthan Steps is a traditional National Trust tea room at the start (or end) of the stunning Bedruthan Steps walk. Distinctly low-fi, it serves up scones and jam to rival any fancy hotel. This big claim is firmly backed up by the gushing cream tea reviews on their Facebook page – if it is a sunny day, the sheltered tea garden is a delight (this is basically the view!)
