<p><a href="https://www.trurocathedral.org.uk/luxmuralis-space">Space by Luxmuralis</a> is at Truro Cathedral for one week, from 13 &#8211; 17 January and takes place in the evenings. Space is an immersive visual and audio spectacular experience allowing viewers to go on a journey through space and time. Walk amongst the stars against the incredible backdrop of the architecture of Truro Cathedral.  </p>

<p>Having taken some time off from the road after her marathon three-month autumn UK and USA tour, singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid is kicking off 2025 with a short run of UK shows — starting in her adopted home town of Penzance, Cornwall — before heading across the channel for a five-week February-March tour in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany (Fri 17 Jan, <a href="https://theacornpenzance.com/">The Acorn</a>).</p>

<p>Head to <a href="https://www.hallforcornwall.co.uk/whats-on/">Hall for Cornwall</a> for two live ballet shows &#8211; Swan Lake (20 Jan) and the Nutcracker (21 &#8211; 22 Jan). Also Rob Beckett will be live in Giraffe (23 Jan) and Hairspray is on stage from 13 Jan.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.silentdiscoyoga.co.uk/silent-disco-yoga-truro-cathedral/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Silent Disco Yoga &amp; Meditation</a></strong> at Truro Cathedral YOGA session is simply, an unmissable experience. On <strong>18 Jan</strong>, join fellow yogis and practice Vinyasa flow yoga in this awe inspiring location. The lights will be low, the walls drenched in up lighting and, as always, there will be a carefully curated, uplifting playlist befitting of such a venue. Finish your evening with Stretch leading you through a sublime 45 minute YOGA NIDRA guided meditation. Binaural Beats are played into the headphones to help heighten this deeply relaxing and restorative experience. A must attend experience in its own right or as part of the double event!</p>



<p><strong><a href="https://www.endurancelife.com/north-cornwall" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polzeath Marathon</a>, 11 Jan</strong>, starts on the beach at Polzeath and includes not just a marathon, but a 10K race, a half-marathon and an ultra-marathon too. Down in Cambourne the week after is the 10 mile road race, <strong><a href="https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?elid=Y&amp;event_id=12278" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stormforce 10</a>, 21 Jan</strong></p>

<p><strong>LAST CHANCE!</strong></p>



<p>Not long left if you want to see multiple Rothko’s in Cornwall – they’ll be in situ until early Jan 2025 – five of <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-st-ives/display/mark-rothko-the-seagram-murals">Mark Rothko’s Seagram murals</a> are being shown together at the Tate St Ives and you’ll find them as you exit the exhibition in a low contemplative light in gallery 10. The Seagram murals were donated by Rothko the Tate in 1969 after being completed by the artist in his studio in New York in 1958, where they were initially painted as a commission for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building. Despite completing the work – and a second and then third version- to the space specification of the commission, after a visit to Europe and Cornwall in 1959 Rothko decided that the restaurant was not the right place for the installation and it was never completed. The works move away from his original brighter colours and are instead more red and black, inspired by visits to Florence. </p>



<p><a href="https://kurtjackson.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c9e137ec6e6778496b71bb0dc&amp;id=9cd5dbbb02&amp;e=86d85164f2">Flora: 150 Years of Environmental Change in Cornwall</a>&nbsp;sees Kurt Jackson working in collaboration with Penlee House Gallery &amp; Museum to stage an exhibition about the flora of West Cornwall (until January 11th 2025). This thought-provoking show sees Kurt’s work juxtaposed with Victorian depictions of Cornwall to demonstrate the impact of 150 years of environmental change on the region’s flora, fauna, habitats and human experience.&nbsp;<a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/arts-culture/kurt-jackson-flora-150-years-penlee-house-penzance-cornwall/">Read my review here</a>.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s also your lance chance to discover the vibrant textile works of Romani artist <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-st-ives/magorzata-mirga-tas">Małgorzata Mirga-Tas</a> at Tate St Ives (until 5 Jan). <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/magorzata-mirga-tas-31245">Małgorzata Mirga-Tas</a> is a Romani visual artist, educator and activist. Born in 1978, she lives and works in Czarna Góra, a village at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland.</p>



<p>Mirga-Tas is known for her textile collages created with materials and fabrics that are mainly gathered from family and friends. Her visual storytelling comes from a feminist perspective and challenges stereotypical representations of Roma people. Often working in collaboration with other women, she sews pieces of clothing, handkerchiefs, tablecloths, curtains and sheets together to create vivid portraits and scenes from everyday life. <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/arts-culture-things-to-do/first-look-malgorzata-mirga-tas-tate-st-ives/">Read my review here</a>.</p>



<p>TEYR gallery in Bude is a new, pop-up gallery by three local female artists, until 11 January only.</p>

<p>Cornwall’s biggest outdoor ice-rink is once again in the grounds of the <a href="https://www.edenproject.com/visit/whats-here/ice-skating" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eden Project</a>, until Feb 2025, with plenty of space to practice your axels and spins. The cafe is serving up hot drinks and sweet treats. Pre-booking online is essential, and you’ll need a locals pass or to pay to access Eden itself too.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s your last chance to head down to Mousehole (above) to see the most famous of the Cornish harbour lights as the lights finish on <strong>5 Jan</strong>. The current lights were started by Mousehole-based artist, Joan Gillchrest, 60 years ago in 1963!</p>



<p>It&#8217;s also the last chance to see the <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cotehele/features/christmas-at-cotehele" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cotehele Garland</a>, on display until <strong>5 Jan</strong>. The garland is a beloved Christmas tradition, which began in the 1950s. The first garland was a beautiful and simple affair, made from a bushy evergreen shrub called pittosporum, inspired by the decorative greenery and kissing boughs that the Tudors brought into their homes in the winter.</p>

<p>Find out all about Cornwall’s tin mining past in the new Tolgus Mill interactive exhibition at <a href="https://www.cornwall-gold.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornwall Gold</a>, Redruth, and then try panning for gold yourself. Little ones will enjoy the dress-up section to become a Tin Miller or a Bal Maiden, and be fascinated as the Tolgus Tin Streaming Mill smashes rock into tiny pieces, removing the tin ore from the stone, and then employs a host of inventions to separate the valuable tin.</p>



<p>For a longer visit, explore the jewellery showroom, try the café and choose from optional paid for activities including build your own bear at Bearworks, Pick a Pearl (and have it set to wear) plus Paint and Create a pottery masterpiece.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature">NATURE</h2>



<p>Wassails are traditional ceremonies held to awaken the cider apple trees to ensure a fruitful harvest in the autumn and happen across Cornwall in January. Includes <strong><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cornwall/pentire/events/2fd56ddb-ef8e-42cf-98c6-0977884c7571">Pentire Orchard</a>, </strong>Nr Polzeath, <strong>5 Jan</strong> and the 401st <strong><a href="https://www.facebook.com/BodminWassail" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bodmin Wassail</a></strong> on <strong>6 Jan</strong>.</p>



<p>Once you have taken your real Christmas tree down and stored your decorations away to re-use again, why not put your tree to some good use – donate them to Beach Guardian&#8217;s tree amnesty, or go one better and help the <a href="https://fb.me/e/4ezWx5MGc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beach Guardian team use the trees</a> to create ‘fences’ across the dunes at Constantine Bay in North Cornwall, as the marram grass has been reduced due to erosion, this year on <strong>26 Jan</strong>. </p>

<p><a href="http://padstowkitchengarden.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Padstow Kitchen Garden</a> is hosting a winter farm feast lunch in the polytunnel on <strong>26 Jan</strong>. Ex-Stein’s chef turned veg grower Ross Geach will be firing up his Big Green Eggs and OFYR Fire Pit and creating a delicious four-course menu using produce from the farm. Expect winter greens, cauliflower, beautiful crown prince squash, preserved root veg from the bountiful summer crop and pork from Trerethern Farms’ home-reared drift of Cornish Black pigs. £45pp, BYO.</p>



<p>Over at The Idle Rocks, their <a href="https://fb.me/e/4hwtqZmSE">January supper club</a> (<strong>23 Jan</strong>) is a celebration of old &amp; new, with Keith Ives, a previous Head Chef of The Idle Rocks from 1986 – 1989 joining current Head Chef Carla Jones. Keith’s culinary journey is long and varied, spanning 4 decades! He started working in restaurants in 1975, at the Savoy Hotel Group in London, working in Claridges and The Savoy Grill. Head Chef Carla Jones &amp; her kitchen team have collaborated with Keith to create the menu, which will be served at this extra special Supper Club.</p>
