Surfing beach at Polzeath stay at The Point

WHAT? WHERE?

On North Cornwall’s famed Atlantic coast the so-called ‘golden triangle’ of Polzeath, Rock, and Padstow’s reputation is fully justified, beloved by holiday makers and locals alike.

Overlooking it all, The Point at Polzeath. We were staying for a short autumnal fitness break in one of The Point’s seven eco-apartments with sweeping golf course and coastal views over the fields towards Polzeath. These modern apartments are named after areas from the shipping forecast. Sole, Viking or Lundy sleep up to four and Fitzroy, where we were staying, sleeps up to six. The Point Holidays also look after a selection of other holiday accommodation in Polzeath village and surrounds, all within walking distance of the health complex at The Point.

THE VIBE

The eco-apartments blend into the landscape at The Point, where as you sit on the balcony terrace and look out towards the sea you forget you’re just a moments walk from the vibrant health club at the centre of the complex. Polzeath is famed for beautiful sunsets and the glorious sandy surf beach, and the view from the apartments looks straight out at it over the golf course. The Point itself is really popular with locals and visitors so there is a gentle buzz of people arriving for the Padel courts, golf course, gym and the bar and restaurant; think convivial but not overwhelming.

PILLOW TALK

In the eco-apartments, bedrooms are downstairs to give the views and light to the living space upstairs. No basement vibes though, not for a moment; each room has a door that leads out into the shared garden, with a private terrace immediately outside. Rooms are spacious and each can be configured as a twin if required giving maximum flexibility.

Sheets and crisp, towels white and fluffy, you know the drill; toiletries like body wash are own brand in eco-friendly containers. One bedroom is en suite, the other two share a generous hall bathroom with bath and walk in shower. A further toilet can be found upstairs. Artwork on the walls is a mix of local photography and artists work, and decor, while on the minimalist side is stylish not cliched. There is plenty of cupboard – and floor – space for cases.

SCOFF & QUAFF

Upstairs the living space is divided into sections, with one smaller reading room portioned off via glass doors, leaving the rest of the room open. Sliding doors open out onto private balconies. The kitchen and eating area had far more personality than I expected, using reclaimed vintage furniture to compelling effect with colours to fit the location without screaming “coastal”.

Expect a basic welcome pack for tea and coffee, but pack your own milk and breakfast items. It may feel remote but Polzeath is actually very close to Wadebridge where you’ll find the nearest big shops, plus, there are also lovely local shops and farm shops nearby. In Polzeath there’s a Spar, and we also like Restharrow Farm Shop (they supply Outlaws among others), local café and supplies shop Fee’s Food (and a new branch of Phillip Warren butchers) in Rock, plus Trevathan Farm Shop at St Endellion. Supermarket deliveries are also totally possible here if you book in advance (aside from Ocado, who don’t deliver in Cornwall).

On site is the Bear Bar and restaurant at The Point. Upstairs floor to ceiling windows look out over the golf course towards the sea, and downstairs the Bear Bar is cosy with a country club vibe. Expect bar snacks and chefs specials, featuring local produce from Phillip Warren and global-inspired dishes. On Sundays, they serve roasts, with a swim and dine offer too for locals.

SPA & FITNESS

Guests and homeowners at The Point Holidays can enjoy perks on the facilities at The Point and become part of The Point community. With a gym, heated indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi, golf course and option to add classes, tennis and padel tennis, there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied.

As an added bonus, no need to drive or park once you’ve arrived as even if you don’t stay in the eco-apartments, every property managed by The Point Holidays is within walking distance of The Point and also the beach and SW coast path.

OUT & ABOUT

It is a short walk down through the valley to the wide, sandy, lifeguarded beach at Polzeath. Hire surfboards, go body boarding, take a surf lesson, sign up for yoga at the beach, or book a sauna session. You’ll also find more restaurants in Polzeath including the vibe-y Rum Bar at Surf Side, and it’s not far up to Port Isaac to Nathan Outlaw’s two eateries, one of which has a Michelin star, plus several coastal cosy pubs.

Over in Rock there’s sailing and water skiing, SUP hire and miles of sand which is dog-friendly, and a couple of restaurants including Four Boys. Take the ferry – or water taxi – over to Padstow, with shops and galleries around the little working harbour, and restaurants ranging from Sabzi for lunch salads, the bothy for coffees and cake with an estuary view, Prawn on the Lawn for banging casual dining, right the way up to fancy options at Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and Michelin starred No 6 by Paul Ainsworth. Book boat trips to see wildlife with Wavehunters, or Padstow Sealife Safaris.

The south west coast path is glorious here, with walks round ‘The Rumps’ and out to Pentire Point regularly cited as a favourite stretch. The walk from Polzeath round to Rock is also beautiful, and worth the diversion inland to visit St Enodoc church (where Poet Laureate John Betjeman is buried).

KID FRIENDLY

Yes, many of the properties are super kid friendly. The eco-apartments are not overtly child friendly, with none designated for kids with bunk beds or similar, but can be configured as twins. The whole area is great for families. On site, children are welcome in the pool – aside from a couple of hours each day designated as adult only – and on the padel courts and golf course. Polzeath, Rock and Daymer are brilliant for kids, with lots to do.

DOG-FRIENDLY

We stayed in a pet-free apartment, but over the whole portfolio there is a mix of pet-friendly and pet free accommodation.

WHAT ELSE?

Included in our stay was a complimentary fitness class, as well as use of the health club and gym, with pool and sauna/ steam / hot tub. Discounts for golf and Padel are available. Use of The Health Club is included for guests staying for any property within the Roserrow/The Point grounds. Look for Health Club included when booking online.

ACCESSIBILITY

Apartments at The Point are not really suitable for guests with disabilities as even the single level accommodation has a ‘step in’ or decking steps to the property. However, there are single level homes to offer in the wider collection and it is best to call and speak to a member of the team who will be able to help.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: The active break was a welcome escape, and included as much or as little activity as wanted. From golf to tennis, swimming to surfing, there was plenty to keep us moving – and relaxing. Also great for a family beach holiday, or an inter-generational break.

Not for: This is rural and coastal, and pretty quiet and dark in the evenings, so not an all singing and dancing entertainment-filled resort.

The damage: 2-bedroom apartment from £220 per night for a minimum of two nights, a 3-bedroom from £330 per night for a minimum of two nights.

GETTING THERE

Around a 15 minute drive beyond Wadebridge and the A39. The nearest railway station is Bodmin Parkway. EV chargers are accessed via the cabin site for cabin guests and owners.
