<p>It was fingers crossed for chef Andi Tuck representing Cornwall in the south-west week on the Great British Menu last week (above right).</p>



<p>I won&#8217;t spoil the surprise if you missed it, so catch up on the iPlayer to see Andi&#8217;s Cornish and smoke-cooked take on his dishes inspired by this year&#8217;s theme of animation and books (Ode to Paddington Bear&#8217;s 65 birthday), scoring some awesome scores from some amazing judges including Marcus Wareing and Michael O&#8217;Hare. </p>

<p>Speaking of the Great British Menu, keep an eye out for another local face&nbsp;from Tuesday!</p>



<p>Opening on 4 March, <a href="https://www.ondawadebridge.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Onda in Wadebridge</a> (below), an Italian inspired restaurant and wine bar from chef <a href="https://www.instagram.com/chefbenambridge87/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ben Ambridge</a>, a graduate of Fifteen Cornwall and owner/chef at The Foxes Revenge (they won Best Destination Pub in 2022’s Muddy Awards).</p>

<p>Head Chef Joseph Fallowfields has launched a new set tasting menu at <a href="https://www.houselbay.com/fallowfields" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fallowfields at Housel Bay Hotel</a> on the Lizard. By launching a set menu as the restaurant&#8217;s only offering the aim is reducing food waste and keeping the seasonality and quality of ingredients at the forefront of the dishes. Dishes in the opening menu for 2023 includes a monkfish carpaccio with last year’s tomatoes, Gouda tortellini with bacon and truffle oil, roasted cod with cucumber, apple and wasabi, and an aged beef fillet with suet shin pie and hen of the woods.</p>

<p>Down in Carlyon Bay, this summer look out for a second branch of The Mussel Shoal (the first inspired by the Alabama recording studio is in Porthleven and re-opens after the winter on 18 March).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Goodbyes</h2>



<p>As is always the way, among all the new openings come the goodbyes. In sad news for foodie fans, as I mentioned last month, Jeffrey Robinson, previously executive chef of The New Yard Restaurant and The Pantry (<a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/michelin-star-winners-2022-cornwall-south-west/">one of Cornwall’s Green Star Michelin winners</a>) is joining William Speed and Tamara Costin (below) who have bought the old Seven Stars pub which will be re-opening this year as a new hyper local and seasonal restaurant called harbourhouse. Sadly, this was then followed by the news that New Yard Restaurant, Pantry and provisions shop is to close for good.</p>



<p>Joining the list of goodbyes is long-time holiday-makers stalwart the Blue Tomato Café from the ferry-side location in Rock where it has been for the past two decades, and on to pastures new. (Fun fact, yours truly used to like the Port Isaac location that is now home to Nathan Outlaw&#8217;s New Road restaurant). The Rock location is fab, looking right across the estuary to Padstow, so we look forward to the new tenant. It&#8217;s also farewell to Relish deli in Wadebridge (the new occupant&#8217;s, Tim&#8217;s Place, open their doors this week) and down in St Ives, another one bites the dust, as The Allotment Deli is downing tools after 12 years. Meanwhile in Truro, Cup and Cocktail is also calling time at the bar.</p>

<p>My recent spa visit at Carbis Bay was one of the first with their new partnership with Bamford, and it was a delight. Bamford’s renown treatments, using their own products are now on offer to both hotel guests and those visiting the spa. The calming surroundings of Carbis Bay, overlooking the Estate’s blue flag beach, moments from the sand and surf, sets the stunning backdrop to the Bamford wellness space. Carbis Bay’s C Bay Spa is Bamford’s first Spa partner in Cornwall, and shares their passion for nature, sustainability, and well-being.</p>

<p>Speaking of spas, swimming and lidos, also in Carbis Bay, Una St Ives has unveiled the next exciting phase in its multi-million-pound development, with the launch of a year-round heated 20m&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unastives.co.uk/spa-leisure/una-lido/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lido&nbsp;swimming pool</a><strong> </strong>(heated to 25 degrees)&nbsp;and kid’s pool. Features include underwater lighting for twilight and night-time swims.&nbsp;This complements the existing indoor 15-metre swimming pool, children&#8217;s pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room, all accessible from the new outdoor facility. The open-air pool will be open year-round to resort guests, those using the Spa and existing Una St Ives leisure members, with selected availability for day guests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following the <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/fistral-beach-hotel-spa/"><strong>Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa</strong></a>’s win for their <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/superflashy-newsflash-march-2022-cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bay Bar “Best Bar List”</a> at the prestigious Trencherman’s Awards 2022, the hotel has now launched a newly revamped restaurant and bar. Featuring locally crafted interior fittings from Tom Raffield, Dick Pearce Bellyboards and more, the softer styling and colour palette reflects the more stylish and laid back food and drink offerings, including seasonal produce served on sharing boards, light lunches and snacks alongside the ‘storm in a teacup’ Afternoon Tea, plus award-winning cocktails.</p>

<p>Rick Stein&#8217;s back on the Beeb /iPlayer with season 3 of his eponymous <em>Cornwall </em>series, visiting foodie and other people of note up and down the Duchy. In episode 2 he meets <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/raynor-winn-author/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Raynor Winn</a> (who shared with us her fave places a while back) and later in the series he also meets <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/my-fave-places-patrick-gale-author-cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Patrick Gale</a> (who also did us the same honour). He also drops in on a Muddy-fave (and Muddy awards finalists) restaurant in Boscastle later in the series as well as a host of new and old names. Catch him at 6.30pm on BBC2.</p>

<p>The new spin off <em>Beyond Paradise </em>(also BBC, is there a theme?) might be set in Devon but the filming was done in Looe with cameos from Pentillie Castle and Port Eliot. In this Death in Paradise spin-off, Kris Marshall is back as DI Humphrey Marshall and along with his fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) relocates to Looe, aka the fictional town of Shipton Abbott in Devon. Watch the first episode this Friday (24 Feb) on BBC1.</p>
