Where to pick your own pumpkins

Big 'uns, little 'uns, warty ones and pale ghostly ones. Here's Muddy's pick of the pumpkin patches for your witches and wizards to get carving.

Good gourd! Is it time to trot out my dreadful pumpkin puns and moth-eaten witch’s hat already?

As if this year hasn’t bought enough horrors already, Halloween is nearly upon us and with it my trusty round-up of where to pick yer pumpkins. Some you have to pre-book your slot, so do check the websites before you go.

Trevathan Farm, St Endellion, Nr Port Isaac (opens 9 Oct)

The pick your own pumpkin field (above) opens 9 October – no need to book, just head to the field to select your own. Plus farm shop, restaurant and play area.

Trevaskis Farm, Connor Down, Nr Hayle (expected to open 10 Oct, tbc)

Look round the farm, pick your own pumpkin, visit the farm shop or have a dessert from the amazing selection in the restaurant.

Cornish Maize Maze, Saltash (17 & 18 Oct, 24 – 31 Oct)

Pumpkin patch with pumpkin picking, a short maze with a pumpkin quiz ideal for families with younger children. All the normal farm animals will be there! Pre-booked tickets only, £4 per person with under 3’s free, plus pay for your pumpkins (£1 small, £2.50 medium and £4 large).

Lobbs Farm Shop, Heligan (24 – 27 Oct)

The annual pumpkin fest is a little more stripped back this year for obvious reasons but pre-booked slots are available for £6 per child, to include a tractor and trailer ride to find the pumpkin of their choice to take home and carve (and you have lots to choose from!) and the return ride in the trailer. Mini tractors and wheelbarrows will be available to help the smaller children search out and carry their pumpkins. Also included is a hay bale photo.

Scaryland, Dairyland Farmworld, Nr Newquay (24 Oct – 1 Nov)

Scary fun on the Farm including visit the pumpkin patch, try pumpkin carving, creepy crafts and visit Witches Wood. Also find Dairyland regulars Pat-a-Pet and the newly refurbished milking of Clarabelle in the Haybarn. Booking essential, £8.95 per ticket.

Cedar Croft Nursery, St Tudy

Mark normally grows Christmas Trees but this year he has also branched out into pumpkins!

& just on the Cornwall / Devon border

Strawberry Fields, Lifton Farm Shop, Lifton, (24 Oct – 1 Nov)

For the full farm shop experience (and maybe a slap-up Sunday lunch), head to the multi-award winning family-run Strawberry Fields on the Devon/Cornwall border for their annual Pumpkin Fest. There are a few changes this year, including no carving, no tractor and trailer rides, no face painting and no scheduled magic shows as before but Magic Martin is there to sprinkle fairy dust over proceedings and takeaway fare is available from the Witches Cauldron. Booking essential, £2, maximum six people per group for a 60 minute time slot.
