Exciting news from Chef-grower Dan Cox, whose debut restaurant <a href="http://www.crocadon.farm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Crocadon</a>, located on his 120-acre regenerative farm in St Mellion, Cornwall opens on 3 Feb. He previously spent seven years working for the Simon Rogan Group before taking on the farm in 2017 with grand plans to create a self-sufficient and hyper-seasonal restaurant, supplied by its surrounding land. Just over five years later, and his vision is finally coming into fruition. Tasting menus are on offer, with a choice of two tasting menus &#8211; a long and shorter version &#8211; in the evenings, as well as a three-course Sunday lunch as a more relaxed sharing style offering.

If you&#8217;re a fan of Pizza Jockeys, who&#8217;ve been serving up their incredible sourdough pizzas at seasonal pop-ups at Fore Street Café in Newquay, you&#8217;ll be pleased to hear that Falmouth will be the first permanent base for the restaurant. Opening on 20 Jan on Market Strand (above), alongside weekly specials and old faves you&#8217;ll also be able to order Frozen Margaritas as well as various other local beers and soft-drinks.



All is not lost for Newquay though, as fans of Italian and Portuguese dining will be pleased to hear that <a href="https://www.verbena.restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Verbena</a>, by Adam Banks and Mariana Chaves is now open in The Cribbar Yard. Adam was previously head chef at Fifteen. Specialising in hyper local and seasonal produce, there are just 16 tables, open Friday, Saturday and Monday evenings plus lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.



Meanwhile, over the water in Flushing, Jeffrey Robinson, previously executive chef of The New Yard Restaurant and The Pantry (<a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/michelin-star-winners-2022-cornwall-south-west/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">one of Cornwall&#8217;s Green Star Michelin winners</a>) joins William Speed and Tamara Costin (below) who have bought the old Seven Stars pub which will be re-opening this year as a new hyper local and seasonal restaurant called harbourhouse. Tamara Costin created the original restaurant, bar and café, beachhouse, on the National Trust-protected South Milton Sands in the South Hams in Devon.

Up in Padstow, we were sad when the team behind Prawn on the Lawn <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/cornwall-openings-local-news/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">closed their other place, Barnaby&#8217;s, in 2022</a>, so we were pleased to hear it will be relaunching at the award-winning Trevibban Mill Vineyard just outside Padstow in May 2023, <a href="https://prawnonthelawn.com/restaurant/barnabys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">running as a summer pop-up</a>. Long time readers will remember this is the space once occupied by Appleton&#8217;s and then was <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/newsflash-jan-20/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supposed to be the Cornish site of The Ethicurian</a> before Covid got in the way. It&#8217;s a gorgeous space just outside Padstow looking out over the vines, so we&#8217;re looking forward to it.

MasterChef 2022 finalists Charlie Jeffreys, James Checkley and winner Nikita Pathakji will be cooking alongside Adam Handling Restaurant Group’s own Jamie Park (2017 finalist) for an unforgettable collaboration dinner at <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/adam-handling-ugly-butterfly-carbis-bay-restaurant-review/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ugly Butterfly</a> in Carbis Bay (below) on Sat 21 Jan and lunch on Sun 22 Jan.

The seven-course menu has been created to enable each chef to showcase a signature dish, using the very best of British ingredients to offer a totally unique dining experience. The menu will begin with Ugly Butterfly’s signature snacks before diners go on to enjoy dishes from each of the chefs, including two of Adam’s most iconic dishes ‘Mother’ and ‘Lobster, carrot, chilli’. Two of the country’s leading gastro guides have released their top 100 restaurants in recent days, and, naturally, there’s some local Muddy faves among them.



First up is the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.squaremeal.co.uk/restaurants/best/uk-top-100-restaurants_238" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SquareMeal 100</a>, a list that’s created from a compilation of diner votes and in-house restaurant critic opinion, with four Cornish restaurants making the top 100. Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 in Padstow was the Duchy&#8217;s highest place, at 10, followed by <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/argoe-newlyn-penzance-cornwall-review/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Argoe in Newlyn</a> (above) at 32, Coombeshead Farm in Lewannick at 52, and Outlaws New Road (below) in Port Isaac at 73.

Hardens was the other restaurant guide to release its favourites, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hardens.com/top-100-uk-restaurants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harden’s Top 100 Best UK Restaurants list 2023</a>. It put the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles in Perthshire as the UK’s top restaurant. A French-Scottish hybrid, its all about imaginative seasonal cooking and is definitely a special-night-out kind of place, just like the Cornish winners which included (sounding familiar?) Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 in Padstow at 29, Outlaws New Road (above) in Port Isaac at 44, and Outlaws Fish Kitchen just down the road in Port Isaac harbour at 63.



Frog by Adam Handling, sister restaurant to Ugly Butterfly also landed spot 66.



It&#8217;s also been a good week for Cornwall&#8217;s wine shops, with Padstow&#8217;s Bin Two taking the third spot, Indian Queens based Ellis Wharton Wines placed 36 and Truro&#8217;s Old Chapel Cellars 43 in <a href="https://harpers.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/31031/50_Best_Indies_2023:_The_full_rundown.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harpers Wine &amp; Spirit&#8217;s&nbsp;UK&#8217;s 50 Best Indie awards</a>, announced this week.

Continuing the wellness trend, <a href="https://saunasbythesea.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saunas by the Sea</a> have opened another location for their wood fired beachside saunas, with Harlyn (above) joining their existing location in Polzeath. Book for a single place for session, or the whole sauna, and enjoy the heat followed by a cold dip.



Bored of working from home? We hear new co-working space in St Ives, <a href="https://bayspace-stives.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BaySpace</a>, is worth checking out.



We also look forward to the UK’s first coastal lifestyle aparthotel. In a unique plan to redefine the shape of self-catering stays on the shoreline, Watergate Bay Hotel has acquired&nbsp;Sands&nbsp;Resort&nbsp;in Porth, North Cornwall, to create a new kind of self-catering holiday experience – to be operated by its Beach Retreats brand. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">And closings</h2>



It&#8217;s a sad goodbye to Cornish wellbeing charity, <a href="https://seasanctuary.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sea Sanctuary</a> who closed their doors in January.



We are also sad to say that the current iteration of <a href="https://fernpit.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fern Pit Café</a> and Ferry in Crantock, Newquay, will be seeing out their final season in 2023.
