<p>Autumn is the best time of year for so many reasons, with exciting new exhibitions, festivals and goings-on arriving at every turn. Oh yeah! Here are our picks – calendars at the ready.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>HISTORY</strong></h3>



<p>There’s heaps to explore across Cornwall at the&nbsp;<strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/" target="_blank">Heritage Open Days Festival</a></strong> (9 &#8211; 18 Sept)&nbsp;– a fantastic way to see our ‘hoods prettiest buildings and landmarks that are free to enter for the public. Highlights include&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting/event/st-lawrences-church16" target="_blank">St Lawrence’s Church</a>&nbsp;– a unique opportunity to explore Cornwall’s asylum church-inside and outside – you can even have a go at playing the organ and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting/event/gribbin-daymark3">Gribbin Daymark</a>, at Menabilly near Fowey, sounds pretty cool for views across Cornwall.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">FOODIE</h3>



<p>This year, the annual <strong>Mini Fish Festival</strong> festival will be run out of The Boathouse restaurant on the harbour at Newquay, and will be sponsored by Sharps (10 &#8211; 11 Sept). Down in Falmouth, Verdant Brewing Co&#8217;s <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://verdantbrewing.co/blogs/news/falmouth-beer-trail-2022-16-18-september" target="_blank">Falmouth Beer Trail 2022</a> </strong>(16 &#8211; 18 Sept) returns, where across 6 venues in Falmouth, 17 breweries will be showcasing 40+ beers. </p>



<p>In Truro, The Alverton&#8217;s annual <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-cornish-gin-drinks-festival-at-the-alverton-2022-tickets-251267617207?lang=en-gb&amp;locale=en_GB&amp;status=30&amp;view=listing" target="_blank">Cornish Gin and Drinks Festival</a> runs on 17 Sept. On the Isles of Scilly, Simon Stallard is the first ever chef collaboration at the <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.visitislesofscilly.com/experience/whats-on/taste-of-scilly-festival-15-25-sept-p3145373" target="_blank">Taste of Scilly food and drink festival</a> (15 &#8211; 25 Sept</strong>). He’ll be cooking Scillonian grown, reared, ocean-caught produce, over fire on secluded beaches of St. Mary’s, Tresco and St. Martins as part of the festival. Other events in the programme include the ‘Safari Supper’- a jet boat that whisks guests to a different island for each course, Farm Feasts and pop-up rum bars in secret locations, to name but a few.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ARTS and MUSIC</h3>



<p>Feeder, Kula Shaker and The Wurzels are among the bands taking to the stage at the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cornwallciderfestival.co.uk/" target="_blank"><strong>Little Orchard Cider &amp; Music Festival</strong></a> at Healeys Cyder Farm (8-11 Sept). With the summer rush of holidaymakers over, St Ives draws down art and music lovers from all over the country for a whole host of exhibitions and cultural events in the annual <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/stivesseptemberfestival" target="_blank">St Ives September Festival</a></strong> (10 &#8211; 24 Sept). Back for 2022,  and rounding out September and in October the first <strong><a href="https://porthlevenarts.com/">Porthleven Arts Festival</a></strong> (24 Sept &#8211; 2 Oct) last year was lots of fun- more than 60 events across the town including exhibitions, art, workshops, music, poetry and performance. It’s about community, about participation and, most importantly, about celebrating art in all its many and diverse forms. </p>

<p>On the more exhibition side of things, still on at the Tate St Ives until October is <strong>&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-st-ives/ad-minoliti" target="_blank">Ad Minoliti</a></strong>&#8216;s ongoing project&nbsp;<em>The Feminist School of Painting</em>, transforming part of the gallery space into an active classroom as well as a dual exhibition in the last room of the gallery considering the works of local St Ives artists <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-st-ives/wilhelmina-barns-graham-and-jonathan-michael-ray" target="_blank">Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Jonathan Michael Ray</a></strong>. Up in Rock, the Lemon Street Gallery&#8217;s new exhibition space is now showing <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://lemonstreetgallery.co.uk/exhibitions/scene-change-act-ii/" target="_blank">Scene Change: Act II</a></strong> until the end of the month.</p>



<p>Over in St Just, <strong>Kurt Jackson</strong>&#8216;s revisiting of the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com/helford/" target="_blank"><strong>Helford River</strong></a> has resulted in a compelling new exhibition, freshly hung in the beautiful gallery space. In Newquay, North Coast Asylum hosts &#8216;<strong><a href="https://www.northcoastasylum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Secret Garden</a></strong>&#8216;, featuring playful takes on classic still life by Frankie Thorp.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">LITERARY</h3>



<p>The<strong>&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ncornbookfest.org/" target="_blank">North Cornwall Book Festival</a></strong> in St Endellion (22 &#8211; 25 Sept) brings together readers and writers (and a few choice musicians) for a half term holiday of literature, narrative, craft, workshops and concerts in a site of outstanding beauty, between the holiday resort of Polzeath and the fishing community of Port Isaac. Authors include local favourites&nbsp;<a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/my-fave-places-patrick-gale-author-cornwall/">Patrick Gale</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncornbookfest.org/portfolio-item/14-00-liz-kessler/">Liz Kessler</a>, and national faces, including Kate Moss, Esther Freud and Susie Boyt.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">THEATRE and COMEDY</h3>



<p><strong>Hall for Cornwall</strong> has so much on that we can&#8217;t begin to list it all out here, but highlights include SIX The Musical (6-11 Sept), the Ocean Film Festival World Tour (22 Sept) and everyone&#8217;s favourite, Gary Barlow (27 Sept &#8211; 1 Oct). Also music, theatre, comedy and more &#8211; <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/playhouse-tickets-shows" target="_blank">check out the full listings here</a>. Meanwhile over at <strong>The Minack</strong>, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.minack.com/whats-on/pride-and-prejudice-sort" target="_blank">Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)</a> by Isobel McArthur after Jane Austen arrives direct from the West End (22 Sept &#8211; 6 Oct). A bold, contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, performed across <a href="https://www.minack.com/whats-on/tempest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trebah’s sub-tropical garden</a> also sounds intriguing (22-24 Sept). </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">OCTOBER</h2>



<p><strong>FOODIE</strong></p>



<p>Falmouth’s Events Square will again play host to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://falmouthoysterfestival.co.uk/" target="_blank"><strong>Falmouth Oyster Festival</strong></a>, one of Cornwall’s biggest and best loved specialist food events. The annual festivities celebrate the start of the oyster dredging season, the native Fal Oyster and the diversity of Cornish seafood, with four days of feasting, cooking demos, live music, food and craft stalls. (13 – 16 Oct).</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ARTS and MUSIC</h3>

<p>Running for five years, this illuminated bike parade in North Cornwall is so much fun. <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/WadebridgeBikeLights/" target="_blank">Bikelights</a></strong> in Bodmin (14 Oct), Wadebridge (15 Oct) and Bude (16 Oct) is the most enormous fun, not only do you get to create brilliant illuminated bikes, but you also get to go on an unforgettable bike ride in the dark with your family, surrounded by the most enchanting glittering lights and laughter. <p>Music wise, Devon-based duo <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://endelienta.org.uk/" target="_blank">Harbottle &amp; Jonas</a> </strong>play at St Endellion Church (22 Oct), billed as one of the most exciting acts on the UK folk circuit.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">LITERARY</h3>



<p>Featuring a dynamic line-up of authors, poets and storytellers, <strong><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.falmouthbookfestival.com/" target="_blank">Falmouth Book Festival</a></strong> is back for 2022 (17 &#8211; 23 Oct). It takes place throughout the town and sets out to celebrate books, sharing ideas, and bringing people together. Last year author Dawn French, who has been chancellor of Falmouth University since 2015, kicked off proceedings, this year&#8217;s line up still TBC.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">THEATRE and COMEDY</h3>



<p>Lots to choose from again in October including <strong>Ned Boulting &#8211; Retour De Ned</strong> (9 Oct) <strong>Henry Blofeld &#8211; My Dear Old Things</strong> (15 Oct) and <strong>Mark Thompson&#8217;s Spectacular Science Show</strong> (25 Oct) at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.comicalentertainment.com/book-tickets" target="_blank"><strong>Launceston Town Hall</strong></a>, plus something for everyone at <strong><a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hall for Cornwall</a></strong>. Our picks include <strong>Sir Runulph Fiennes</strong> (10 Oct) and <strong>The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel </strong>(11 &#8211; 15 Oct).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AND ONE TO KEEP AN EYE ON FOR WINTER&#8230;</h2>

<p>At the Tate St Ives, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-st-ives/barbara-hepworth-art-and-life" target="_blank">Barbara Hepworth: Art and Life</a> opens on 26 November. This will be a landmark retrospective on the iconic British artist Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975). Encompassing almost 50 sculptures, as well as rarely seen drawings, paintings and archival materials,<em>&nbsp;Barbara Hepworth: Art &amp; Life</em>&nbsp;will celebrate one of the most influential sculptors of the twentieth century and the special significance of St Ives on her work. Originally staged at The Hepworth Wakefield near the artist’s birthplace, Tate St Ives has collaborated with the gallery to reimagine the exhibition for the Cornish context in which Hepworth lived and worked.&nbsp;</p>
