Well, what isn&#8217;t opening or re-opening this April in Cornwall I hear you ask? The Duchy re-awakens after it&#8217;s usual winter slumber &#8211; but among the old favourites re-opening their doors are some exciting new announcements.

After New Yard restaurant closed last year, we are thrilled that Tim Spedding and Louise Rødkjær are the new custodians of the walled garden, café, pantry and, late this year, the restaurant at Trelowarren. First up is the café, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/flora_newyard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flora</a>, open Thursday to Sunday, 9-3pm serving breakfasts, lunches and coffee, with pizzas to follow in May, with the restaurant slated to arrive later in the year.



Meanwhile back in their old stomping ground of Rock, new to the scene is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fourboys.cafe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Four Boys Café</a> &#8211; so new in fact that it is not even four weeks since they got the keys to the premises. In what used to be the Blue Tomato Café by the ferry across the Camel Estuary from Rock to Padstow, from the team behind Fees, Four Boys is a licensed all-day café under the care of local lad and head chef Matt Wadsworth. On the menu is locally caught seafood and seasonal produce including salads and veggies grown in Rock. Walk-ins only, dog friendly.



It&#8217;s also hello to Lanteague Studios on the coast near Holywell Bay just outside Newquay, where a community of small business studios is opening this month. Among the names will be <a href="https://www.instagram.com/agweres/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Agweres</a>, a new foodie / wine foray from Muddy fave Wild Wine School, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gorse_cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gorse</a> (Independent sourdough bakery ope Tues-Sat mornings only) and less foodie but still fab, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/payntcornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paynt Art Room</a>.

Other new openings to look out for include <a href="https://www.instagram.com/forestreetdeli/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fore Street Deli</a> in St Ives (and new coffee place <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thegarden_stia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Garden</a> at St Ia Church Café) as well as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mamm.cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mamm</a> Market Garden &amp; Café at Crocadon Farm, Saltash. Speaking of the south coast, Shoreside at Carlyon Bay (above) opened last week with Mussel Shoal&nbsp;making its first foray out of Porthleven and joining Manor Made café to add to the delicious mix of local, independent foodies transforming the beach into a feast of flavours.

In other foodie news, its congrats again to <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/adam-handling-ugly-butterfly-carbis-bay-cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adam Handling</a> (above) who finished off his week in which he maintained his Michelin star as he started by being crowned Great British Menu&nbsp;Champion of Champions 2023. His Carbis Bay restaurant Ugly Butterfly is hosting a charity lunch next week and he&#8217;s also taking to the stage at the Porthleven Food Festival (21-23 April) &#8212; want to catch his demo? The <a href="https://driftwoodspars.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Driftwood Spars</a> in St Agnes, shortlisted in the National Pub and Bar Awards 2023, has a newly launched pale ale, Sea Shanty, and, keeping to the drinks theme, Colwith Farm Distillery and the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery have collaborated on a new limited edition ‘Crowning Royale’ cocktail (pictured) – in celebration of the King’s Coronation, using Myrtle, grown at the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, infused in Colwith’s Aval Dor Original Cornish Gin.



Among the re-openings is The Harbour Inn, in Porthleven (below)- the St Austell Brewery restaurant with rooms that has had undergone a significant refurb over the winter, and following suit in May, The Rising Sun in St Mawes.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">GET OUTSIDE</h2>



Here&#8217;s one for parents &#8211; The Eden Project have announced that they are opening one of the biggest outdoor play areas in the South West. Named Natures&#8217; Playground, it will feature slides, swing sets, water play, suspended nets and even a miniature clay quarry and at the centre the Tree of Life tower that will stand at nine metres tall. Children will scramble, crawl and climb their way through and over the tree to the viewing nest at the very top, before shooting down the corkscrew tube slide.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ARTS AND CULTURE</h2>



The <a href="https://cornwall.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/great-gardens-of-cornwall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Gardens of Cornwall</a>, a collection of&nbsp;the&nbsp;best-known, largest, most historically and horticulturally important&nbsp;gardens&nbsp;in Cornwall, is collaborating with local artists in a bid to raise money for the Cornwall Community Foundation.

Nine artists will base themselves at a garden each to draw inspiration and create a visual representation of what spring means to them. The exclusive collection of work will be exhibited for one week at Lemon Street Market, before being auctioned on 20 June. The local artists include Lizzie Black, Andrew Tozer, Rob Rimmington, Nicky Walker, Mary Jago, Kate Cambridge, Lorna Tremayne, Susan Nathan and Carol O’Toole. Each artist will draw from their unique styles, using various formats to recreate the individual vistas. 



Over in Penzance, online art specialists, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/trozecontemporaryart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Troze Contemporary Art,</a> has found a new permanent home in Arcade Steps. We look forward to the first exhibition. 



A powerful debut exhibition from Cornish artist Natalie Day has been unveiled this month at the Royal Cornwall Museum, showcasing a series of paintings about the land, made of the land and exploring themes of connection.

<a href="https://www.royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">This Land&nbsp;</a>tells the story of the artist&#8217;s journey and return to Cornwall, exploring the idea of reconnecting with the land and coming full circle.&nbsp;Natalie’s work, unveiled as Earth Day approaches later in April, explores the use of natural pigments and paints made from the Earth – truly bringing the roots of Cornwall itself into the work she produces.



The exhibition – which has found a perfect setting in the museum’s Philbrick Room, surrounded by the extensive geology collection from the Royal Institute of Cornwall – opened to the public on 4 April and runs until 24 June 2023.

And last but not least, in comedy news, Kiri Pritchard McLean (above) has been announced as opening The Falmouth Cringe comedy festival on Thursday 6th July 2023, known for her appearances on Have I Got News For You and Live at the Apollo.
