<p>Love a bargain? Of course you do. March brings one of the best excuses for a day out, with discounted entry to Cornwall attractions and some that won’t cost a penny.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/open-week" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Lottery Open Week</a> on 7–15 March sees museums, historic houses and attractions across the Duchy opening their doors for free or offering special deals to anyone with a National Lottery ticket.</p>



<p>From historic houses and mines to estate manors, here are some of the best places to head for locally.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-english-heritage-pendennis-castle">English Heritage – <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/pendennis-castle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pendennis Castle</a></h2>

<p>One of only a few artillery forts to be circular for 360 degrees defence – Pendennis is on the other bank of the Carrick Roads, an important dock in the River Fal estuary, and (alongside St Mawes above) defended the enormous natural harbour from enemies invading England. Today you can explore its history through displays and exhibitions and they also host events for children during most school holidays to bring the history to life.</p>

One Lottery game allows access for one adult and two children, but please book a separate ticket for each visitor.</em></p>

<p>One of Cornwall’s lesser known but still lovely National Trust properties <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/trerice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trerice</a>  is an Elizabethan manor house with fine interiors and a beautiful walled garden, with free entry from 7–14 March 2026.</p>

<p>There’s lots to be inspired by at Cotehele, with 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards, but it is the terraced garden above, which borders the tudor house to the east, looking over to the viaduct towards Calstock, that we liked the most. The terraced herbaceous borders are planted with a seasonal mix of hydrangeas, roses, geraniums, irises, salvia, <em>Centaurea Monatana and Centaurea Montana Alba </em>and <em>Veronicastrum</em> – they are just coming into their summer bloom and the foxgloves are looking particularly fine. Later in the summer look out for the cut flower garden, where the team grow the blooms for the 60ft-long flower garland usually on display in the Great Hall at Christmas. Free entry from 7–14 March 2026.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-national-trust-lanhydrock-bodmin">National Trust – <strong><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lanhydrock/features/signs-of-spring-in-lanhydrocks-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lanhydrock</a> (Bodmin)</strong></h2>

<p>Tired of National Trust properties yet? No, us neither. Victorian house and estate at Lanhydrock, near to Bodmin, with absolutely beautiful woodlands to walk and cycle in. Unlike a lot of Cornwall’s gardens, it is nowhere near the coast which gives it a totally different feel, where the woodland floor is carpeted first with snowdrops then bluebells later in the year. Free entry 7–14 March 2026.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-national-trust-levant-mine-and-beam-engine">National Trust – Levant Mine and Beam Engine</h2>



<p>Dramatic clifftop World Heritage site where you can see the mighty 1840s steam beam engine in steam and explore the rugged ruins of one of Cornwall’s most iconic mines, with free entry 8–12 March 2026.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-national-trust-trengwainton-garden-nr-penzance">National Trust – Trengwainton Garden, Nr Penzance</h2>



<p>Sheltered, beautifully planted National Trust garden of winding paths, award‑winning magnolias and rhododendrons with wide lawns, water features and sea views over Mount’s Bay, with free entry from 8–12 March 2026.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-national-trust-glendurgan-mawnan-smith-falmouth">National Trust – <strong><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/glendurgan-garden/features/when-the-garden-re-opens" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glendurgan</a> (Mawnan Smith, Falmouth)</strong></h2>



<p>Sub-tropical valley garden and horticultural hotspot: expect primroses and violets under the trees, interspersed shortly after by a mixture of jewel-coloured aquilegias and wild orchids and then bluebells galore. The camellias and magnolias are particularly spectacular as you wind your way down the valley to the beach on the edge of the Helford River. Free entry from 10–14 March 2026.</p>



<p><em>One National Lottery ticket will entitle one player (who must be an adult) and up to 4 children free admission at participating NT properties, excluding Mother&#8217;s Day, Sunday 15 March.</em></p>
