<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-where">WHAT? WHERE?</h2>



<p><a href="https://porthpean.com/camp-cornwall/">Camp Cornwall</a> runs every year from their base in Porthpean. If you&#8217;re local, you may recognise the centre as it is operated by Cornwall Adventure Limited, so your child may well have stayed there on a school residential as they’ve been running youth-led residential trips since 2007.</p>

<p>Porthpean itself is a beautiful sheltered cove near St Austell between Charlestown and Mevagissey and the predominately slate coast line of cliffs and sandy beaches is littered with the remnants of Cornwall’s smuggling and piracy heritage alongside seals and all kinds of seabirds. The adventure centre is just above the beach; tree lined and with a sea view it is set up with activities including high ropes, archery, laser tag and all the facilities needed for a summer camp &#8211; think tents, cabins, lots of showers and a fire pit and stage. </p>



<p>Choose from two- or five-day residential summer camps, or the popular day camps which include lunch. Wrap around care is also on offer, so it is an excellent option for those needing regular or ad-hoc childcare, and for those whose kids enjoy outdoor activities. <a href="https://porthpean.com/camp-cornwall/">Camp Cornwall</a> is also a great option if you&#8217;re on holiday and are looking for a cost-effective introduction to get kids out and enjoying the Cornish coastline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>



<p>Camp Cornwall’s aim is to recreate the joy and wholesome fun of a traditional British youth camp but with added pizzazz of the latter-day US-style summer camp and modern activities that kids love. Kids are encouraged, safely, to expand their horizons and step out of their comfort zones. As they note, it is widely recognised that outdoor learning has multiple benefits. It develops self-esteem, supports mental health and wellbeing, promotes inclusive learning, and enhances peer to peer relationships.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-to-do">WHAT TO DO?</h2>



<p>Where to start with the activities on offer at Camp Cornwall, which are extensive? If you&#8217;re looking for summer holiday activities in Cornwall they have all of the options. We tried out kayaking, high ropes, archery and axe throwing on our Day Camp, but other activities over a week’s camp include monster SUP, surfing, climbing, laser tag and many more like fire lighting and first aid. Timetables are created daily taking into account the weather and tides, and although you need to bring old trainers and clothes you don&#8217;t mind getting a bit grubby, plus swimwear, they provide all the kit including wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets and so on.</p>



<p>I took along my chief testers for our day camp &#8211; one thought the kayaking was the highlight, the other the archery, and we all had a fab and action packed day. Yes, they let me have a go too, and I didn’t just sit back, I went right to the top of the high ropes and out on the water (check out our Instagram reel of our day here).</p>

<p>The instructors are encouraging, knowledgeable and they’re not going to get you to try anything that they’re not prepared to do, demonstrating patiently in an age-appropriate way. But &#8211; with gentle instruction they’ll also help you push your boundaries. Yes, even me! But particularly the kids — and there’s something for every level of fitness or ability. </p>

<p>Those staying for the two- and five-night camps stay in glamping-style accommodation which includes bunk beds under canvas. There is electricity and all mod-cons including flushing loos!</p>

<p>All meals are included, which for lunch is picnic-style catering with a choice of sandwiches. Overnight campers get home-cooked breakfasts and evening meals and there’s hydration stations for refilling water bottles across the site. </p>

<p>We didn’t just get out on the sea, our instructor Isaac was really knowledgeable &#8211; almost part tour guide. We saw seals and sea birds and he also found lots of sea creatures like jelly fish and crabs which he showed the kids — definitely a holistic approach to spending time on the water. All the instructors live locally and are really enthusiastic about the location and activities which adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Safety is taken seriously, as is safeguarding, so no worries on that front. </p>
